Happenstance
As its in its final season, is getting pretty close to its finale and was mentioned in the Man of Steel thread I figured Smallville could use its own thread. Oh and im sure Shorty will mention/threaten this but use spoiler tags. Did anyone see the latest episode then? I thought the guy they got in to play Booster Gold did a great job, made me laugh quite a bit. Blue Beetle unfortunately looked more like a reject from the Beetleborgs but I can live with it. Always some nice moments in the Geoff Johns written episodes. Also some of the latest trailers for the finale have been awesome.
Daft
I've only just seen ep17. Been enjoyable. I fucking loved the whole Superboy Conner Kent thing. Shame they spent so long building to that episode and then they ship him off to Washington. Makes me wish Smallville could tank the first 5 seasons and speed it along to around this point earlier. It's ending just as we are getting to the awesome stuff.
Rummy
I bought the box set of 1-9 at xmas, but I'm still trundling through, only just started season 3 recently! So I will be avoiding this thread due to potential spoiler nature, but I wanted to post to say how excellent I find Smallville to be(I've seen beyond Season 3, but it's always bitty). In fact, whilst at work on friday night I spent like 3 hours shredding paper and watching Smallville, proper nursing!
Jon
Smallville get very unfairly treated by the majoirty of comic book fans. Yeah, it's been frustrating at times but it's a show that's managed to survive on network television for 10 years and it's about all things superhero related, in my view that should be a plus for any fan of anything to do with superheroes. The Superman film series would probably still have been in development hell if it hadn't been for Smallville being on the air, keeping the interest up. The acting isn't ever going to win any Emmy's but it's no Cape either. Considering the budget they have to work on, the FX has been brilliant over the years, certainly nothing better on show on TV. Had me going for quite a few episodes that he was going to grow into Michael Rosenbaum by the end of the season. That actor who played him did a really good job as well, I thought he was brilliant as Lex in the episode where he shot at Ma Kent. Smallville unfortunately is just one of those shows where if people dont like it, instead of just not watching it they'll go on and on moaning about it. When it first began I did complain from time to time when things werent right with the Superman mythos but the more they changed the more obvious it was that it was its own story and nothing had to sync up with Superman. I would love to see it continued once season 10 finishes in a comic and actually become one of the 52 Earths in the DC multiverse. When is this starting on E4? Still no date has been set

Yeah, I was think that too and then when he said he went by Conner I was like FUCK YEAH!!! And then he pulled out the Superboy shirt at the end. Like I said, I wish they hadn't sent him away. I guess they sold the farm so he couldn't just hang around but, still lameness. Also, I think this might be my favourite comic book cover ever. Is the comic actually any good? I was thinking that for rebooting a Superman film they should do a Batman, send Clark away and have Conner be Superman. I think his whole half Lex/half Superman identity he has gives him a dimension Clark really lacks and needs. Would been we'd get a new origin story that hadn't been done a million times, too. Shorty
Yeah just to reinforce, I'm really against spoilers, especially on a show I've been watching for the last 9 years! (When it first appeared on Channel 4, it was a year behind the US and I have since bridged the gap). Please continue to use tags The show has had more weak moments than strong, but I still have really fond memories of it and love many things about it. Saved up the last three episodes to watch all at once and really glad I did. Especially loved the latest episode, with a certain couple of characters being handled, I think, exceptionally well Booster Gold, complete with a decent costume, sponsorship badges and a well spoken Skeets - very well brought to life. Also Clark's complaints about his glasses, and Lois telling him to slouch more and be less... like himself. Pure Superman origin stuff right there Will be saving up the next two and the 2 hour (or 1hr45 without breaks) finale to watch in three weeks time! I wonder if Tom Welling's Superman will appear in the new Wonder Woman series at all. Since CW will still own the Returns suit - and the Man of Steel movie probably won't be using it. Yeah the comic is pretty good, some very nice art. Is does get a bit out there at times though with stuff from the future and aliens. My favourite Conner Superboy story is this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Superboy-Boy-Steel-Geoff-Johns/dp/1848567790/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1303641485&sr=1-1 Which is all about him coming to terms with both his Superman and Luthor sides. I just wish they would hurry up and release it paperback so I could buy it! Edited April 24, 2011 by Happenstance
Jon
Slightly off tangent, but has anyone seen the Aquaman pilot that was done after the success of the Season 5 episode of Smallville, Aqua? It's got Justin Hartley (who plays Green Arrow on Smallville) playing Aquaman, . It's also got Adrianne Palicki who is about to play Wonder Woman. I thought it was pretty good, but obviously it didn't get picked up.

Im glad they liked Justin Hartley enough though to give him Green Arrow in Smallville, I think thats been a great character. Its a shame he isnt as good as his original stint back in season 6 but his speech in the Homecoming episode this season was awesome.
Shorty
Yeah I saw that, shame it didn't get off the ground. Also had Ving Rhames in iirc. Hartley made a pretty good GA so it worked out ok
LegoMan1031
Smallville is ace, i have always loved it! And watched Ep 18 yesterday. Did me laugh Clark really trying to be all bumbling and stuff, he seemed to pull it off really well! Oh i watched this teaser trailer for the season 10 finale and it got me very excited. BE WARNED it does spoil something for the finale so don't watch if you don't want to know! Edited April 24, 2011 by Mike1988uk Was shouted at by Shorty! ;) haha
Shorty
Cmaaan, not even hints it doesn't take much effort to figure out who you're talking about there. Regarding this, though: Did me laugh Clark really trying to be all bumbling and stuff, he seemed to pull it off really well! Yes. Definitely. I thought he did really well, especially when talking to Kord.

Happenstance
My only problem with all that is that ive never really been a big fan of silver age, bumbling Clark Kent. Its probably why I liked Dean Cain's Clark so much. He wasnt bumbling to the point of annoying but managed to keep Clark low key enough that it did feel like he and Superman were different people

And so us the viewers just need to accept it that people do not put two and two together. I think for me its something ive always just accepted as part of the story of Superman. Its the fact that ive always thought of Superman as the costume and Clark as the real person. It always made sense. He grew up on Earth and just because you have alien DNA wouldnt change the fact that you were brought up with our values etc. Plus weve just watched this character for 10 seasons grow and change etc, it kind of feels like its tarnishing the character in favour of the hero (something which thankfully they have spoken about on the show, I just dont agree with their reasoning)

Smallville dug itself into a hole a little bit with stuff like that. There was an episode early on when he got his super hearing i think where he was blind, i thought from that it would have been perfect for him to start wearing glasses as it could have been put in the story that his eyes were effected etc But then i thought to myself why would he have thought he needed to wear glasses at that stage. But then like the start of Superman Returns it shows Clark wearing glasses as a kid... why did he need to wear glasses since he is like super n all!? I've never been a DC fan, or even much of a Superman fan. I think I ended up liking Smallville cos it got rid of the ridiculous invincibility of Superman, and went very much for the Spider-Manish teenager-just-trying-to-live-his-life-whilst-also-being-a-super-powered-being sort of vibe. Shorty
One thing that has really bothered me about Smallville for the last 2-3 years has been the sets. That same damn street, that same damn back alley. Years ago when they had 7mil viewers an episode and a big budget straight from WB, they used to film on location in Vancouver and that Metropolis looked fantastic. These days it's all the same painfully obvious sets, constantly returning to places for no reason just because they couldn't budget in another location for the scene. They also have very few extras and very little natural light/outdoor scenes or set pieces. Occasionally this mold is broken, like that episode recently where Clark lost his powers to Blue K out at that village of sacrificial crazies. Or that great scene at the beginning of the season, out in the fields of the farm. However, it doesn't change the fact that every time they end up on that same street corner, I roll my eyes and the illusion is broken again. I guess part of me hoped they had scrimped and saved for the last half-dozen episodes - and that they would look really good. Perhaps I will keep hold of that hope for the finale
Happenstance
Yeah that can pull you out of scenes when you notice things like that. Thankfully I think a while ago I just accepted that as a problem of tv shows where the budget is spent elsewhere and I dont really think about it anymore. I really cant wait for the finale though. They need to pull out all the stops for it. One thing Smallville did used to do well was epic season finales, better than most other shows I watch. The past few havent been the best theyve done but I really hope the last ever episode brings everything it can and maybe even shows the people making the new movie what it could be.
