Night Shifts

Recommended Posts

Oh no, not another thread from Scoop!

Right, so I have to start doing these from tonight and, in a rare window into my existence off of here, invite you all to discuss with me the horrors that are night shifts.

- What can I expect them to do to my happiness?

- Will my social life suffer?

- Will I become a vampire?

All questions I need answers to. Please.

I used to work nights for a summer when I was at uni in a lock factory. It would have been pretty awful but I did it with 3 of my best mates so we made the best of it.

It's pretty horrible, I was constantly tired as it's so hard to get any sleep during the day, it totally messed with me from that point of view, I guess it could depend on exactly what work you're doing though... In answer to your questions:

1. If you don't like the job it will quite mess with your happiness

2. Without a doubt

3. There's a high possibility, this is the one upside imo

It depends on if he becomes a whiny, non-threatening "modern" vampire or a proper classic one.

Depends if you like the job, it could go the way will wrote. Or something different. You may not get to sleep during the day, thus be miserable at night because of sans sleep.

Will my social life suffer?

If you like to go out and socialize in the evenings, then yes. It will affect your social life. Because (if you are on a 4 on, 4 off rota for example) your days off could be different to that of friends days off.

What are your shift patterns anyway??.

Will I become a vampire?

There is a chance, but it is a slim one to be honest.

My opinion of night shifts. The pay is excellent, but it isn't compensation to what it can do to you physically and mentally. You'll probably have no time to do anything outside of working days, then the first day off as such from work will be bad. Unless you stay up all day instead of sleeping, then sleep at night. Leaves you 3 nights of social, or 4 if you decide to nap.

If and when you decide to leave work, it will take time to get back into a routine of "normality".

I've worked nights for 4 years now, but thankfully I'm only part time, any more would physically kill me.

The sleep thing is hard to adjust to, it's not so hard now because its colder and darker. In the summer its a right arse to sleep because of the light and heat.

As for socialising, it shouldn't affect it if you're adaptable. I work thurs and friday nights, I grab a few hours kip saturday and I'm usually out at football or down the local in the evening for a few hours. Admittedly some days I am dead to the world.

Shift pattern is usually three days off a week on nights, but they are sometimes sandwiched. So having one day off between two nights is fairly useless. I do get a nice weekend off at the end of the month, but that's really far away. Whine!

The job itself isn't nightmarish. I'm working on GM support for LEGO Universe, so I basically have to play the game and sort out any issues consumers (mostly kids) are having via chat or email tickets. Everyone in the team is awesome, so that's a huge bonus.

Thanks for your responses, guys. They help, even if they have confirmed my growing concerns with this job obliterating my life outside work.

on the plus side, you can save a fortune working the late shift at the expense of not being able to party all the time.

There is that, but at the same time I feel I've missed out on the best friday nights of my life from 18-22. ;_;

You find a way to make the social life work Scoop, my ex worked 70 hour weeks and still managed to find the time, sure it was a pain and difficult, but if you get into a routine it'll work.

I commend the people working in the Surbiton 24-hour McDonalds. Their work is so appreciated.

Muchos respect for anyone working in the 24 hour service industry. It is because of them I can travel to Tesco at 3am and buy delicious snacks.
