Analysis from NPD's Anita Frazier:

"The video game industry experienced its biggest sales month ever, besting last December by 4%. It wasn't enough, though, to compensate for the sales decline throughout the year, and so full-year sales came in 8% below last year's record-setting revenues."

"The only category to see an increase over last year was portable hardware, which was up due to a 7% increase in the average retail price. The DS platform, across all categories, contributed 17% of total industry dollars in 2009, up three points from 2008."

"Unit sales were down only 6% from last year. Average retail prices were down in all categories except for portable hardware and accessories, which led to the greater dollar sales decline."

"December marks just the fourth month of the year where the industry saw an increase over last year. January and February were both up, and since the decline that began in March, only September experienced growth. The big sales this month, particularly on the hardware front, is a positive move for the industry headed into what will hopefully be a recovery year in 2010."

Hardware

"There are a lot of hardware records this month. The PS3 realized it's biggest month of sales ever, and the first time sales have exceeded 1 million units. The Wii and the DS also had their biggest sales months ever, and in fact the two platforms hold the top two spots in sales of any hardware device in a single month. Overall, it was the biggest month of sales for hardware on both a dollar and unit basis."

"This current generation of console hardware has outsold the last by more than 9 million units during the first 50 months in the market."

"Hopefully, the big increase in the overall install base of hardware systems will bring good things for software sales in 2010, especially with the incredible line-up of content coming out early in the year."

Software

"The best-selling game of the month was New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which also captures the third spot on the annual top 10 list for 2009."

"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the fourth best-selling game of all time. In fact, 3 of the top 10 games of all time are Call of Duty games."

"The music/dance genre was the best-selling genre for the month and second best for the year behind first-person shooters."

"Madden NFL 10 had a big month selling 1.5 million units across all platforms, besting last December's performance of the '09 game. December's sales made up some of the lost ground realized out the gate when the title came to market in August."

"Software sales in December were more concentrated among the top games this year than last. This year, 20% of sales came from the top SKU's, whereas last December it was just 12%."

"6 of the top 10 games totaling 20.8 million units for the year were on the Wii platform as compared to 4 last year at 19 million units."

Accessories

"7 of the top 10 accessories items in December were for the Wii platform, along with the Xbox Live Points card and wireless controllers for the Xbox 360 and PS3."

Nintendo Press Release

A holiday shopping frenzy helped both of Nintendo's video game systems make history: Nintendo's Wii™ home system sold more than 3.8 million units in December, a new all-time single-month U.S. sales record. The Nintendo DS™ Lite and Nintendo DSi™ hand-held systems combined to sell more than 3.3 million, the second biggest month in U.S. history.

Those strong December numbers helped propel the Nintendo DS franchise to more than 11.2 million sold in 2009, a new U.S. calendar-year sales record for any video game system – ever. The Wii console finished 2009 with 9.6 million sold. Of all the Wii consoles ever sold in the United States since its November 2006 launch, nearly one-fifth (18.7 percent) were sold during November and December 2009.

"Wii, Nintendo DS Lite and Nintendo DSi combined to sell more than 7 million units in the month of December alone," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Clearly there is overwhelming consumer demand for fun games, motion controls and value. This remarkable hardware sales surge presents a tremendous software opportunity for Nintendo and its third-party partners as we head into 2010."

Lifetime U.S. sales for Wii have now surpassed 27.2 million units. No other home console has ever sold so many so quickly. Lifetime U.S. sales for the Nintendo DS franchise have topped 38.8 million units, surpassing lifetime sales of the Game Boy™ Advance franchise.

As always, great software drives hardware sales. In December alone, consumers placed six Nintendo games in the top 10 best-sellers of the month. These include New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii at No. 1 with more than 2.8 million sold, Wii Sports Resort™ at No. 2 with more than 1.7 million sold, Wii Fit™ Plus with the Wii Balance Board™ accessory at No. 3 with more than 1.7 million sold, Wii Play™ at No. 6 with more than 1.0 million sold, Mario Kart™ Wii at No. 7 with more than 936,000 sold and Mario & Luigi™: Bowser's Inside Story for Nintendo DS Lite and Nintendo DSi at No. 10 with more than 656,000 sold.

For all of 2009, Nintendo finished with seven of the top 10 best-selling games of the year. These include New Super Mario Bros. Wii at No. 2 with more than 4.2 million sold, Wii Sports Resort at No. 3 with more than 4.2 million sold, Wii Fit™ at No. 4 with more than 3.5 million sold, Mario Kart Wii at No. 5 with nearly 3.1 million sold, Wii Play at No. 6 with more than 3.1 million sold, Wii Fit Plus™ at No. 8 with more than 2.4 million sold and Pokémon™ Platinum Version at No. 10 with more than 2.0 million sold.

All numbers contained in this document are according to the NPD Group, which tracks U.S. video game sales.

That's a lot of Wii's! If only there were some third party willing to put the effort, and maybe Nintendo's happiness could be shared.

Agreed.

I like the figures for PS2. It basically insinuates that around 150,000 people got a PS2 for Christmas.

Gutted.

Wii losing momentum eh? It sold around 20 million worldwide in 2009. I believe thats comparable to PS2 at its top.

Yes, the only people who are saying the Wii is losing momentum are:

a) Idiots

b) Fanboys of other systems

If the Wii only sells half as well for the next three years it'll do 100m+ units in it's lifetime.

If you look at current sales trends, the 360 is now the console in trouble and is selling the least out of the three. This may well cause Microsoft to go for another early start and force another generation of consoles.

Assuming Natal is a failure, anyway.

Assuming Natal is a failure, anyway.

Natal is a weird choice, because when you look at the 360 market place and who it is aimed at, I can't see it appealing to that many 360 owners. I know they are trying to attract new gamers onto the 360, but to be honest I'm not sure that will happen either. I also think Natal goes a step too far. I love the Wii remote and think it has revolutionised some games and I love it when implemented well with most games. But you still need some buttons and some form of feedback in your hands.

Yeah, 360 people just arent buying casual games (or casual gamers isnt attracted to 360). Games like Viva Pinata 2, Lips and Banjo 3 were failures, even with decent marketing. I don't think Natal will change much.

I think PS3 is more of a threat. They have more mainstream followers thanks to PS1 and PS2.

What the hell was the point to that article?

I haven't played splosion man I must admit but I highly doubt it matches the platforming of the mario games. the only real point he makes about the game is it's more original... but is it more fun? He didn't say

Look new super mario bros is a lazy game yes but it still matches the fun of ANY other game out there if you go into it with the right mindset.

I can't believe IGN are calling Nintendo out on being lazy with NSMB. It's Bollocks.

The industry ALWAYS does this, but just because it is Nintendo (who, in fairness are probably one of the developers who recycle gameplay content and assets the least) they get called lazy for it. So they didn't include online modes in NSMB. And? Not everyone wants an online mode. It doesn't mean that NSMB is a 'lazy' title and thus Nintendo are 'lazy'.

If anything it is lazy, sensationalist journalism on IGN's behalf. Poor then that it would affect long-time gamers perceptions of a 2D Mario title. When, as you fairly stated, NSMB: Wii is a tremendous, inventive and FUN title. All that matters surely.

If only more gamers had the balls to stand up and say that they enjoyed a title, regardless of who it was 'aimed at' or who developed it, this industry would be a hell of a lot less cynical. Which, let's face it, affected a LOT of 3rd parties decisions to develop for Wii in the first place. (Maybe the main market of young adults and teens is the reason the industry is sometimes a childish, argumentative battleground - cool is everything perhaps?) Meh.

I'd like to say that I'm glad Wii has brought about a lot of what would be deemed 'shovelware' and a slew of new and older aged gamers. The industry has a responsibility for developing its own basis for existence and with more gamers and more content, the slew of different entertainment types can only be a boon for the future of the industry.

I am loving this generation, if not for the games, it's seeing journalism crying more and more and more how their least favorite console is ass raping the other ones in sales, and them trying to find a way of writing an excuse so it makes the Wii look bad :D

I lost respect for IGN after the Modern Warfare Reflex review. This load of tripe is just another nail in the coffin.

What this 'industry experts' seem to forget is there is a whole load of people that grew up with the simple, yet fun and addictive, gaming of Mario. They look at games on the 360 and they're a little overwhelmed.

New Super Mario Bros is not only getting young people into games, but it's re-engaging people who grew up on games and have since stopped playing.
