Papa Bear Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Hey guys, i apologise if this has been posted before but i came across this... www . tuvie . com / nintendo - wii - in - 2010 (Take out the spaces) I was hoping someone could give me a bit more information (if it's true) Cheers
darksnowman Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Hmm, you never know but I'd think its unlikely at this point. Heres the article for everyone to check out: The Nintendo Wii have revolutionized the way we know gaming but now it seems they are taking the same to the next level. After story about xbox 360 phone, now how about a mind-controlled game that Nintendo is proposing? T3 gives a little clue that all you have is a headset accessory that uses brainwaves to control characters and features immersing in-ear headphones. So just imagine a streamlined Wii emote with just one button, which you point and press and rest your brain takes over. Though brain-wave technology has already become a reality with Emotive pioneering in-game systems, but soon it seems Nintendo will come out with the first mind-controlled console on the market.
Guest Captain Falcon Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 That sounds way too costly for Nintendo to make (lateral thinking with withered technology anyone?) even though it has been around for a fair few years in one form or another. Plus, the headphone idea goes against the family play angle they have at the moment.
mcj metroid Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 no no no and no... I'll never forget those kind of pictures when we still didn't know what the revolution controller would be. mind-control lol.
Grazza Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 Mind control is one of those things I don't fancy at all. I'd much rather have some sort of 3D/virtual reality. It'll probably just be better controls and HD though, which is good enough on its own.
Jimbob Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 no no no and no... I'll never forget those kind of pictures when we still didn't know what the revolution controller would be. mind-control lol. Same here, they were some freaky pics. I think one i remember seeing was a GC pad with just one button on it.
david.dakota Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 If anyone is expecting new iterations of home hardware soon, i think you're sadly mistaken. Wii is selling crazily well. No pressure for Nintendo to release any new hardware, despite the lack of horsepower. 360 and PS3 are again selling solidly. There's no pressure for either to push for new hardware- now new configurations like a 360Motion or PS3Waggle are far more probable. This generation, i think, will take its inspiration from the handheld market, slight revisions to hardware to renew hype and interest. Maybe we should discuss this in 2013.

Agreed on this point, though I do think Nintendo need to sort out this storage problem and crank out some decent firmware updates to secure a rather long lifespan for the Wii.
Emasher Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 This isn't going to happen in the near future, its way to expensive, and people aren't going to like it, as I'm sure it will cross some invisible line. I think head-tracking is going to be the biggest step towards VR we see in the near future TBH. Why spend all that money developing something like that when what we have now is good enough.
david.dakota Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 I think head-tracking is going to be the biggest step towards VR we see in the near future TBH I'd agree. IGN reported on a camera gizmo that could identify eyes and fingertips, so for it to be able to track your face and rotate the camera accordingly would be a simple thing to do- and bloody superb for cover in shooters.

I was talking about this actually:
Guest Captain Falcon Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 I was talking about this actually: This video is no longer available it seems. And although I don't believe them, apparently they are sorry about it.
Papa Bear Posted March 1, 2009 Author Posted March 1, 2009 Hey thanks alot for ur input troops, i think i agree with the general consensus that it wont happen in the near future, although im sure its somethin that all interests us. like someone said, 2013 seems a bit more realistic for this sort of technology, why ruin the winning streak nintendo are on with this. When the Wii stops selling so well i think thats when nintendo will play this little card.
david.dakota Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 This should work better: I have seen that one before, but the problem i see is that you'll look a goof- and i don't think its that 'saleable' using ones eyes would effectively do the same without the goofball look.
Emasher Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 I have seen that one before, but the problem i see is that you'll look a goof- and i don't think its that 'saleable' using ones eyes would effectively do the same without the goofball look. That's the problem. Perhaps they could have little things that sit on the top or your ears or something. I think Nintendo's engineer's/designers are more than capable of solving that problem though.
Guest Captain Falcon Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Whilst I like the head tracking idea in principle, I'm not too sure how well it would work in reality. You wouldn't be able to use it for same screen multiplayer games - even split screen would be a pain since you'd have to be dodging the other people in room doing the exact same thing as you. It also requires you to sit dead square in front of the TV to work (again, not really possible with multiplayer). And I fail to see to major benefits it would bring to many game genres either, but I'm open to hear other peoples suggestions.
Emasher Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 I think FPS games would be the only games that would really benefit from it. But really it could add a nice 3D effect for any game. Multiplayer would be a problem, but with a little research they could probably get it to work in split screen at least. Not for something like Brawl though.
Nolan Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Idk about the rest of you, but I already play via brainwaves.
darkjak Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Mind controlled gaming isn't that far off, and I think it's the natural evolution of games, although I'd find it awkward not to use my hands while playing. I more like think it'll be like in fighterjets, where most controlls are controlled via levers, sticks and buttons, but certain actions, like swaping objects or weapons will be controlled by the mind/voice. I think that the XB360 and PS3 will continue to be their companies flagships. I however think that Nintendo should release a new console circa 2010-2011, quite simply a Wii with the power of a PS3 or more. By then it should be cheap to develop and produce such a machine.

I think the bigger question is really what Sony and MS are going to do. I can see MS releasing a new Xbox slightly more powerful than the PS3 around 2011/2012, but Sony waiting until 2014/2015 to replace their hardware. The only thing that could really push Sony and MS to do a major upgrade is if developers are having trouble porting PC games or something.

Doubtful, the only games I can think having trouble would be crysis except that it scales well for medium settings. And stalker clear sky, but thats due too doubts of the dev. Killzone proves deferred rendering(same as stalker) works fine. Other than that though...
david.dakota Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 I've said it before and i'll say it again. There is no need for Nintendo to be thinking of a time scale to replace Wii. If Wii is selling, it'd be crazy to start confusing the market by having Wii HD or whatever (look what happened with the whole 'third pillar' thing). However, do we think Nintendo couldlaunch a HD console in 2011? Personally, i'd be surprised if somewhere in Nintendo lied a HD console, pretty much ready to launch- possibly with an original launch date of December 06 - but put on Hiatus with the cheaper (current) Wii released instead to save costs and risk. But i don't see Wii sales dropping this year. If they did drop towards the end of the year, 2010 would, in this instance, become a 'transitional' year for Nintendo's internal teams, with many starting to develop titles for a HD console (probably with a two-three year lead time)- meaning 2012/13 for a Nintendo HD machine. Assuming Wii sells strong through 2010/11 it could be longer- 2013/14. When i see Wii's price drop to the equivalent of £99, i'll expect Wii HD 18 months- two years from then.
