McPhee Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Here's some direct links to the downloads on Microsoft's servers; Windows 7 64-bit: http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/3/3/633118BD-6C3D-45A4-B985-F0FDFFE1B021/EN/7000.0.081212-1400_client_en-us_Ultimate-GB1CULXFRE_EN_DVD.ISO Windows 7 32-bit: http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/3/3/633118BD-6C3D-45A4-B985-F0FDFFE1B021/EN/7000.0.081212-1400_client_en-us_Ultimate-GB1CULFRE_EN_DVD.ISO I do it because i love you guys You'll still need to get a key though, it's just so you can start downloading while they sort their servers out.
Shorty Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Really though? Edit : After more consideration I will give you a proper answer. Vista has developed to become a reliable OS. It's a shame it doesn't run like Server 2008. I think alot of people could benefit from the 15% speed gain. I love vista tbh, I can't understand the issues some people have with it. I've had it for months now, maybe a year, and never had a compatibility, crash or slowdown issue. I have XP on my netbook and I desperately miss certain features, like the start bar search, indexing (Windows Search does not make up for it, ugh), the network layout and aero spring to mind. I really want to try out Windows 7! At least they've posted a message now: Thanks for your interest in the Windows 7 Beta. The volume has been phenomenal—we're in the process of adding more servers to handle the demand. We're sorry for the delay and we'll re-post the Beta as soon as we can ensure a quality download experience. Here's some direct links to the downloads on Microsoft's servers;Cheers dude just hope I get on the site in time to get a key...

You legend! Still, I can't help but think my internet is going to disconnect while I try to download this..
Shorty Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Quick heads up, beta available again got my key edit: sweet, installing "your update may take several hours to complete" *facepalm*
McPhee Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Got mine last night, but the download is taking forever! Won't have it until tomorrow afternoon most likely
Ice9 Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 I'm torrenting the .ISO, and I'll just use the official key I get. With my wireless network its not likely to stay up for the 7 hours its going to take to download.
Charlie Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 I'm downloading at 600Kb/s, should be done soon. Only thing is I don't have any blank DVDs here so going to have to wait until tomorrow to install it. Ice9: The download manager MS makes you download has a resume function if you get disconnected.
Raining_again Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Is this done with a Vista key, or do you have to register/pay for one?

Shorty Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Windows Live ID is enough for a key not sure when I'm meant to put it in though... installation is nearly done.
Raining_again Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Good stuffs! ^^; You all going for the 64 bit or are there some 32bit'rs out there? Is there any reason to go for one over the other?
Charlie Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Don't think my computer can support 64bit so I just went 32. Probably should try and find that out actually... Currently installing it at the moment, will let you know how I get on...
McPhee Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 If you've had a new PC since the days of Pentium 4 then it should be 64-bit. IIRC all Intel Core and i7 processors are 64-bit and AMD Athlon X2, Phenom, Phenom II and newer Sempron (not sure about Athlon single core). There's no reason to go 32-bit if you have a 64-bit processor unless you need applications that aren't available for 64-bit. Windows Vista and Windows 7 are perfectly stable and compatable under 64-bit so most users will be fine, it's just specialist applications that are beind the times (most of the time it's CAD stuff).
Shorty Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 I stick with 32 bit out of habit - what do you gain from using 64bit? I'm always concerned that some small 3rd party app I really like won't work. I've installed Windows 7 32bit - if I get the ISO for 64bit can I just upgrade from one to the other do you think? Anyway Windows 7 - actually I like it so far! It's taking a little getting used to, I was never a big fan of the mac docking so now I pretty much have to become a fan - because it feels the same to me organisation is nice though, it's fast - especially little things like finding and connecting to a wireless network - that always used to be a bit clunky and now it's very smooth. Edit: ah it seems I can't upgrade so I'm stuck with 32 bit now unless I go all out and do a fresh install (which I'm not.)

It certainly sounds promising! I agree, connecting to wireless networks did seem clunky also ejecting a USB disk was. Have they improved that? 64Bit has a number of benefits the main one for myself is allowing the OS to recognise that you have 4Gb+ of ram.
McPhee Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Aye, pretty much the RAM. The OS should run a bit faster though too.
Gizmo Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 If I upgrade to Windows 7, will it keep all my settings and stuff or will I have to redo everything? I fancy getting rid of Vista, never did really like it, but I can't be bothered to go through setting up my network and such again.
Guest Jordan Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 If I upgrade to Windows 7, will it keep all my settings and stuff or will I have to redo everything? I fancy getting rid of Vista, never did really like it, but I can't be bothered to go through setting up my network and such again. It'll drag everything over, but this is a beta and should not be used as your primary OS. Apparently Windows 7 is pretty damn snappy on Atom netbooks such as the Vaio P and MSI Wind. Awesome. As in, faster than XP.
Gizmo Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Meh, I won't then. I really really want XP back.
Shino Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Meh, I won't then. I really really want XP back. Why? I do like that Windows 7 seems to run on anything.
Oli1983uk Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 I have just installed Windows 7, as I was in need of formatting my comp. Been using for a little bit now and loving it. I am finding that it is running faster than vista did.

Gizmo Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Why? I do like that Windows 7 seems to run on anything. My computer runs really slowly with Vista. Like, if the computer is doing anything in the background at all its really laggy with tabbing between windows. I had to upgrade to Vista after my hard drive failed and I had to reformat. I couldn't find my XP recovery disc, the only one I had being my sisters Vista one. I was in need of some files off the hard drive in a hurry, so I went with Vista. By the time I had sorted everything out again it didn't seem worth it to buy an XP recovery disc and go through sorting everything again.
McPhee Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Guess which muppet printed his key code as an XPS file and now can't figure out how to open the bloody thing?... None of the software i can find seems to install properly so it looks like i'll be needing a new key
