I look at reviews mostly and buy games that the reviewer has judged to have good gameplay elements.

Be Advised you can select more than one.

Basically, I do my research by checking out reviews, trailers, and sometimes who made the game. But some games get bad reviews, yet I know I will enjoy them if they have certain features such as cool combos or awesome unlockables and hefty replay value. They also have to have negatives that aren't too negative. Something that you can look past such as repetition (dynasty warriors), poor/difficult controls (armored/armoured core) or a questionable graphics engine (nothing comes to mind but i know that I have played some games that some considered ugly).

EDIT: Heh im with the majority as I went for:

Good gameplay elements

Good reviews

Frontal Nudity.

I usually go by reviews, but if I buy a sub-standard game, it's usually because of a cheap price or a dedication to a series.

If it's a Nintendo first party title, I'll most certinaly be considering buying it, due to my loyality to the "brand", but otherwise factors like online play come into it (defintley wouldn't have purchased MOH:H2 if it didn't have this feature), games which have been well-recived, have great gameplay, and are available at a bargain e.g Eledees for £9.99!
