ReZourceman Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 miniseries by Kathryn Immonen (presumably related to Stuart, who does the covers), They're fucking each other.
Paj! Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 I'm a pixie fan. Armour needs more love though. To be fair, she's in PSB!, one of a select group of New X-Men to play any sort of main part (her, X-23, Mercury, Blindfold, Rockslide and Anole). I should probably find out what Anole's powers are. I always think of him as the one with the crusty arms.
Munch Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 I need to take my credit card details off amazon, I woke up at about 4am this morning and in my groggy state I placed an order for about £50 worth of books, I barely even remembered it when I properly got out of bed, I am still waiting for my last order to come!
Paj! Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Paj's Irrelevant/Boredom-inspired Polls (1) Which is your favourite She-Hulk, based on any criteria? 1. She-Hulk - Jen Walters?! 2. All-New Savage She-Hulk - Lyra?! 3. Red She-Hulk - Betty Ross Banner?!
Dante Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 (edited) Superheroes 'poor role models for boys' Modern-day superheroes promote a macho, violent stereotype for young boys, according to a US psychologist's study. They differ greatly from superheroes of yesterday, who had a more vulnerable side, an American Psychological Association meeting was told. The only alternative male role model in modern media was the "slacker" who shirked responsibility, the study said. Professor Sharon Lamb surveyed 674 boys aged four to 18 to find out what they read and watched on TV and in films. With her team at the University of Massachusetts, she then analysed the types of male role models the boys were exposed to. It showed two main types of man - the aggressive superhero or the slacker who does not even try. "There is a big difference in the movie superhero of today and the comic book superhero of yesterday," said Professor Lamb. "Today's superhero is too much like an action hero who participates in non-stop violence; he's aggressive, sarcastic and rarely speaks to the virtue of doing good for humanity. "When not in superhero costume, these men exploit women, flaunt bling and convey their manhood with high-powered guns." Boys could look up to and learn from comic book heroes of the past because outside of their costumes, they were "real people with real problems and many vulnerabilities". She said the other option for boys was to be a slacker. "Slackers are funny, but slackers are not what boys should strive to be; slackers don't like school and they shirk responsibility. "We wonder if the messages boys get about saving face through glorified slacking could be affecting their performance in school." In a second presentation, Dr Carlos Santos, from Arizona State University, examined 426 middle school boys' ability to resist being emotionally stoic, autonomous and physically tough - stereotyped images of masculinity. He found that being able to resist macho images - especially aggression and autonomy - declines as boys transition into adolescence and this decline puts their mental health at risk. "Helping boys resist these behaviours early on seems to be a critical step toward improving their health and the quality of their social relationships." Edited August 16, 2010 by Dante
Paj! Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 I read that in the Metro today. It conjures up a Madonnagif response in me. I like how they don't take into account the child themselves? I watched Batman TAS and Power Rangers and other fairly "violent" kids stuff since I could, and read mature comics since I 8-9. And I turned out fine, I've never had the desire to beat someone up. If your child's a thug, don't blame Batman.
ReZourceman Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 VAN LENTE ASSEMBLES THE "DEAD AVENGERS" http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=27841 Sounds absolutely awful. The plot crux is everything I hate about comic books so yeah, I won't be getting it.
Paj! Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 (edited) Plus...who actually wants any of that lot back? Deathcry is a lol, but then again, only for a few moments. Found a blog that really appeals to me, where artists/designers/randoms redo comic book covers. http://coveredblog.blogspot.com/ Some are just the same but in their style, which seems a bit silly, but some are very humourous/well done. This sort of thing really appeals to me. I LOVE the little box in the top left, with him taking out his costume. I think that's brilliant. Lends the scene a whole kinda...story or something. Makes it more dynamic that it would be otherwise. Edited August 16, 2010 by Paj!

Dan_Dare Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Oh my god that series sounds shite. Mar-Vell is pretty interesting but do we actually want another Pym particle hero? We already have three, all of them stunners. Make it end!
Paj! Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 I'm weeping. I found out I missed a Frank Quitely talk/signing/he-draws-you-stuff event in an Edinburgh bookshop. He'll probably be back eventually...he lives not far away (Glasgow). Since finding this out, I've managed to track down where he works. I could turn up. Although I'd rather meet him in an audience-talker situation. And plus they obviously don't let shits in to talk to them, since it's like a collective studio space thing. Also big news of the moment (to those in the know) is that the Flex Mentallo miniseries by Quitely/Morrison is in talks of being turned into a trade, after years in limbo due to legal issues with Charles Atlas (of which Flex is a spoof or something like that). But that is probably one of the greatest comics I've ever read (is, if I'm honest), and feels like the backbone of Morrison's work. I might buy the issue (despite their inflated price due to this lack of tpb format) anyway though.
gmac Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 That would have been pretty cool to have been at. Marcos Martin (one of the Spiderman artists for Slott's upcoming run) is doing a signing/sketch thing at Forbidden Planet in Glasgow this Thursday, I would have went but I'm going to the football instead!

Paj! Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 I have to say, Finch's Batman paintings have so far interested me WAY more than his normal art. His Second Coming covers were ok at best, and some just looked rushed! This looks like a return to form.

Dante Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 That first cover looks like...shit. I take it that's Batman/Superman then? :p Its the cover for DC UNIVERSE LEGACIES #7 and it is about DC early 90's view of the DC world by the public.
Daft Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 I like this one. It's like Sesame Street on shrooms.
