But then, from Nintendo's point of view, whats a loss of 3 sales compared to the cost of putting s DVD player in every console (plus the licensing cost)?
To be fair, I understand Nintendo, but it's really cheap of them not to do it.

its so the can release a wii sp and have worthwhile features to include.

Im doubting we'll get a Wii SP, the Wii is upgradable through the USB ports and via firmware update so theres no need. A HDD and Media Player channel (compatable with loads of codecs like Divx, Xvid, x264 and h264) would be nice though :D I'd even pay a fair whack for it!

I had a ruler that had a calculator, clock, angle measure, and length measure built in. The Calculator was solar powered too. Matt black also....Awesome 80's

You too ?

Think I still have one of those beastsd kicking about, minus the battery cover.

As to the Wii playing DVD's, it would be a nice added extra, but more or less every modern device I have with a screen can play DVD's or media I have ripped to SD (IE. my phone).

I stick with the point that more or less every household has some method of playing DVD's and it is a minority requirement.

Hmm....DVD on Wii, or DVD on computer, complete with great upscaling on the same TV.....the choises.

It's just tight not to do it, most people won't buy or not buy the wii for a DVD player, it will make no difference. However plenty of kids who have a console in their bedroom but not as DVD player would have used it as a DVD player.

Anyway, modding the Wii to play DVD's is indeed illegal.

And as for Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z -note the "Z" it isn't used as in a slang-pural (as in Ballz) or replacing the last letter of a word. It is simply a suffix to point out it's a new story-arc, set after a timeskip-, the manga is very good and set new standards in it's time, and arguably even now. The anime is... meh, a pale shadow of it's source material, in my opinion. And one for the fact-fans: in the manga, there never was a "Z" to begin with. It was a simple continuation of Dragon Ball. They added the "Z" when adapting the story-arch to anime.

As for Budokai Tenkaishi 2 on Wii, it is a rather good game. Won't set the scene on fire, but then again, in how many game do you have to make a fireball-throwing gesture to blast your opponent to pieces? ;) It takes some getting used to (make that: a lot of getting used to), but once you got the grips on it, I never turned back to standard controles. It is way more dynamic with Wii-controls!

i'm still not convinced it is illegal (in the uk), although i can't say it isn't either.

anyone have links to "real" information regarding this?

and if the Z was a suffix, then it would be dragonballz. i prefer it that way too.

You need a license in every DVD playing device. With this mod, you don't pay that license fee, so therefore it's illegal.

i found this court case on the bbc. a court ruled that it was legal for this guy to watch dvds he had payed for, using a program he coded himself (and not paying a license). not a wii, but still a non licensed player.

these are the highlights:

"Mr Johansen said he created the DeCSS software to let him watch DVDs he purchased on a Linux computer rather than an expensive DVD player.

Mr Johansen maintained that he should have the right to watch films he had legally bought on a device of his choosing.

Now the Norwegian court has backed Mr Johansen and said there was "no evidence" that what he did was aiding DVD piracy.

With no evidence that Mr Johansen was engaged in piracy or that he was aiding others to illegally copy disks the Norwegian court had no choice but to acquit the teenager.

The court also ruled that it was not illegal to use DeCSS to watch legally obtained DVD films. "

That is Norway though, they are currently on a mission to kick the ass of every self-obsessed media company going. They probably did this one just for the shits and giggles

Kinda off topic but wasn't firmware updates supposed to be a feature for DS?

Also, there will be a new version of the Wii. The Lite was a huge success and Nintendo likes to eat money.

maybe. there was another similar case won in russia too.

it shows that the law surrounding this isn't just a black and white issue. the movie companies have to take you to court and then prove it illegal. whereas, if you downloaded and copy films, the law states you will be arrested and tried, even without the movie co's complaining.

it means that unlicensed players aren't strictly covered by european law and aren't immediately illegal, like a few people have stated already.

i'm not sure i heard this. most of the flash cards (G6 et al) do it already though. e.g. you can toggle the brightness, just by touching an icon on the main screen with g6 lite.
