Played this quite a bit now, my impressions:

First the bad:

- No bongo support (which is where most reviews seemed to call it a day & give it 4/10).

- No online.

Now the good:

- Lots of actions that wouldn't be possible with bongos.

- Damn fun to play & watch other people play.

- Beautiful graphics and a rock solid 60fps.

- Gameplay balance is tight. We're talking Jack Thompson's ass here - yes, that tight. Haven't had any Sega "why are they overtaking me when i should be 1/2 a lap ahead" or Mario Kart "Punish the player for being good" moments.

- Loads of stuff from the DK universe reused - there's wasps zingers, barrels, Rambi, Enguarde, mine karts, and almost all the Kongs & Kremlings you can think of.

- Boosts well laid out, so that you can theoretically chain boosts off barrels continuously. No more complaints that the game's too slow.

It's a toughie to answer the "couldn't they just have kept in bongo compatibility" question - clearly it would've been nice to still support it even as a gimmick. But then there are clearly a lot more features in the final game than would've been possible with the bongos, eg. punching with the A button, pulling & letting go of the analog stick to charge up a boost, midair waggle combos for bonus bananas, etc. It's also unknown how much extra work cube controller (ie. bongo) support needs - out of the box with Wii development? Or need extra libraries, coding etc?

Overall impression: definitely worth having, esp since you can get it for £22.99

I totally disagree with you:

Very very underrated game!

I recommend it to everyone that wants to play something similar to Mario Kart but in the DK universe.

Very good game!

Dont mess with Darksnowman when it comes to the DK universe, he will hunt you for sport in a giant gorilla outfit!

You got this, didn't you? Can you add anything to this recent flurry of positive feedback from Mr_Bogus and Panmusic? I'd passed on DK Jet so far due to the reports of it just not being that fun... I think I'll get it sometime when the price is right because, when I watched videos of it in the past, I did like the look of the game. And if it was actually kinda fun, that would be a good bonus!

I nearly bought it as I had it preordered but then everyone one various forums started slagging it off so I cancelled it. Im looking to pick it up at some point but I really dont want to pay for than 20 quid for it as it seems a bit of a marmite game.

Well then, I bought DK Jet today... only to find that its actually DK Jet Race eh? Didn't notice that til now. My reason for buying it was that it was £15 new in Game- Hero-of-Time tipped me off on it and at £15 it was definitely worth taking the plunge with.

So far so good. Not as bad as reviews would have you believe and I've found that there is more depth to the game than anyone had even hinted at... but first things first: I had to delete a VC game to make room for 22 block save file. Street Fighter is gone. After that, its been plain sailing! There is a lengthy tutorial mode with Cranky Kong which eases you in to the play mechanics. A few problems that I encountered were... Cranky's stupid "voice" and before one of the tutorials he points out that there are iron barrels. IRON BARRELS?? I think he's going senile because everyone knows they are steel kegs!

After that calamity you can go onto the racing which is hellishly slow but I've only played on beginner, so lets hope it gets quicker when it gets harder. I've found that races are long as it didn't seem rare for it to take 1min 30 to do a lap, meaning, this is not your fathers Mario Kart. Graphics are fine and dare I say it... good! I like the style even though the actual locations are a bit duff... I mean... Mammoth Glacier? A volcano thats not called Hot Top Volcano or something even to do with Krem Kauldron? We'll just take it that DK Jet Race isn't set on DK Isle.

Multiplayer seems good. Vertical split for 2player... however after a few races I was starting to feel a bit motion sick. Never really felt that from a game before. There are challenges too, with Candy Kong, which I never knew would be in the game. So there seems to be some stuff to sink your teeth into!

However... Lanky Kong is in it. :nono:
