  1. Treats one of the best RPGs ever with the respect it deserves. Edit: damn you Ashley! I like your enthusiasm (even it is is mostly for VM...).
  2. Generally a nice guy, even if he claims he's a hardened cynic...
  3. Hmph. I'm a fan of Dawkins, even if I don't entirely agree with his philosophy. But I did get the exact definition off wikipedia. So I knew what a meme was before the concept became a meme...
  4. Yeah, that kind of it. "A unit of cultural information transferable from one mind to another." Of course the internet, or 4chan or whatever can act as the culture.
  5. I don't think this thread should be derailed by getting into arguments, that's not what it's about.
  6. It comes from Richard Dawkins, the famous atheist zoologist from Oxford. He used it in The Selfish Gene to describe Religion... But this use of the word is right. He'd probably approve.
  7. I can't give decent advice, as I've never experienced anything like this, but it looks like you should keep yourself calm and think about what to do rationally... also, you should probably stay away from this Chris guy. I'm sorry to hear it though... you don't seem to be having much luck at the moment.
  8. By the way, out of interest, do most internet geeks etc. who use the term meme know who invented it and for what purpose? I always wonder what he thinks (if he knows) of the way it's used now.
  9. I think you argued the same point as me in some debate or other. Can't remember what it was about though...
  10. Ah, kanji... I'll learn more of them next month onwards.
  11. This is true. In fact, the popularity of Japan annoys me, because it gives people like us a bad image, in both Japan and England.
  12. The majority of people who want to move to Japan want to do so for stupid reasons, and think Japan can do no wrong, etc. So they get disappointed if/when they get there and go home. A few people actually realise what the country is like, and try and learn the language first and so on.
  13. Pantalaimon is voiced by Adam Godley, whoever he is. I don't know any of the other voices.
  14. No, some my friends read the first couple at about 10... they can't have got as much out of them. Actually, I think I may have read them at 12 though...
  15. Yes, it is to some degree a bildungsroman series, for both Lyra and Will. But that doesn't mean it's aimed at any group in particular. However, in this case, I think the publishers specify that it is for "young adults". Nevertheless, the vast majority of "young adults" would find it boring and/or not understand it.
  16. HDM is undeniably aimed at teenagers, but that doesn't make it worse. The problem with this family film thing is that the film won't be dark enough... the actual books were pretty dark in parts, and that probably won't be reflected in the films. I too find Lord of the Rings very boring... *awaits flaming*
  17. According to everyone at my school who's doing it (not me), D1 is ridiculously easy. I find C the easiest... I got 100 UMS for C2 to 4. I find S1 harder than S2 and 3. M is all fairly hard, though I managed 100 UMS on M2. Here's a decision mathematics book, and here's the second one. They were written by a teacher at my school. I think after I take these modules, I might learn DE (differential equations) and FP3 (further pure 3) for fun, without taking the exams.
  18. I'm finishing A2 further maths this January. M3 is mechanics 3, same for statistics, FP stands for further pure. Sorry, but you need to be more clear... half of those could mean a multitude of things. Unless it's my homework...
  19. Was the magesterium in the book? It's so long since I've read it, but I can't remember anything about the magesterium. Also, according to the official site, the daemons are puppets...
  20. I had M3 today. Was mostly okay. I've got S3 on Friday, then FP2 on Tuesday and FP1 on Thursday. I think he was trying to ask what the syllabus of your course was.
  21. 1 (b) t^7 (e) k^20 (f) Could you write it out with more brackets? It may be any number of things. (g) Ditto. 2 (a) 1/(t^3) (b) 4/(e^7) 3 (a) 17^(1/2) (b) More brackets needed again. © Same.
  22. 1. (a) t^2 = -36 t = 6, -6 (b) x = 0, 7/2 © (2n+1)(n-4) = 0 n = 4, -1/2 (d) (k^2) - 4k - 21 = 0 (k+3)(k-7) = 0 k = 7, -3 2. x(x-7) = 30 (x^2) - 7x - 30 = 0 (x-10)(x+3) = 0 x = 10, -3 But -3 is impossible in this situation, as it would make both sides of the rectangle negative, so x = 10.
