  1. Alongside Simon and Domstercool's points, my personal view is that the whole debate on PS's power vs 360's power (and the spin) is a moot point in this "race". Japanese developers who have provided the console style gaming for decades will have to choose a console. Following the ill-conceived Xbox360-launch-campaign in Japan, the sales there has been predictably poor. So the devs won't switch to 360 from PS brand. A lot of their main titles are power hungry, so arguably many of them will not move to Wii either, leaving PS3 as the only choice. PS3 has a lot of problems at the moment, but in a long run, it could become the host of console traditionalism particularly a few years down the line when it's cheaper and many games are readily available. Introduction of Xbox brand nudged a section of console gaming towards PC-centric gaming and also created a new breed of console gamers out of PC gamers. 360 continues this movement. But there are many gamers who were weaned on the more traditional console gaming - Japan-centric gaming. There is a massive market for it around the world and only a fraction of it will be on 360. In other words, there will be a contrast in style of gaming between PS brand and Xbox brand, whereas until now they were consolidated into PS2. This is a significant factor, much greater than the debate of processing power. Many people in Cyberspace are already writing off PS3, but that's as ridiculous as those who wrote off Nintendo DS; it's mostly based on flawed pre-launch mumbo-jumbo. A little further analysis would reveal a whole different ball game in this new gen.
  2. Lol Moria. Actually, I guess you people deserve an apology from me if the Meaningless thread has caused problems. From my point of view, often a forum was cluttered with people posting fairly random comments, which may be interesting for some but not for all. Originally it came from my sentiments that among us we could use some time to socialize talking about complete bullcrap, just like in real life; often greater friendship and understanding among us come out of them. My intention was to unite all that under one thread to cut out the persistent scrolling in the main page of the forum, which often had more meaningful threads that deserved attention - but they would often scroll down quickly and disappear to the next page when "meaningless posts" are posted. I thought it was reasonable given that it was posted in "General Chit Chat" section; at the end of the day, this site is about gaming and Nintendo. So naturally you would've thought that the direction of the site wouldn't be influenced by such a trivial, generalized thread. If enough of you feel that I have brought harm here, I wouldn't mind to see that Meaningless thread locked or frozen. I've always liked this community and I meant no harm.
  3. Out of a random curiosity (but possibly a significant one), none of you happen to have dealt with a toiletry company called 'PHY'? If not it's ok... if yes, your knowledge may turn out to be precious.
  4. Personally, I feel that fanboism here blew up (if only a tad) during CE days to get to where we are now. In fact I came across relatively very fanboy-ish in those days. Overall I like them all. I like it here as it is. Times change and things are meant to change. On comments about xbox forums. I do agree they are much more... how would I put it, childish and short-tempered. Or to put it deplomatically, vulgar and intellectually challenged. I've come across situations where a little bit of disagreement or constructive criticism leading to "**** you idiot go suck your ****ing mother's *******". And I'm like, blimey, sorry I'm unarmed so don't shoot me. That surprises me. I would've thought Nintendo community would have greater extremes due to big splits in demography. But not so. I guess it may mean the teen-centricism is more pronounced in 360 community. Or do they have greater representation of US supporters? If so, it might be to do with a manifestation of patriotism in console-form at international level. Perhaps we're better off here just because it's more eurocentric. Many forums all over the place may have declined somewhat (perceptively), but that may be due to the success of the forum; as more people join, less family-like it becomes. Whatever's the case, it's a fascinating subject.
  5. Yeah I did... and I did find it funny. Instinctively. But intellectually, I have mixed feelings about all this. I think it would've been better if he had "made up" a nonexistant country that sounds like a real country somewhere around middle east/asia which is believable, but doesn't actually exist. I can see how Borat is ultimately offensive and sets a dangerous precedence. "Borat" is not a comedy, but a collection of situational happenings which are deliberately set up. I feel ashamed to find it funny in the first place.
  6. Thanks SO much guys for your replies. It's kind of sorted now (at a basic level anyway). I guess the biggest hurdle has been its numerous names - generally called Urinal cakes, but as you lot have suggested "Urinal deodorizer block" and "Urinal blocks". The reason why I needed it was because I had a neighbour who installed a urinal - surreal but true - and he wanted one and asked me to search the internet as he's clueless. Apparently the bathroom plumber who installed it had no clue either. In one of the pubs I visit they use a urinal cake that isn't actually a urinal cake. It's a plastic casing that goes over the hole, but it contains a urinal cake inside (more maticulously designed than the amazon.com one). It looks really cool. Your piss would pass through it and get deoderized. The nice thing about it is that the casing forces a nice distribution of urine whichever way you shower it, so that every cubic centimetre of urine is evenly affected by the cake. It's basically more efficient. It's a pretty big pub. I haven't had the courage to ask one of the staff to get me the landlord just for a stupid urinal cake. I guess I'll have to settle with one of those uncool prehistoric ones. I'll get back to you if I find out more about it. These days nearly every subject is covered by the internet, but I'm amazed by how little UK info there is on the internet about urinal cakes.
  7. I know it sounds bizarre, but I've come to a deadend so I must ask this. This sounds like a joke, but it's serious. Anyone here have any idea where you order urinal cakes!?? Tried well known local outlets (like Robert Dyas etc...) and googling it, but no luck. Funnier still, I get silly jokes on T shirts about Urinal cakes actually not being a "cake" at all (which I must admit I agree). Anyway, I really really want a urinal cake. Thank you.
  8. This brought tears to my eyes It seems more or less everything is kept as the original. I've heard some say online that they should've done more for graphics and music quality, but anything like that would've taken away the original from this remake. I can't wait!
  9. I think different people respond differently to this sort of thing. Would the "general" response be good? I really don't know. I'm a firm believer that all problems in our society is a result of the rest of our society. Invisible complex links and many degrees of separation make all of us responsible for the problems of our society, in ways that are often too deep for most of us to realise. Because of this, I've always believed that the ultimate cure for crimes/wars/poverty etc is to change not criminals, but the attitude of those of us who are supposedly "good" and "law-abiding". Obviously, we need to implement short-term goals too, which would involve reforming criminals. But to me, this is nothing but sweeping the whole issue under the carpet. I have a good reason to believe that this is hard to realise for most of us as we are by nature short-termists. And so the history is bound to repeat itself as we all repeat the same errors.
  10. Why? Not really. Usually I end up concentrating on getting the counts right that I end up wide awake. Reading novels usually works best for me. I fade out reading it and wake up the next day with the book on my face.
  11. I have a love & hate relationship with Doritos at night. I love it the first 20 or so, then the same ish taste begins to annoy me. Changing dips will later result in the same annoyance. Whats more annoying, I can't stop eating it. I hate it in my head, yet I can't help ploughing through the packet. My hand and mouth move by themselves. When it's all gone, I'm so glad that it's all over. I'm no longer forced to bombard my taste buds with that stuff. Ironically, I end up doing it time and time again.
  12. Sorry, I still don't understand the earlier reply. It doesn't seem relevant to my earlier post.
  13. No clue. I don't even see why that's relevant to the fact that he's just born into it and not practice it himself.
  14. On the BBC, it said Zidane doesn't practice Islam. I think he's just born into a family of it.
  15. Really? It was VERY hard. Usually 24 hours is quite doable, but I found that there's a crunch time around 30 ish and every hour becomes a living nightmare. Up to 24th hour, you can eat to stay up - greesy food works well. But after that I found no amounts of food/drinks made much difference. Usually what allowed me to stay up 30+ was an obsessive concentration on a task in a game, like camping for an item. I'd be so determined to get the item, I could survive those hours. The last few hours became hypnotic. I won't do it again. I really hate it. Life is much more fun living normally.
  16. Go to a restaurant, Tell the manager that you want to be a dish washing boy. Apparently there are always vacancies. It'll be £5 an hour. You could do like 10 hours a day 6 days a week. That'll make you £300 a week. It's a crap job. I have a friend who did this for about 3 months during his gap year. I just can't understand why, but he did and he says he got so much life experience out of that environment. He put on quite a bit of weight though because he was very well fed yet didn't spend a penny on food. Funny, but true.
  17. This one is so obvious - that hole is the onboard toothpaste and built-in toothbrush attachment. Haven't you guys heard of convergence hardware? No other next gen console will have this out of box.
  18. Talking of bad habit, my old college had a huge summer break of nearly 4 months and I got so addicted to the old EverQuest, you won't believe how bad it was. And somehow that game allowed me to stay awake for (average) about 35 hours a session. Looking back I still can't believe it. Now I can barely manage 24 and I get too sleepy and give in.
  19. I don't know about insomniac, but I tend to be up late due to working hours. To be honest its more of a life style than anything else. I like turning up to work tired and spend the rest of the day recovering so that I can be wide awake at midnight... LOL!!
  20. That's not really about 'missing the point', but you simply not liking the point. In other words, it seems to be a problem of personal preference rather than errors in the show. There's definitely a quirk about Dr who and I can understand that it may not be everyone's cup of tea. Some element of it grew on me over a period of time, but it did take time. For some, it never grows.
  21. faz99, I deliberately didn't distinguish the 2 here so that people may talk about both. Years ago for General studies I did a report on difference of perception, and I focussed on the subject of "sense of humour". As you know, different people find different things funny. As passtime, in the past a year or so I've been asking many people about their perception of horror, and it seems there is a parallel. Already in this thread, you can see the opinion is split. You are incorrect to assume that "alot of people will just refer to it[American version] and how crap it was". I wanted to hear from as many people as possible, and so I made this thread here. I say this as a generalization. The bottom line seems that some people are passive viewers, which means they don't get "into the character". Instead, they watch it as a floating camera. This type of viewers tend to prefer more realistic setup in a movie because they find it easier to get drawn into. Making a horror movie must be difficult, like comedy, because you can't really satisfy everybody. As for US/JPN versions, again, it seems to be a perceptive difference. US versions are usually crisper, more plausible and pacier, everything served nicely arranged on a single plate so you don't have to do work to enjoy it. JPN versions are usually more ambiguous, superstitious and leave a lot of dark corners (metaphorically speaking), as if to ponder about life. They tend to leave unanswered questions so that you'd have to use your imagination to fill in the gap. It seems to be a cultural difference. One prefers a clear and obvious display of beauty, while the other prefers an ambiguous and partially hidden display of beauty.
  22. The independence day itself, I don't mind. But the movie was rubbish. To be fair, it had some interesting effects in it and Will Smith was funny, but all the scenes with the president was too cheesy for me to stomach. In some ways I think that movie has given the independence day an unnecessary bad name outside the US.
  23. Have you seen it? Did you find it scary? If you didn't find it scary, I'd love to hear from you on why. I'm doing a small research on different perceptions of horror. I think I've pretty much gotten to the bottom of it now, but I could do with a bit more opinions. In particular, I find that there is a MASSIVE personal differences on how scary The Ring was. Cheers : peace:
  24. Wifi addition sounds interesting, but I had died already of hearing FFIII remake all those months ago. I think that's enough to get my heart racing for now. Anything more would shorten my life. I mean... bloody hell, it's the legendary FFIII. Looking up a dictionary could never be more fun, though I must admit I wonder how they are going to "update" the world. I hope the nostalgia factor wouldn't be too huge for me to handle. That box art, which is in the same style as the original FFIII box art, alone makes me nervous already.
  25. See you around Stocka. The beauty of cyberspace is that it's fairly statics and it's always here to welcome you back. I certainly will! Take care of yourself.
