myster0n Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 Maybe this is a bit far-fetched (or maybe this has already been mentioned and I missed it), but I just noticed something : On wii.nintendo.com -> Wii channel : Wii shop channel This is where users go to download video game content, including classic video games originally played on the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis and NEC TurboGrafx platforms. Here the users may buy Wii Points with a credit card or redeem a Wii Points Card purchased at retail to add points to their account, then redeem points to download these Virtual Console games. Users also can use points to download the Opera browser used in the Internet Channel. But on the european site, under Wii shop channel it says : The Wii Shop Channel is your access point for purchasing and downloading Virtual Console games and newly added Channels. In addition to payment by credit card, it is also possible to use Wii Points Cards to make purchases. Wii Points Cards will be available at retail stores wherever Wii is sold. They say nothing about using point to download the Opera browser. You can see the same on the internet channel itself : the US version says "Users download the Opera browser with Wii Points.", but on the european channel nothing is said about that. So, is it free in Europe? (please lock this thread if it's a dupe or if you think I'm grasping at straws)
mario114 Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 Intresting, paying for opera seems a little pointless when it's free (with a small add bar) on pc's.
raven_blade2006 Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 All I know is that it is free to download until June 2007. Then you have to pay for it with points.
Dyson Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 All I know is that it is free to download until June 2007. Then you have to pay for it with points. Link for this please?
Hellfire Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 What raven said is true, don't remember where I read it though.
myster0n Posted September 15, 2006 Author Posted September 15, 2006 That was only for Japan : http://gonintendo.com/?p=5592 So US Wii fans are getting Wii Sports as a pack-in for the launch of the Wii, but the poor Japanese have been left in the cold…or have they. While these two items may not equal each other, it appears that the Japanese public will be able to download the Opera browser for free until June 2007. That is what the Japanese site is stating anyway. Click the link below and check it out for yourself (navigate to the Wii browser page). Thanks to Magnus for the heads up.

*Dalco* Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 hopfully it will be free but if not i can't see it costing that many points tbh, out if interest is this the first console to have a full internet browser?
conzer16 Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 the browser is built in nintendo has said this. Where exactly did they say this? Link??
Rick Dangerous Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 Whats the point in using opera on the wii anyway? wont the tv resolution make websites look awful and really hard to use?
*Dalco* Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 Where exactly did they say this? Link?? i think it was at E3 they said it or one of those key note speeches but it not recent so it looks like it has changed and is now not built in
DCK Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 Right, it's odd to pay for Opera. Good thing ours is free though. I wonder if we get a Wii keyboard sometime.
thomaschung Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 it does not come built in with the Wii. they've changed their mind, you will have to download it and most likely you will have to pay for it as well. also, don't expect it on launch day.
Blue_Ninja0 Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 hopfully it will be free but if not i can't see it costing that many points tbh, out if interest is this the first console to have a full internet browser? Dreamcast DS PSP AFAIK. Maybe there are others.
Guest Jordan Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 Dreamcast one was pretty bad... Web browsing on a TV just isn't ideal unless its a decent LCD one. The fact is, writing is very difficult to see.
