Dante Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 19, 2010 ‘2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’ (-42%) hits a hat-trick of weeks at No1 despite strong competition from 3 new games making their debuts in the Top 5 this week. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 title ‘Alan Wake’ enters at No2, only 1,000 sales behind FIFA. First announced back in 2005 and developed by Finnish Max Payne developer Remedy Entertainment, Alan Wake also tops the Xbox 360 chart almost 12,000 sales ahead of Capcom’s newcomer ‘Lost Planet 2’. Although released early (on Tuesday rather than Friday) and on both Xbox 360 and PS3, ‘Lost Planet 2’ has to settle for No3 in the All Formats Chart. Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ falls to its lowest position for 7 weeks, slipping to No4 but maintaining its position as the week’s top selling Wii game despite a 19% drop in sales. EA have this week’s third new entry at No5 with ‘Skate 3’ and is the most represented publisher in the Top 10 thanks to a 5% rise in sales for ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ at No6. Xbox 360 and PS3 newcomers ‘Lost Planet 2’ and ‘Skate 3’ enjoy most success on Microsoft’s format with 66% of sales on Xbox 360 for ‘Lost Planet 2’ and 68% for ‘Skate 3’. ‘Modern Warfare 2’ (-14%) slips down from No3 to No7 after 3 weeks of promotion at retail. Final Fantasy XIII bounces back into the Top 10 after 8 weeks outside it, up from No14 to No8, boosted by price promotions which push sales up 90%. Nintendo’s regular big hitters ‘Wii Fit Plus’ and ‘Wii Sports Resort’ fall to No’s 9 and 10 respectively. Neither title has been out of the All Formats Top 10 since they were launched in July (Wii Sports Resort) and November (Wii Fit Plus) last year. There are a large number of re-entries this week thanks to strong price promotions at retail, notably ‘Call of Duty: World at War’ back at No15, ‘Nier’ at No23, ‘Lips: I Love the 80s’ at No25, ‘Bioshock 2’ at No30, ‘Bayonetta’ at No31 and ‘Napoleon: Total War’ at No35. Dante Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 20, 2010 Rockstar/Take 2 debut at No1 with the long-anticipated ‘Red Dead Redemption’ for 360/PS3. It is the second All Formats No1 this year for Take 2 (‘Bioshock 2’ made No1 in week 6, 2010) and the first Rockstar/Take 2 All Formats No1 since ‘GTA IV’ back in week 18, 2008. Overall sales of ‘Red Dead Redemption’ are enough to rank No11 in terms of best ever weekly sales on this particular chart (9th best in terms of 360 titles, 11th best in terms of PS3 titles). EA’s ‘2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’ (-25%) drops down to No2 after 3 weeks on top and Ubisoft actually climb one place to No3 with perennial favourite ‘Just Dance’ (-13%). Nintendo climb 5 places to No4 with ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (+20%). Disney Interactive Studios debut at No5 with ‘Split/Second: Velocity’ for 360/PS3 and Ubisoft debut at No9 with multi-format ‘Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands’ – the film of the 2003/2004 videogame ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time’ has also just been released at the box office. Dante Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 21, 2010 Rockstar/Take 2’s sandbox western ‘Red Dead Redemption’ holds the chart to ransom claiming its second week at No.1 despite a 40% drop in sales. Which means that THQ’s new entry ‘UFC 2010: Undisputed’ is unable to match the chart topping success of last year’s UFC debut release, slamming in at No2. The next four places have shuffled down one with EA’s ‘2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’ down from No2 to No3, Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ down from No3 to No4, Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit Plus’ down to No5 and Disney’s ‘Split/Second: Velocity’ down to No6. Activision’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ bounces back to No7 after a one week absence from the top 10 followed by Ubisoft’s ‘Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands’ stepping up a place to No8. Capcom’s ‘Lost Planet 2’ moves down to No9 and Nintendo’s ‘Wii Sports Resort’ rounds off the top 10 at No10. Outside of the Top 10 we have espionage RPG ‘Alpha Protocol’ from Sega debuting at No13 followed by Activision’s new racer ‘Blur’ at No14 and starting out at No37 is movie tie-in ‘Clash of the Titans: The Video Game’. Dante Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 23, 2010 Rockstar/Take 2’s ‘Red Dead Redemption’ (-34%) holds off video games legend Mario and becomes the first game of 2010 to achieve 4 consecutive weeks at No1. It was tight at the top with just over a thousand sales between the two, but the critically acclaimed ‘Super Mario Galaxy 2’ failed to take the top spot in the All Formats chart, settling for No2. As the World Cup begins this week EA’s tie-in ‘2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’ (-11%) slides down to No3 followed by Nintendo’s ‘Rooms: The Main Building’ (+76%) which has jumped up the charts from No12 to No4. Two Wii titles are next with Ubisoft’s chart regular ‘Just Dance’ (-27%) at No5 and Nintendo’s fitness sequel ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-33%) at No6. Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (-27%) remains grounded at No7 for a third week in a row, with EA sim expansion ‘The Sims 3: Ambitions’ (-40%) moving down to No8. THQ’s fighter ‘UFC 2010: Undisputed’ (-60%) takes a tumble to No9 and Nintendo’s ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-37%) is relaxing at No10. Outside of the Top Ten the only new entry to feature was EA’s ‘Green Day: Rock Band’ charting at No14. The World Cup is under way with sales of EA’s ‘2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’ up 16% this week, however it is not enough to shift it from the No3 spot. Last week, around 50 units separated Nintendo’s ‘Rooms: The Main Building’ at No4 from Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ at No5, however this week it’s ‘Just Dance’ that has the tiny sales advantage as it moves from No5 to No4. ‘Modern Warfare 2’ (-10%) moves up one place to No6 ahead of a price-promoted ‘Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands’ (+18%), which re-enters the Top 10 at No7, up from No12. Other than FIFA, Prince of Persia is the only Top 10 title to gain sales this week. Nintendo’s Top 10 regulars ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-26%) and ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-12%) are at No’s 8 and 10 respectively, while Activision’s ‘Blur’ (-5%) shifts back into the Top 10, up from No11 to No9. This week’s two Top 40 new entries can’t make the Top 10 as ‘International Cricket 2010’ from Codemasters debuts at No12 and the critically-acclaimed PSP exclusive ‘Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker’ sneaks in at No18. Nintendo’s ‘Super Mario Galaxy 2’ (-42%) and EA’s ‘2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’ (-36%) also shuffle down a place at No3 and No4 respectively. 505 Games are in at No5 with cheeky title ‘Naughty Bear’ followed by another new entry, Namco Bandai Games’ ‘Demon’s Souls: Black Phantom Edition’ at No6. Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ (-17%) therefore misses a beat with a drop to No7 and Activision Blizzard’s new entry ‘Transformers: War For Cybertron’ rolls out at No8. EA’s ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ sneaks back into the top ten at No9, which means fellow FPS, Activision’s ‘Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2’, is down at No10. Dante Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 27, 2010 Microsoft’s sandbox shooter sequel ‘Crackdown 2’ secures No1, beating the original game’s No2 debut position back in Week 8 2007 and claiming Microsoft’s first All Formats No1 for 2010. The Xbox 360 exclusive causes Warner Bros. Interactive’s ‘Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4’ to slip down a place to No2 and Rockstar/Take 2’s ‘Red Dead Redemption’ follows suit, moving down to No3. Ubisoft’s ‘Dance on Broadway’ almost doubles in sales from last week, moving from No6 up to No4 and EA’s ‘2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’ holds steady at No5. Nintendo’s ‘Super Mario Galaxy 2’ takes a tumble, down from No3 to No6 and EA’s ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11’ gets a bogey also moving down three places from No4 to No7. This is even more impressive when you take into account that the original Xbox 360 was launched across two versions (Pro and Core). A great week for Microsoft is ensured with the format holder’s XB360 exclusive title ‘Crackdown 2’ holding on to top spot in the All Formats Chart for a second week. A 36% drop in sales is not enough for it to be caught by Ubisoft’s ‘Dance on Broadway’ (-9%), which climbs 2 places to No2, only around 800 units behind ‘Crackdown 2’. Lego Harry Potter’s spell on the charts is slowly wearing off as it drops one place to No3 (-31%), while another previous No1, ‘Red Dead Redemption’ (-19%) also slips one place, down to No4. There is only one new entry this week, Disney’s ‘Toy Story 3’, new at No5, while the rest of the All Formats Top 10 all make way by each falling one place. Microsoft also benefit from retailer price promotions and bundling on ‘Alan Wake’ (+98%) that helps shoot it back up the Charts from No23 to No11. Another retailer promoted title, ‘Bioshock 2’ (+97%) enjoys a similar jump, up from No24 to No12. Dante Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 28, 2010 Disney can celebrate long and hard thanks to ‘Toy Story 3’ which rises from a debut position last week of No5 to claim No1 this week (+78%). The game launched on Friday 16th July, ahead of the UK release of the film on Monday 19th July. ‘Toy Story 3’ is already the second highest grossing film of 2010 worldwide and had the highest grossing opening weekend for a Pixar film…all of which helps to explain the huge rise in sales this week and means that Disney claim the overall No1 for the first time since week 22, 2007 (the second week of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’). Rockstar/Take 2 climb 2 places to No2 with former No1 ‘Red Dead Redemption’ (-13%) and Ubisoft drop one place to No3 with ‘Dance on Broadway’ (-16%). This week’s lone new entry is Square/Nintendo’s ‘Dragon Quest IX’ for DS debuting at No9, while Microsoft’s 360 exclusive and former No1 for the last 2 weeks ‘Crackdown 2’ drops all the way to No10 (-59%). Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ at No11 (-29%) is outside of the Top 10 for only the second time in 37 weeks…however the title is fast closing in on the all time unit sales record here in the UK, currently held by a certain ‘Dr Kawashima’ on DS – more news on this topic in a few weeks. Dante Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 30, 2010 After 12 years in the making, Activision Blizzard’s real-time strategy sequel ‘Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty’ flies in at No1, which is the first PC exclusive to hit the All Formats top spot this year. The original game debuted at No24 in the All Formats Chart back in 1998 and wasn’t even the highest selling PC game that week (Lucasarts’ Star Wars Supremacy was). In fact the sequel has sold more this week than the original’s entire UK lifetime sales (only boxed product is accounted for). With no other new entries this week we see Disney’s ‘Toy Story 3’ (-8%), Rockstar/Take2’s ‘Red Dead Redemption’ (-8%), Ubisoft’s ‘Dance on Broadway’ (-11%) and Warner Bros. Interactive’s ‘Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4’ (-10%) all slide down a place to No2, No3, No4 and No5 respectively. Ubisoft’s other dance title in this week’s chart, ‘Just Dance’ (+26%), is up two places to No6 followed by last week’s new entry ‘Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies’ (+27%) which is also up two places to No7. Activsion Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (+37%) again battles it’s way into the top ten at No8 and Nintendo’s ‘Super Mario Galaxy 2’ (-5%) is at No9. Rounding off the chart this week sees a return to the top 10 for another popular FPS, EA’s ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ (+33%). Dante Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 31, 2010 Disney’s ‘Toy Story 3’ resumes command of the top spot (-25%) having been held off last week by Activision Blizzard’s ‘Starcraft II’. A general renaissance of the PS3 version of ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ means that the Activision Blizzard multi-format title storms back up to No2 overall (+21%), a position it has not reached since week 3 this year. It also means that the title is poised to overtake ‘Dr Kawashima’ on DS as the UK biggest unit seller and this may even happen next week. Ubisoft’s Wii ‘Dance on Broadway’ moves up one place to No3 (-4%) and last week’s No1 is now No4, the aforementioned ‘Starcraft II’ (-72%). Rockstar / Take 2’s ‘Red Dead Redemption’ drops to a lowest ever position of No5 after 12 weeks on chart (-19%). There are 2 new entries this week. The first is Nintendo’s DS ‘Art Academy’ debuting at No28 and the second is GSP/Avanquest’s ‘Hidden Mysteries: Titanic’ at No32 (+64%) thanks to the launch last week of DS/Wii versions, of which the DS version is up 70% over last week, accounting for 80% of overall sales (PC version launched week 2 this year). Dante Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 K TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 32, 2010 ‘Toy Story 3’ keeps the dream alive for Disney as it holds on to top spot in the All Formats Entertainment Software Chart for another week. Sales are down 17%, but the popular film tie-in still claims a total of 3 weeks at No1, which is more than any other Disney published title has ever achieved. In fact, so far this year only ‘2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’, ‘Red Dead Redemption’ and ‘Just Dance’ have stayed longer at No1. We’re going to have to wait another week before Modern Warfare 2 (-41%) surpasses Brain Training as the biggest selling game ever in UK: Activision Blizzard’s hugely successful shooter plummets from No2 to No8, leaving it tantalisingly close to what would be an awesome achievement considering it was only released 40 weeks ago. ‘Red Dead Redemption’ (-9%) climbs 3 places to No2, moving ahead of ‘Dance On Broadway’ (-22%), which stages another week at No3. ‘Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4’ (-8%) also manages a healthy climb up the charts, moving 4 places from No8 to No4. Nintendo’s heavily advertised ‘Art Academy’ leaps to No5 thanks to a 205% jump in sales propelling it from its debut position of No28. EA’s ‘Madden NFL 11’ is this week’s only chart newcomer, entering at No10 – slightly below ‘Madden NFL 10’ which debuted at No8, but not bad considering it’s only on Xbox 360 and PS3, while NFL 10 was also released on Wii. Dante Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 33, 2010 Eidos/Square Enix get their teeth into No1 this week with ‘Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days’ on 360/PS3/PC claiming No1 at launch. The original ‘Kane & Lynch: Dead Men’ peaked at No14 in the second week on this chart (week 48, 2007). This is the third title this year to gain the top spot for Square Enix, having previously been No1 with ‘Final Fantasy XIII’ in week 10 and No1 with ‘Just Cause 2’ in week 12. Disney’s ‘Toy Story 3’ (-15%) only drops to No2 and Rockstar/Take 2 also drop one place to No3 with ‘Red Dead Redemption’ (-15%). Warner remains at No4 with ‘Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4’ (-10%) and Ubisoft rise one place to No5 with perennial favourite ‘Just Dance’ (-8%). Talking of perennial favourites this is the week that Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ finally overtakes Nintendo’s DS ‘Dr Kawashima’ as the biggest selling UK title ever (units) and achieves this feat in just 41 weeks (around 10 months), of which only 3 weeks were outside the Entertainment Software Top 10. It took ‘Dr Kawashima’ around 36 months to overtake the previous record holder, Rockstar/Take 2’s ‘Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’ (PS2, Xbox and PC). Dante Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 34, 2010 ‘Mafia II’ from 2K Games/Take 2 grabs the top spot in the Entertainment Software Charts from Square’s ‘Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days’ (+33%) with the biggest UK game launch since Take 2’s very own ‘Red Dead Redemption’ 14 weeks ago. The Xbox 360 version is the Don, taking 52% of all Mafia II sales, while PS3 hits 41% and the PC version 7%. ‘Mafia’ was originally launched as a PC game 8 years ago, with PS2 and Xbox versions following in early 2004. Square’s ‘Kane & Lynch 2’ drops to No2 despite an impressive rise of 33% in sales in its second week. Previous All Formats No1s ‘Toy Story 3’ (-11%) and ‘Red Dead Redemption’ (+0%) both make way, falling one place to No’s 3 and 4 respectively. Wii console hardware selling at £129.99 helps boost the bundled ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (+91%) from No16 to No5. Dante Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 38, 2010 Debuting on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC Codemasters’ ‘F1 2010’ pops open the champagne at the top of the podium, outselling No2 (Halo: Reach) and No3 (Dead Rising 2) combined. It is the first Formula One game to reach No1 since Sony’s ‘Formula One 2001’ over nine years ago, with this iteration selling more than ten times the 2001 game. With an 80% dip in sales Microsoft’s ‘Halo: Reach’ slips down to No2 and after a four year wait Capcom’s zombie sequel ‘Dead Rising 2’ makes its debut at No3. After an even longer wait of almost five years Sid Meier’s PC strategy franchise returns with ‘Civilization V’ from 2K Games at No4. This means that Sony’s Move title ‘Sports Champions’ (-12%) has been forced down to No5 followed by Activision Blizzard’s sixth Guitar Hero game ‘Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock’ starting out at No6. Ubisoft’s ‘Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands’ (+26%) slips down to No7 and 2K Games’ ‘Mafia II’ (-33%) has dropped by 5 places to No8. Disney’s ‘Toy Story 3’ (-4%) has also dropped 5 places to No9 and another long-standing franchise rounds off the Top 10 with Square Enix’s online-only ‘Final Fantasy XIV’ in at No10. Dante Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 39, 2010 Not since 2004 (FIFA 05 in wk41 vs. PES4 in wk42) have the 2 big football titles been just 1 week apart. And whilst we are on memory lane, 2003 was the last time PES debuted before FIFA (also one week apart). This week is of course dominated by ‘FIFA 11’ which was up against last year’s iteration ‘FIFA 10’, the biggest FIFA title ever launched and the third biggest All Format title ever launched in the UK (behind ‘Modern Warfare 2’ and ‘GTA IV’). ‘FIFA 11’ comfortably takes the third place from ‘FIFA 10’ with overall units up 21% / overall revenue up 36% on ‘FIFA 10’ week 1. Xbox 360 remains the lead format (+26% units over last year) and PS3 is close behind (+23% over last year). The 2 lead formats accounted for 96% of the 6 formats (DS debuts next week) compared to 94% last year. In terms of individual SKU week 1 unit/revenue sales ‘FIFA 11’ 360 is No8 and the PS3 version is No9. Finally, in terms of all 360/PS3 software units sold in week 39 ‘FIFA 11’ accounted for a massive 63%. The rest of the All Formats Top 40 shows no other new releases and Codemasters drop to No2 with ‘F1 2010’ (-46%). EA’s ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11’ climbs to a third best chart position since launch at No6 (+71%) and Sony’s ‘Sports Champions’ drops 2 places to No7 and remains the best-selling Move-enabled title for a third week in a row (-35%). Dante Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 40, 2010 EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ proves to be in a league of its own, retaining the top spot quite comfortably against rival Pro Evolution Soccer, despite a 63% drop in sales. FIFA 11's launch week amounts to 10 times that of Pro Evolution Soccer 2011. Konami’s ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2011’ kicks off in second place, which is the first time a Pro Evolution Soccer title hasn’t debuted at No1 since the original game back in 2001 (it came second in Week 47, losing out to Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone). Capcom’s Zombie title ‘Dead Rising 2’ (-34%) proves it has a firm grip, retaining No3 for the third week in a row, ahead of Codemasters’ ‘F1 2010’ (-64%) which slips down to No4. Microsoft’s flagship FPS ‘Halo: Reach’ (-43%) drops down to No5, followed by two new entries: Konami’s Castlevania franchise resurrected for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in ‘Castlevania: Lords of Shadow’ and Namco Bandai Games’ ‘Enslaved: Odyssey to the West’ (a game very loosely based on the Monkey TV series) in at No6 and No7 respectively. EA’s ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11’ (+6%) gets a double bogey and moves down from No6 to No8, while Ubisoft’s chart sensation ‘Just Dance’ (+32%) is back in the Top 10 at No9 (the sequel is out next week). Nintendo’s latest in the Wii series ‘Wii Party’ debuts at No10, but just missing out on the Top 10 is Black Bean/Tradewest’s ‘WRC: FIA World Rally Championship’ new at No11. The final new entry this week is for 2K Sports / Take 2’s ‘NBA 2K11’ slamming in at No19.
