UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 41, 2009

EA’s ‘FIFA 10’ is top of the table for a second week despite a 64% drop in sales. Debuting at No2 is Codemasters’ self-developed tactical shooter ‘Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising’, which is now the publisher’s biggest selling launch title.

‘Need for Speed: Shift’ applies the gas to move back to No3, overtaking Nintendo’s ‘Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box’ which finds itself at No4. Nintendo also hold No5 with non-mover ‘Wii Sports Resort’, ahead of Microsoft’s ‘Halo 3: ODST’ at No6. Sony’s PSP racer ‘Gran Turismo’ moves 5 places up the grid from No12 to No7 and Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit’ is at No8. Nintendo’s fourth entry in the Top 10 is ‘Mario Kart Wii’ at No9 and Activision Blizzard’s ‘Guitar Hero 5’ is at No10. Warner Bros. Interactive’s emergent puzzler ‘Scribblenauts’ (from 5th Cell, the developers of ‘Drawn to Life’) is a new entry at No12. Lucasarts’ ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Republic Heroes’ debuts at No15 and Square Enix’s ‘Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days’ is at No17 - the first title in the series to be released on DS.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 42, 2009

This week there are 4 big new releases and they are all to be found within the Top 10 of the Entertainment Software Top 40. EA’s ‘FIFA 10’ remains on top for a third week despite another severe drop in sales of –54%. However, with week 1 sales being so high the title has now sailed comfortably through the 1m units mark in 3 weeks (Chart-Track total UK market estimates) – a full 3 weeks before ‘FIFA 09’.

Sony’s PS3 exclusive ‘Uncharted 2: Among Thieves’ garnered rave reviews and debuts at No2 on this chart and of course is comfortably No1 on the PS3 Full Price Chart. The title was developed by long-standing Playstation coding house Naughty Dog, of Crash Bandicoot fame. ‘Uncharted 2’ is the sequel to 2007’s ‘Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune’ on PS3 which peaked at No22 on the All Formats Top 40 and got to No1 on the PS3 chart in its second week of release (week 50, 2007). Codemasters’ ‘Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising’ drops from No3 to No2 (-51%) and Nintendo’s ‘Wii Sports Resort’ climbs one place to No4 (+17%). The three other new releases this week are: at No5 Sega’s ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games’ (Wii/DS), at No7 EA’s ‘Brütal Legend’ (360/PS3) and at No10 Bethesda’s ‘Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition’, which includes all 5 download packs (PS3/360/PC). The first 4 download packs were released this year at retail on 360 and PC, but not on PS3, which helps explain why the PS3 version is the lead format with 56% of sales.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 43, 2009

New All Formats No1 ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2010’ kicks ‘FIFA 10’ off the top spot and a new All Formats No2 (‘Forza Motorsport 3’, Microsoft Xbox360 only) means FIFA is down to No3 this week.

Last year ‘FIFA 10’ scored 2 weeks at No1 before conceding to PES - this year EA’s popular football franchise remained unbeaten for 3 weeks. Konami’s ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2010’ doesn’t manage to match the launch of its predecessor, selling 39% less in its first week across the same formats (PS3/XB360 and PC), however it does top the PS3 Full Price Chart. In fact, PS3 appears to be more and more the format of choice for PES with 66% selling on PS3, 32% on XB360 and 2% on PC (compared to 57% PS3, 40% XB360 and 3% PC in launch week last year). Blocking PES’ shot at the top of the Xbox 360 Chart is Microsoft’s ‘Forza Motorsport 3’, topping the Xbox 360 chart and as previously mentioned, debuts at No2 in the All Formats Chart ahead of ‘FIFA 10’. Sega climb one place to No4 with ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games’, positioning it ahead of 6 format newcomer ‘WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2010’ at No5.

The critically acclaimed PS3 ‘Uncharted 2: Among Thieves’ is robbed of 4 places as it slides from No2 to No6 (-53%), while 2K Games/Take 2 claim the 4th Top 10 new entry this week with ‘Borderlands’ at No7. The large number of Top 10 new entries means Nintendo find themselves down 4 places to No8 despite sales of ‘Wii Sports Resort’ rising by 3%. EA are the only publisher to have at least 2 games in the Top 10 thanks to ‘Need for Speed: Shift’ (-19%) only dropping 3 places to No9. Codemasters complete the Top 10 with ‘Operation Flashpoint: Dragon’s Rising (-60%) down from No3 to No10. Sony’s ‘EyePet’ doesn’t manage to crash the Top 10 new-entry party, debuting at No18, while bundling boosts ‘Lego Batman’ (+123%) up to No19 and ‘Pure’ (+563%) back into the Top 40 at No29.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 44, 2009

Sega’s latest edition to their football franchise ‘Football Manager 2010’ manages to hold off Nintendo’s fitness sequel ‘Wii Fit Plus’, in at No2, to claim the top spot this week.

Proving that football in the UK is just as popular in pixel form, three of the top five games are football related, the second being EA’s FIFA 10 (+3%) which keeps its position at No3 while Microsoft’s ‘Forza Motorsport 3’ (-29%) moves down the grid to No4. The third football game, Konami’s ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2010’ (-54%), has been relegated from No1 to No5, followed at No6 by Take 2 with new entry ‘Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City’. Sega have a second title in the Top 10 with ‘Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games’ (-34%) at No7, and Namco Bandai’s new addition to their fighting franchise ‘Tekken 6’ punches in at No8. Take 2 and 2K Games’ ‘Borderlands’ (-10%) moves down to No9 and Nintendo’s ‘Wii Sports Resort’ rounds off the Top 10 at No10. The only other new release in the Top 40 is Activision Blizzard’s new IP ‘DJ Hero’ which charts at No20.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 45, 2009

The biggest release week of the year in terms of individual products and SKU’s sees 41 different games/franchises added to Chart-Track’s database – overall this is almost 80 SKU’s, ranging from single format PC titles to products like ‘Band Hero’ - available as 9 different versions.

Sega’s ‘Football Manager 2010’ (-53%) drops from No1 to No4 and last week’s 2 & 3 simply move up to No’s 1 & 2: Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (+3%) is now No1 and enjoys a storming second week with EA’s ‘FIFA 10’ comfortably nestled at No2 (-13%). Nintendo’s ‘Wii Sports Resort’ climbs 7 places to No3 (+63%), fuelled by the best Wii hardware sales so far this year, including a 57% increase in the White Wii Sports Resort Pack (launched 6 weeks ago) and a strong debut this week for the Black Wii Sports Resort Pack. The highest new entry is EA’s ‘Dragon Age: Origins’ on 360/PC at No5. Konami’s ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2010’ receives the PS2/PSP versions this week but overall sales are down 42% and the title drops from No5 to No9. Next on the new-release radar is Sony’s ‘Singstar Take That’ debuting at No16 for PS3/PS2 and Sony also debut at No22 with PS3 ‘Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time’.

The final new-entry is actually a re-entry as Atari launch 4 formats (XB360, Wii, DS and PC) of ‘Ghostbusters: The Videogame’ – now over 7 formats (including the PSP version, new this week from Sony joining the original PS2/PS3 versions which debuted 20 weeks ago, also published by Sony).

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 46, 2009

‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (XB360, PS3, PC, DS) explodes into the All Formats Chart with by far the biggest ever launch of any game, recording a staggering 1.78m units in the UK over 5 days and generating £67.4m.

To put this in context, Activision’s title has now grossed almost twice as much as the entire entertainment software market last week. The Xbox 360 version alone has sold over 1m units in its first week, making £38.5m (which on its own is more than last week’s total entertainment software market figure). ‘Modern Warfare 2’ has smashed GTA IV’s launch week record of 927,000 units (£39.9m) by a huge margin. No other game is anywhere near competing with Modern Warfare 2 this week, as Nintendo’s ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (+45%) climbs from No3 to No2 and last week’s No1, ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-24%) falls to No4. ‘FIFA 10’ (0%) is at No3 while Microsoft’s ‘Forza Motorsport 3’ (+22%) occupies the No5 position.

‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games’ (+9%) is up one place to No6 while ‘Lego Batman’ (+107%) and ‘Pure’ (+143%) have re-entered the Top 10 at No’s 7 and 9 respectively, on the back of an on-going Xbox 360 hardware bundle. Nintendo now have 3 games in the Top 10 thanks to competitive pricing on ‘Mario Kart Wii’ (+53%), while ‘Grand Theft Auto Episodes from Liberty City’ is the Top 10’s biggest casualty, falling from No8 to No10 with a 28% decline in sales. ‘Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare’ is back in the Top 40 at No19 boosted by the launch of a Wii version of the game to coincide with the sequel.

Call of Duty Wii didn't too badly considering no one knew anything about the game...

I imagine it'll have legs too. Will probably end up matching WaW in terms of sales. It'll have an advantage over it in terms of reviews and it being an already-established hit on other consoles, but one also needs to bear in mind that it's been released at the same time as the gargantuan Modern Warfare 2. Not that I think MW2 will eat into MW:Wii's consumer audience too much, just that it's going to be dominating the general word-of-mouth for the next few months.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 49, 2009

Sales of ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ are down 7%, but the record-breaking title from Activision Blizzard manages to stick to its guns at the top of the All Formats Chart for a 4th consecutive week, despite another strong surge from ‘FIFA 10’ (+24%) which dribbles past ‘Assassin’s Creed II’, climbing 2 places to No2.

Last year ‘Call of Duty: World at War’ managed 5 weeks at No1 before being overtaken by ‘FIFA 09’ for the coveted Christmas No1 spot. Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed II’ and Nintendo’s ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ both fall one place to No’s 3 and 4. Nintendo however are nicely positioned at No’s 5 and 6 with ‘Wii Sports Resort’ and ‘Wii Fit Plus’ enjoying strong sales jumps of 30% and 21% respectively.

Xmas No1 contender ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games’ (+28%) is a non-mover at No7 ahead of ‘Lego Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues’ which gatecrashes the Top 10, up from No12 to No8 with an impressive 74% sales spike. Two very different racing titles round off the Top 10 with ‘Forza Motorsport 3’ (+27%) a non-mover at No9 and ‘Mario Kart Wii’ (+24%) up one place to No10. Retailer promotions of ‘Batman: Arkham Asylum’ (+122%) helps it back into the All Formats Top 40 at No20. The Wii version of ‘Peppa Pig: The Game’ (+384%) helps launch it back into the Top 40 at No21, while another Ubisoft title – ‘Just Dance’ (+290%), struts its stuff in its second week of release, entering the Top 40 for the first time at No30. The only brand new game to make the Top 40 is EA’s ‘The Saboteur’ at No39.

Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (-11%) battles on to reign supreme with its 5th week at No1, despite a drop of 11% in sales. Can it hold on for a sixth week to claim Christmas No1, to echo the original Modern Warfare two years ago?

Nintendo’s ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (+17%) enjoys a Christmas resurgence moving up to No2, followed by ‘Assassin’s Creed II’ clinging on to No3 (-3%). Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (+11%) also steps up the chart to No4, whilst ‘FIFA 10’ (-15%) is relegated three places to No5. Mario finds himself at No6 and No7 with Nintendo’s ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ (-5%) ahead of Sega’s ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games’ (+15%). Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ (+274%) pulls off an amazing move to go from No30 to No8 and Microsoft’s ‘Forza Motorsport 3’ (+15%) continues to cruise at No9. Rounding off the Top Ten is another Mario title, ‘Mario Kart Wii’ at No10 (+18%).

Link returns to the DS with Nintendo’s ‘The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks’ making its debut at No12 and Ubisoft’s ‘James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game’ (+108%) enters the chart at No29 as the release of the highly anticipated film draws near.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 51, 2009

As with 2007 and 2008, week 51 is the final published chart before Christmas and this is therefore the Official Christmas Chart of 2009. So, in the final analysis, Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ remained No1 on the All Formats Chart for 6 straight weeks since tearing up all the records in week 46, all the way up to claiming the Christmas Chart No1 (+3%).

The anticipated surge on EA’s ‘FIFA 10’ brought the title up 3 places but not enough to dislodge the aforementioned Activision title, settling at No2 (+24%). However, EA can take comfort in the fact that an EA title has held the Christmas No1 11 times over the 25 years that we have been tracking videogame Christmas No1’s. For those with any interest in this ranking, the No2 behind EA in terms of Xmas No1’s? Ocean (3 times, 1988, 1989, 1991). Bringing us back to the present, Nintendo take 4 out of the Top 10 with Wii titles, 2 of which follow directly after ‘FIFA 10’ - ‘Wii Fit Plus’ at No3 (+9%) and ‘Wii Sports Resort’ at No4 (+0%) were both strong Christmas purchases.

Ubisoft are down 2 places to No5 with ‘Assassin’s Creed II’ (-5%), Sega are up one place to No6 with ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games’ (+13%), Nintendo’s ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ is No7 (-1%), Microsoft’s ‘Forza Motorsport 3’ is No8 (+11%) and Nintendo’s ‘Mario Kart Wii’ is No9 (+12%). Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ continues to delight Wii customers with an interest in perfecting their moves, all at an impulse price point – the title drops 2 positions but rounds off the Christmas Top 10 (-18%). Also of note this week is Ubisoft’s ‘James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game’ which is benefitting from an overload of advertising at present, both for the film and the game, plus the 360/PS3 versions this week saw around £10 off – the title rockets from No29 to No12 as the highest climber (+129%).

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 52, 2009

‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (+17%) looks like it could well see out the year unbeaten at the top of the All Formats Chart as it holds on to top spot for a 7th consecutive week with one week left until 2009 comes to a close.

However, closest rival ‘FIFA 10’ (+18%) is only 2,000 units behind, a non-mover at No2 and has been closing the gap over the past two weeks. As is usual after Christmas, there are no significant new releases with the Top 10 games jockeying for position amongst themselves. ‘Assassin’s Creed II’ (+5%) moves up 2 places, back to No3, while Nintendo’s big 3 of ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-6%) a non-mover at No4, ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-13%) down 3 places to No6 and ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ (-9%) a non-mover at No7, all take slight dips in sales.

A jump of one place up to No5 for Sega’s ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games’ (+5%) and a strong week for ‘Mario Kart Wii’ (+21%), holding on to No9, means 3 Mario games have managed to stay in the Top 10 over the past 4 weeks. Ubisoft now have 2 Top 10 titles as ‘James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game’ (+41%) breaks into the Top 10 for the first time, up from No12 to No8. Microsoft’s highest charting game is ‘Forza Motorsport 3’ (+2%) which manages a Top 10 finish, down from No8 to No10. This week’s highest climber is EA’s ‘The Beatles: Rock Band’ (+50%), “getting better” thanks to price promotions, back in the Top 40 at No26.

EA’s ‘FIFA 10’ (-61%) slips down the table to No6 followed by Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ (+10%) claiming it’s highest position at No7. It’s a Mario double with ‘New Super Mario Bros. UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 01, 2010

The first week of 2010 shows no change at the top with Activision Blizzard taking a 9th consecutive week at No1 with ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (-41%).

The title is currently the 3rd biggest game ever in terms of UK history unit sell-through – it actually managed this feat last week, so after just 8 weeks on sale. For the record the current No1 is Nintendo’s ‘Dr Kawashima’ on DS, released in June 2006 and No2 is Rockstar/Take 2’s ‘GTA San Andreas’, initially released on PS2 in November 2004 (Xbox and PC in 2005). Back to the present and Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit Plus’ climbs 3 places to No2 (-43%), Ubisoft’s Wii ‘Just Dance’ climbs 4 places to a best-ever position at No3 (-41%) and Nintendo remain at No4 with ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-54%). There are only 2 new entries this week and both make the Top 10, starting with Sega’s ‘Bayonetta’ (360/PS3) at No5. The other is THQ’s ‘Darksiders’ (360/PS3) debuting at No8.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 02, 2010

In an impressive move Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ is the unlikely title to knock Call of Duty off the top spot (ending the impressive 9 week run) thanks to a huge 114% increase in sales. After debuting at No100 in the All Formats Chart 7 weeks ago it has been an unexpected hit and steadily risen to the top.

‘Just Dance’ is Ubisoft’s first No1 since ‘Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2’, which was back in March 2008. Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (+0%) also outsells ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (-17%) this week, retaining No2, while the colossal-selling shooter has to settle for No3. EA’s two player co-op sequel ‘Army of Two: The 40th Day’ makes it’s debut at No4 which means that Nintendo’s ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-23%) slips one place to No5. THQ’s ‘Darksiders’ (-23%) moves up two places to No6 and Sega’s ‘Bayonetta’ (-41%) is down to No7. EA’s ‘FIFA 10’ (-34%) is at No8 and then Ubisoft holds No9 and No10 with ‘James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game’ (-17%) and ‘Assassin’s Creed II’ (-35%).

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 03, 2010

Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ (-33%) continues to strut its stuff at the top of the All Formats Chart for a second week, well ahead of ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (-10%) which just manages to sneak past ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-17%) to claim No2.

It is the first Ubisoft title since the original ‘Assassin’s Creed’ to hold on to the top spot for more than one week. Last week ‘Just Dance’ recorded the highest ever sales for a game in the 2nd week of the year and this week the only game to sell better in week 3 is ‘World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade’ back in week 3 2007. It is traditionally a quiet time of year for both sales and new releases and 2010 is no exception as the top sellers all jostle for position amongst themselves. The Top 10 is made up of games from only 3 different publishers this week with Nintendo still well represented with 4 titles.

‘Wii Fit Plus’ may have dropped one place to No3, but ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-12%) holds on to No5, while both ‘New Super Mario Bros.’ (-12%) and Mario Kart Wii’ (-12%) jump back into the Top 10, up 4 places to No7 and 2 places to No10 respectively. Ubisoft have two other Top 10 games with ‘James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game’ (-23%) up one place to No8 and ‘Assassin’s Creed II’ (-20%), also up one place, to No9. EA are this week’s only other Top 10 publisher as their new release from last week ‘Army of Two: The 40th Day’ (-16%) holds on to No4 - in contrast to last week’s other major new game ‘Darksiders’ (-48%) from THQ which drops out of the Top 10, down from No6 to No11. No Top 40 title manages to gain sales this week, however there is one newcomer, ‘Dark Void’ from Capcom at No33.
