TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - INDIVIDUAL FORMATS (UNITS) - Week 18, 2008

The biggest All Formats No1 ever ‘Grand Theft Auto IV’ from Rockstar/Take 2 puts a stop to Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit’ workout, replacing it at the top and outselling it by over 9 to 1.

Released across Xbox 360 and PS3, GTA IV almost breaks the 1m unit barrier in under a week, recording an estimated total market figure of 926,000 (£39.9m) over 5 days. 61.2% of the value of all software sold this week was for GTA IV, which itself is bigger than the total software market figure of every other week so far this year (apart from week 1). After releasing a revised estimated day 1 figure of 609,000 for GTA IV, Chart-Track can now reveal that the actual estimated total market figure based on full EpoS data from all retailers comes to 631,000 units. In under a week GTA IV has sold more units than every other title in 2007, except ‘FIFA 08’, ‘Brain Training’ and ‘Call of Duty 4’.

In the face of low stock, sales of ‘Wii Fit’ are down 58%, dropping from No1 to No2, while sales of Sega’s ‘Mario & Sonic’ remain stable, holding at No3. Nintendo does not have ‘Wii Play’ stock issues this week as the remote-bundled title shoots back into the All Formats Top 10, up from No15 to No4. The wheels have come off ‘Mario Kart’ as it drops from No2 to No5 (-61%), ahead of ‘Gran Turismo 5: Prologue’ which falls 2 places to No6 (-2%). Sega are the only company to release an All Formats Top 40 game in GTA IV week with super hero film tie-in ‘Iron Man: The Official Videogame’ new at No11.

TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - INDIVIDUAL FORMATS (UNITS) - Week 19, 2008

‘GTA IV’ retains top spot in the All Formats Chart for a second week despite a massive 77% drop in sales. The record breaking Take 2/Rockstar title still outsells ‘Wii Fit’ at No2 by 4 to 1 this week, while the Xbox 360 version widens its sales advantage over the PS3 version by accounting for 62% of sales this week compared to 55% last week.

‘Wii Fit’ sales slip by 48%, but holds on to No2, while ‘Wii Play’ swaps places with ‘Mario & Sonic’, up from No4 to No3. Over the last 2 weeks the sales difference between ‘Wii Play’ and ‘Mario & Sonic’ has only been a matter of a few hundred units. Nintendo remains the most well represented All Formats Top 10 publisher with 4 games, while Sega now has 2 thanks to a strong 2nd week for ‘Iron Man: The Official Videogame’ up from No11 to No5. The remaining All Formats Top 10 titles all shuffle places with ‘Mario Kart Wii’ putting on the breaks, down from No5 to No9. Every remaining game in the All Formats Top 40 loses sales this week except ‘Carnival: Funfair Games’ from Take 2 with sales up 25%, climbing from No37 to No22. There are no new releases in the All Formats Top 40 and no changes at the top of each of the individual format charts.

It’s a third week of ‘GTA IV’ at No1 and ‘Wii Fit’ at No2 with the record breaking Rockstar/Take 2 game retaining top spot in the All Formats Chart despite a 41% drop in sales, while Nintendo’s fitness game sheds 52% of sales.

In the All Formats Top 20 sales of ‘GTA IV’ and ‘Wii Fit’ fall by the greatest margin. This weeks highest climber is ‘Mario Kart Wii’ up from No9 to No3, renewed stock of the in-demand title giving Nintendo 3 games in the All Formats Top 5 - ‘Wii Play’ down from No3 to No5. In fact Nintendo formats dominate the All Formats Top 40 with 20 format exclusives, while 28 games from the Top 40 are selling best on Nintendo formats. Sega still have 2 games in the All Formats Top 10 as ‘Mario & Sonic’ holds on to No4 and ‘Iron Man: The Official Videogame’ drops from No5 to No7. Konami’s ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2008’ gets budget versions this week, helping it up one place from No7 to No6.

There are first appearances in the All Formats Top 40 for three games released 2 weeks ago – Disney’s ‘High School Musical 2: Work This Out!’ on DS - the highest at No14, the EA/Steven Spielberg designed ‘Boom Blox’ on Wii at No21 and film tie-in on DS/Wii ‘Speed Racer’ from Warner Bros at No37. The only All Formats Top 40 new entry this week is ‘Top Trumps: Doctor Who’ from Eidos at No22.

UK sales from here.

Take 2/Rockstar’s ‘GTA IV’ remains in the driving seat for a fourth consecutive week' date=' leading the All Formats Chart ahead of 3 All Formats Top 10 newcomers from 3 different publishers.

The highest new entry is MMORPG ‘Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures’ from Eidos at No2, registering the biggest launch for a PC title so far this year as well as the biggest ever launch for an online-only title outside of the ‘World of Warcraft’ franchise.

Ubisoft score a new entry at No3 with ‘Haze’ on PS3, while EA’s ‘Rock Band’ on Xbox 360 debuts at No6. [b']Three-quarters of all people who purchased the stand-alone ‘Rock Band’ game (RRP £49.99) also purchased the £129.99 priced instrument controller bundle.[/b] There are now 8 different publishers represented in the All Formats Top 10. Nintendo can only claim 2 Top 10 titles this week (‘Wii Play’ a non-mover at No5 and ‘Mario Kart Wii’ down from No3 to No8) as stock problems mean ‘Wii Fit’ slips out of the All Formats Top 40, down from last week’s No2.

Despite sales slowing by 22%, Take 2/Rockstar’s ‘GTA IV’ holds on to pole position for a 5th consecutive week ahead of ‘Race Driver: GRID’ from Codemasters which lines up on the All Formats Chart at No2.

The latest game in the TOCA series also debuts at No2 in the Xbox 360 chart behind ‘GTA IV’, but has to settle for No3 in the PS3 chart behind ‘GTA IV’ at No1 and ‘Haze’ at No2. All Formats Top 10 regulars ‘Mario & Sonic’ and ‘Wii Play’ increase sales by 66% and 40% respectively – each rising one place, up to No’s 3 and 4. Euro 2008 kicks off next week and both ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2008’ and ‘FIFA 08’ climb the All Formats Top 10 in anticipation – PES08 up 2 places to No5 and FIFA up 1 place to No8. Sales of EA’s official offering also rise, with ‘UEFA Euro 2008’ up from No20 to No17. A strong retailer promotion reignites the career of ‘Sega Superstars Tennis’, serving up an All Formats Top 10 re-entry, up from No15 to No7. On the back of half-term, every game in the All Formats Top 10 gains sales except ‘GTA IV’ and Ubisoft’s PS3-exclusive ‘Haze’, down from No3 to No6 and ‘Mario Kart Wii’, which slips 2 places to No10.

In its second week of release EA’s ‘Rock Band’ is outplayed by Activision’s ‘Guitar Hero III’ with sales down 39%, dropping out of the Top 10, down from No6 to No12, while Activision’s 6 month old title rocks steady, down one place to No11. Activision have a Top 40 re-entry as ‘Quake Wars: Enemy Territory’ shoots back in at No15, boosted by new Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. After an impressive launch week, sales of ‘Age of Conan’ are down 69%, falling from the lofty heights of No2 to No16, while continued stock problems mean ‘Wii Fit’ remains outside the All Formats Top 40 – and even drops out of the Top 40 Wii Chart.

LucasArts put the skids on GTA IV’s 5-week run at the top of the All Formats Chart with the multi-format ‘Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures’ outselling it this week by almost 3 to 1.

Released 2 weeks after the new Indiana Jones film, and on the back of a successful run of Lego-themed Star Wars titles, LucasArts claims top spot for the first time since ‘Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy’ back in W38 2006. Sales are split relatively evenly across the formats with the Wii version the most successful, while the PS2 version outsells the PS3 version (Wii 27%, Xbox 360 22%, PS2 20%, PS3 17%, DS 13%, PC 2%). All versions (except PC) top their respective charts with GTA IV down to No2 on Xbox 360 and PS3. GTA IV only just manages to grab No2 in the All Formats Chart after a 44% drop in sales, pressured by Codemasters’ ‘Race Driver: GRID’ which has to settle for a drop of one place to No3 (3,000 sales separating it from GTA IV). Microsoft claim No6 in the All Formats Chart with ‘Ninja Gaiden II’ (No3 in the Xbox 360 Chart), while a new entry from Namco Bandai/Atari – ‘Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit’ at No11 and a new Wii party game ‘Sports Island’ from Konami at No14 just fail to break into the All Formats Top 10. Renewed stock of ‘Link’s Crossbow Training’ sees it re-enter at No24, while the release of the PC version of ‘Mass Effect’ pushes it back into the All Formats Chart at No26, with a No2 debut on the PC chart.

‘Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots’ flies the flag for Konami at the top of the All Formats Chart, becoming the 2nd fastest-selling PS3 game in the UK (behind ‘GTA IV’ but 2,000 units ahead of ‘GT5: Prologue’).

Released on Thursday only on Sony’s next-gen format, MGS4 denies ‘Lego Indiana Jones’ a second week at No1 despite sales of the multi-format LucasArts game falling by only 9%, bolstered by strong sales of the DS version and the release of a new PSP version. MGS4 beats MGS3 by 24,000 units, but falls 14,000 units short of overturning the launch week sales of the now legendary MGS2. Rockstar/Take 2’s ‘GTA IV’ slips another place, down to No3, while ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games’ shows no signs of running out of puff – a non-mover at No4. Nintendo believe it’s not just Mums that need their brains trained as the Father’s Day Dr. Kawashima DS Lite hardware bundle helps boost the ever-popular DS title back into the All Formats Top 10, up from No12 to No5.

Two years old last week, Brain Training has now spent 74 weeks in the All Formats Top 10 (5 weeks more and it will equal the current record holder, ‘Tomb Raider’ with 79 weeks). ‘PES 2008’ may have dropped from No8 to No11, but Wii-exclusive ‘Sports Island’ gives the MGS publisher another All Formats Top 10 title this week, jumping from No14 to No8. Other than MGS4 the only other All Formats Top 10 new entry is ‘Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution’ from Take 2 at No9 – the first Civilization title to appear on a console, out on Xbox 360 and PS3. After 2 weeks in the All Formats wilderness, ‘Wii Fit’ returns to the Top 40, re-entering at No10 thanks to renewed stock. The only other All Formats Top 40 new entry this week is also from Take 2 – ‘Don King Presents: Prizefighter’ at No25

Despite going straight in at number one in the software charts and being the biggest PlayStation 3-exclusive release so far, Metal Gear Solid 4 has failed to prove a major driver of hardware in the UK, with Chart-Track revealing a "minimal" spike of seven percent over its opening weekend.

The UK sales monitor revealed last night that Konami's hugely anticipated blockbuster, which released worldwide last Thursday (June 12), has become the second fastest-selling PS3 title in the UK after Grand Theft Auto IV, and 14,000 short of the opening weekend figure recorded by Metal Gear Solid 2 on PS2 in 2002.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Chart-Track director Dorian Bloch played down the game's impact on hardware, revealing: "There's not a lot to say about it – it had minimal impact really. Units were up by seven percent."

But it was a different story for Nintendo, which launched three new flavours of DS - red, turqoise and green - across Europe last Friday (June 13).

"The new colours had a massive impact – sales were up hugely," said Bloch, who also broke down the performance of each model, adding: "Black is still the king, followed by red, pink, white, turqoise, green and silver." Black accounted for "more than a third" of DS sales. Chart-Track does not publish specific hardware sales figures.

In addition to the new colours, Nintendo also launched a new DS bundle featuring Brain Training, specifically targetting Father's Day gift buyers.

"Father's Day had quite a big impact on DS because there was a specific Father's Day pack available - which Nintendo also did for Mother's Day - which was quite important," Bloch noted. "DS is still going some, basically."

The UK sales monitor further revealed that Brain Training has spent a massive 74 weeks in the all formats top 10 – just five weeks short of current record holder, the original Tomb Raider.

After a close fought encounter with ‘Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots’ last week, ‘Lego Indiana Jones’ retakes No1 in the All Formats Chart from Konami’s PS3 stealth-em-up.

It’s a case of which game falls by the greatest margin as sales of the LucasArts’ film/toy franchise drop 29% compared to MGS4 which falls by 59%. MGS4 shifts down one place to No2, ahead of Atari’s ‘Alone in the Dark’, reborn on Xbox 360, Wii, PC and PS2 after a seven year absence - debuting at No3 with under half the sales of MGS4 this week. ‘GTA IV’ continues to fall by one place, down from No3 to No4, while ‘Wii Play’ gains 2 places, up from No7 to No5. ‘Mario & Sonic’, ‘Brain Training’ and ‘Race Driver GRID’ all drop 2 places to No’s 6, 7 and 8 respectively, while Activision’s ‘Guitar Hero III’ hits all the right notes, back into the All Formats Top 10, up from No13 to No9 - boosted by a retailer promotion of the PS3 version. Having debuted at No2 in the Japanese Charts in September last year ‘Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII’ enters the UK All Formats Chart at No10. Released only on PSP, the Square-Enix published RPG accounts for 54% of all Full Price PSP games sold this week.

There are 2 more new entries that make the All Formats Top 40 – Take 2’s ‘Top Spin 3’, in time for Wimbledon at No12 and Nintendo’s Chef Training (not Brain Training) lifestyle title ‘Cooking Guide: Can’t Decide what to Eat’ at No19.

Nintendo and EA knock ‘Lego Indiana Jones’ down to No3 as ‘Super Smash Bros: Brawl’ on Wii celebrates an All Formats No1 debut ahead of competition from EA’s new recruit ‘Battlefield: Bad Company’ on Xbox 360/PS3 at No2.

It is Nintendo’s 4th All Formats No1 so far this year with ‘Super Smash Bros. Brawl’ becoming the 3rd largest UK Wii launch behind ‘Wii Fit’ and ‘Mario Kart Wii’. It’s also a bumper week for Nintendo’s console thanks to renewed stock of ‘Wii Fit’ pushing it up from No27 to No4 (sales up 643%) as well as Wii-exclusive ‘Big Beach Sports’ from THQ entering at No5 ahead of ‘Mario Kart Wii’, bouncing back into the Top 10, up from No11 to No7. There are now 4 Wii-exclusive games in the All Formats Top 10 with PS3 ‘Metal Gear Sold 4’ the only other format-exclusive All Formats Top 10 title, down from No2 to No6. ‘GTA IV’ almost drops out of the All Formats Top 10, down from No4 to No10, but Take 2 can claim two Top 10 games this week thanks to ‘Top Spin 3’ for Wii, PS3 & 360 rising up the rankings from No12 to No8 in its second week of launch.

One Sega Olympics game replaces another in the All Formats Top 10 as ‘Beijing 2008’ debuts at No9 for 360 & PS3 and ‘Mario and Sonic at the Olympics’ drops out of the Top 10, down from No6 to No11. There are 2 other newcomers that make this week’s All Formats Top 20 – ‘Guitar Hero: Aerosmith’ at No14 from Activision and ‘The Bourne Conspiracy’ for 360 & PS3 from Vivendi at No15.

It’s a return to No1 for Lucasarts’ ‘Lego Indiana Jones’ after a 4 week break, although the title has yet to drop out of the Top 3 since launch 7 weeks ago.THQ’s ‘Wall-E’ benefits from the cinematic release, climbing 14 places to No2, nestling just 46 sales behind the No1. Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit’ drops from No1 to No3, followed by a tranche of Nintendo Wii titles – ‘Wii Play’ is up 3 places to No4, ‘Super Smash Bros: Brawl’ is down 2 places to No5 and ‘Mario Kart Wii’ climbs 6 places to No6. Even the next title down is still Nintendo orientated, as Sega climb 3 places to No7 thanks to DS/Wii ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games’. Sega’s other Olympic tie-in, next-gen ‘Beijing 2008’ drops out of the Top 10, down 6 places to No14. Activision’s ‘Guitar Hero: On Tour’ makes a debut appearance on DS, only 57 units off a Top 10 placing. Ubisoft’s Wii mini-game party title ‘Sports Party’ is this week’s highest climber – up 16 places to No13.

28/Jul/2008

This week it’s a return to No1 for ‘Wii Fit’ (+32%) having lost out last week to ‘Lego Indiana Jones’.

THQ’s ‘Wall-E’ climbs 12% over last week but has to settle for No2 for a second successive week. ‘Mario Kart Wii’ climbs 23% to claim No3 and Activision Blizzard climb 7 places to No4 for the first full sales week of DS ‘Guitar Hero: On Tour’ (+46%). ‘Lego Indiana Jones’ drops from No1 to No5 (-15%) and a notable re-entry to the Top 10 is that perennial favourite ‘Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training’ up 7 places to No9 (+14%).

Ubisoft and Namco-Bandai welcome us back to the stage of history, ensuring that “the soul still burns” as ‘SoulCalibur IV’ debuts this week at No1 in the All Formats Chart.

It is the first All Formats No1 for the SoulCalibur franchise since ‘SoulCalibur II’ (GC, PS2 and Xbox) reached the summit for one week, back in September 2003. It has been almost 3 years since ‘SoulCalibur III’ was launched, only on PS2. Released on Xbox 360 and PS3 the long-anticipated sequel is the fastest selling in the franchise with the PS3 version outselling it’s PS2 predecessor’s launch week by more than 3 to 1. It is the fastest selling traditional beat-em up game to be launched on either PS3 or Xbox 360 (56% of sales were on Microsoft’s format) and marks a mini-revival for the genre after the recent success of Nintendo’s ‘Super Smash Bros. Brawl’ on Wii. Nintendo however have put up a good fight; despite dropping down to No2, ‘Wii Fit’ sales are up 35% on last week and sales of ‘Mario Kart Wii’, a non-mover at No3, are up 25%.

THQ’s ‘Wall-E’ drops 2 places to No4 – sales are slowing 3 weeks after the release of the film. THQ however can celebrate a strong showing from the hardware-bundled ‘Big Beach Sports’, up from No10 to No5, while former No1 ‘Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures’ moves in the opposite direction down from No5 to No10.

Nintendo’s ‘Mario Kart Wii’ overtakes fellow Wii blockbuster ‘Wii Fit’ at the top of the All Formats Chart, moving up 2 places from No3 (+6%) and ensuring that Nintendo clock up 9 All Formats No1’s in the past 19 weeks.

‘Wii Fit’ slacks off, sales down 24% at No2, but remains ahead of Sega’s rejuvenated Olympics titles with ‘Beijing 2008’ (No1 on Xbox 360 and PS3) sprinting 10 places to No3, while ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games’ climbs 4 places to No4. Nintendo and Sega now share the Top 5 thanks to ‘Wii Play’ holding on to No5. Nintendo claims the lead format on 8 of the Top 10 games with 6 out of the 10 exclusive to Wii or DS. Nintendo’s formats are performing well across the board with 15 DS or Wii games in the Individual Formats (units) Top 20. Activision-Blizzard maintain 2 Guitar Hero games in the Top 10 with ‘Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock’ a non-mover at No6 and DS ‘Guitar Hero: On Tour’ down from No7 to No10. There are only 2 new games that make the Top 40 this week and both are sports titles: EA’s ‘Madden NFL 09’ at No17 and ‘Summer Athletics’ from Eidos at No25.

The All Formats Top 5 are all non-movers this week with ‘Mario Kart Wii’ at No1 for a second week ahead of Wii Fit - sales of both are up 12%, while Sega’s Olympic duo remain at No’s 3 and 4 with Wii Play at No5.

Half the All Formats Top 10 is made up of party/mini game titles with ‘Carnival: Funfair Games’ breaking back into the Top 10, up from No13 to No6 thanks to the launch of the DS version of Take 2’s hugely successful party game. THQ’s top-sellers both improve on last week: ‘Big Beach Sports’ up one place to No7 and ‘Wall-E’ up from No11 to No9. ‘Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training’ moves up one place to No8 and has now spent a record-breaking 80 weeks in the All Formats Top 10, beating ‘Tomb Raider’ which managed 79 weeks. No new releases make the All Formats Top 40, but 2 week-old titles from Eidos and Empire make progress in the chart: Eidos’ ‘Summer Athletics’ up from No25 to No12 and Empire’s ‘Off Road’ making its first Top 40 appearance at No28.

Please note that with the recent launch of Platinum PS3 games, we have this week included PS3 Budget and Full Price charts

EA knock themselves off the top of the All Formats Chart this week, but it’s not the critically acclaimed ‘Spore’ which grabs top spot, rather the explosive ‘Mercenaries 2: World in Flames’. ‘Mercenaries 2’ sells 60% on Xbox 360 and 33% on PS3 with the remainer on PS2 and PC.

‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09’ is the only game in the All Formats Top 10 to rise in sales, up 9% on last week, but it still has to settle for 2nd place. ‘Spore’, designed by Sims creator Will Wright is only 1,162 units behind at No3, handing EA a clean sweep of the Top 3 games. Sales of ‘Spore’ account for 53% of all full priced PC games sold this week. The rest of the All Formats Top 10 all shuffle amongst themselves with Nintendo still making its presence felt in the Top 10 despite ‘Wii Fit’ dropping one place to No4, ‘Mario Kart Wii’ slipping from No2 to No6 and ‘Wii Play’ down 2 places to No7. Take 2 continue to celebrate strong sales of ‘Carnival: Funfair Games’, down from No4 to No5, while Sega’s ‘Mario and Sonic’ is down from No6 to No8.

THQ hang on in the All Formats Top 10 with ‘Big Beach Sports’ down 2 places to No9 and ‘Wall-E’ is a non-mover at No10. This week’s remaining non-EA new releases are all outside the Top 20: Microsoft’s Xbox 360 ‘Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise’ at No23, Deep Silver’s PC ‘S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky’ at No25 and Square-Enix’s Xbox 360 ‘Infinite Undiscovery’ at No28. Sales increases in the 2nd week of release see DS titles from Ubisoft and Atari break into the Top 40: ‘Imagine: Teacher’ at No31 and ‘Driving Theory Training’ at No39.

EA 1-2-3 second week in a row

EA continue the 1-2-3 at the top of the Entertainment Software Top 40 for a 2nd week with ‘Mercenaries 2: World in Flames’ (-5%), ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09’ (-9%) and ‘Spore’ (-23%).

Sega climb 4 places to No4 with ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games’ rocketing 85% over last week thanks mainly to promotional activity, especially on the Wii version. Nintendo drop one place to No5 with ‘Wii Fit’, although sales hold up over last week, and remain at No6 with ‘Mario Kart Wii’ climbing 17% over last week. Take 2’s ‘Carnival: Funfair Games’ drops 2 places to No7, up 3% over last week. Rocketing ten places and back in to the Top 10 at No8 is Activision’s ‘Guitar Hero: On Tour’ (+143%) which was a lead promotional title on DS. This week’s big new entry is Midway’s ‘TNA Impact!’ at No9 while Nintendo round off the Top 10 with ‘Wii Play (-8%) at No10.
