Baten Kaitos I&II HD Remaster (14th September 2023)

The amnesia cliche has played out well since I've remembered so little about this game.

Think it took me four goes to get past Geldoblame. Did some card management between retries (noticed it reverts the decks so you have to keep doing it for repeated attempts--annoying) but ultimately it didn't matter as I "just" needed to get lucky with his use of the OHKO move. Was my first deaths since the very early going, back when I was mentally preparing myself for many defeats outside my control. The traitor made themselves known. Wasn't sure exactly where to go next but since it was at this point you could finally move freely between islands, I thought I'd go back and check-in with the character from the beginning, and when I was there, I was curious if the mayor still hated me. Tipped me off on where to investigate if I was looking for a vortex. Which I was, and it cleared up where to find the rest. Though it did get a bit fetchquesty when you started needing an item to unlock them. At least it was always something nearby so on the way to the last one I took a punt on what magnus essence to trap and it did the job.

It took a bit longer to pick up the trail again later. Not sure if I missed it in the preceding cutscene because it was a bit weird it left me with no direction and things getting ever more urgent. I actually saved and exited to see the blurb when you load your file. It said we'd be heading to Alfard so I figured that was me back on track. Except when I exited Cursa to head to the dock, I wasn't on the world map which struck me as strange it'd expect me to push back through the wind. I hunted back through the castle for Barnette to see if she'd remind me how we'd left things and it triggered the next events. I totally missed it if she said come and talk to me when you're ready to go.

Alfard was teeming with easy battles and great exp returns. Going up and down those lifts pushed my mental mapping more than any previous area. An in-game map would have come in very handy. In one battle I was presented with a bunch of Pass cards... how'd Lyude get into the active party??

The boss at the top of the imperial fortress smacked me around a few times and all. Had me thinking I should retreat to a blue flower to use all that exp I was sitting on. I actually restarted to the last red flower save to redo my decks before the battle so I wouldn't have to keep tediously going through that between retries. Eventually the cards fell in my favour... only to walk into another boss battle straight after. Absolutely no peril with this one. I was using healing cards just to get them out of my hand!

Scenes ensued. Heartstrings were plucked at. Chills. Somehow a speck of dust seemed to get in my eye.

And we're off again. So far we've botched this world saving every time it matters. I've started landing a few 1000+ attacks so it's giving me hope this group might finally be starting to get their act together.

All this after I'd been looking at the boxart, wondering about the prominence of the characters shown.

I had that same thing happen to me in snowland. Why can't I get back on the weird horse thing. Oh, apparently I need a dragon... Sounds like you're ahead of me now. I returned to the capital post invasion but haven't stepped into it yet.

1k hits? Wow, I'm hitting maybe 700 max if I hit for weakness on everything. Only took one time for Geldoblame, so I win ¬_¬, have only fully fainted twice thus far. I get too worried leaving people behind for the mass level up, max was about 4 levels because I couldn't get to a blue flower at that time.

I'll try and do better tonight.

Baton down the Kaitos!

The battle length in this is no joke. I was considering turning on the OHKO QoL option to power through the latter stages.. but where's the sense of achievement in that? I'll admit I was pretty miffed at the battle-cutscene-rebattle bit in the cabin but I lucked through it eventually. It felt like I'd went above and beyond to get the story progression. But blooming heck. And I never want to come across block-pushing puzzles like in the Tower of Zomsaaargh again. Please Baten Kaitos Origins.

And what's with Komo-Mai becoming your base of operations? It never stops celebrating the Celestial Festival! A stark contrast to the story telling me the end is nigh.

But that's pretty much where my criticisms end. I breathed a sigh of relief when I was presented with a Chrono Trigger-style list of party member sidequests before converging on Cor Hydrae where we proceeded to clean the clocks of the final run of bosses. It was never too late for story revelations. From graphics to music to story and battle style (just wish battle animations could be sped up or skipped. World of Final Fantasy Maxima, for instance, allows you to hold R to fast-forward battles as and when you want and that would have been so welcome here, otherwise...), truly a great game. Very heartfelt. I had it as the lesser of the Skies of Arcadia-Tales of Symphonia-Baten Kaitos GameCube triumvirate and while that may still hold true for me, I feel the gap's a lot closer than I was giving it credit for. I just remembered this as having those lovely backdrops and little else going for it but that's far from the case. Three very different RPGs that are great in their own way.

If I ever do an Advanced New Game, it'll be a New Game+ and I'll flick on the QoL cheats and obliterate it. For now, they have released me.

-----------------

@EEVILMURRAY Finished it off over the weekend. Those 1,000+ hits reached into the 2,000s a few times which was nice to see. And, no it wasn't because I went back to Moonguile Forest to dish out some pwnage! Not sure if it made up for all the turns when I had one or no attacking options but I suppose that was the nature of the system. I took the elemental bonuses when I got them but didn't painstakingly modify my decks for each area or bosses--just made sure I was using the strongest of what I had no matter the elemental affinity. Maybe if you could scan enemies to see their weaknesses and resistences I'd have worried about it more. If you've only wiped out once you must be making a better fist of it than I did... or your cards are just coming out in a better order. You jammy swine.

I hate the demeeing battle against

Spoiler

Kalas. I remember him being my biggest pisstake on the Gamecube and he's true to form this time. I died twice before giving up because it was too late. I do have 2-3 levels in the bank for each character so may nip back to a blue flower. Or otherwise for the first time strip everyones deck down and build new ones for the chosen fighters with pure weakness hitting stuff. But give them more defence items than normal, the fucker attacks 7-8 times in one go, then attacks another fighter...

Then he becomes a pussy again when he rejoins you.

Great example of how different our experiences have been. The boss before that gave me trouble, then that one straight after barely laid a glove on me (to the point I was healing just to use the cards up). At that point I had:

Spoiler

Savyna
Xelha
Gibari

Then swapped Kalas back in for Savyna again for the rest of the game.

But their decks weren't specialised beyond taking the strongest of what I had.

Boss before was a piece of piss! I was surprised when he just keeled over, probably using his dick ray too much.

I was using Mizuti/Xelha/Gibari, then swapped out Xelha for Lyude as he had more light stuff and gave more stuff to Mizuti, and swapped in Savyna, as she can alternate between fire/water easily.

I'll put some more thought into it tonight. probably.

Yeah, must have been spent.

Looks like you've put plenty of thought into it already. Just pick the cards with the biggest numbers and try to resist building combos with fire+water, light+dark and the like. When the results screen showed a 80% resistance to something I just got on with it, when my combo cancelled itself out I was peeved at my carelessness.

It was like Ayme and Savyna for me--rattles off a long combo that barely makes a dent. The one before, I was surprised when he keeled over too because on that retry there was barely any jeopardy. On attempts leading to that, he boosted his stats and wiped us out one by one before any healing cards came through. The luck of the draw.

Only time the Great (Great ) Mizuti got a look in for me was the game of snap in the sidequest. In fact, I tried to skip that sidequest in the Tower of Zomsaaaaaargh and go finish the game but Mizuti kept gurning when I went to tell Corellia I was ready to end it. Let me know if those sidequests are optional or not.

Managed the redeeming battle last night. Never before have I had to tailor my deck so much, normally I try to keep a nice mix for all types, but having to remove all wind cards from The Great Mizuti's deck (although I missed one) - scandalous. Everyone went up about 3-5 levels that day.

Went through the clouds and then decided to save, my memory is blank at this point, which is nice. I think when I complete this one I'm going to go through Ori which I got on the sale as a bit of a palette cleanser before attempting Origins.

The only sidequest I've been trying to be bothered about is the family tree, but your path is so linear at the moment it's hard to go back to people.

Next they may need to remaster Lost Kingdom 1/2

Honestly can't believe the lengths you went to. Is there a card that works like Libra in Final Fantasy or did you just figure out what elements to go for from trial and error? I would have been hitting him with wind when it came up for Xelha and Gibari but like I said, we "breezed" through that encounter.

I think there are two more bosses I died to. Standing by for you swatting them aside. :D

As the philosopher said, the mind is a blank magnus.

Definitely. It'll be a while before I circle back for Origins.

Since I talk to all NPCs anyway, I thought rounding up the bracelet people would just naturally happen. Then you meet some that are stubborn and demand an essence or something that isn't trappable on the same island and by the time you're able to freely roam I'd lost all track of who was where and what they wanted.

I thought I was doing all right with the constellations until his next hint became something like "I hear flying creatures sometimes have them." Flying creatures in a particular area perhaps...? No? Well forget it.

@Happenstance Did you ever get over your aversion to cards and get this??

Haha, yeah. I was putting the search to work. I remember reading this remaster will be coming to PC so you aren't getting off scot-free yet. Keep it in mind if there's a demo.

Thankfully it only took me thrice tries, first I had him down to the weakened stance. Second he took out Lyude with a death move on the first/second move, so I was on the backfoot from the off, third I decided to put a bit more effort in. Still missed taking out a lv 3 Wind-a-blow from Mizuti's deck.

I would love more blank magus. I've got stuff that I know what to do with it but haven't hit the activation point yet (thunderfish bone/golden pickaxe), but I cannae use them yet and I can't remove them. I've saved some cheese for a family tree quest but I guess I'll remove that for the second time, now I have an essence of a book and divorce papers which will probably get removed too, but I'll check the FAQ to see what they're for first.

Same here, I know of about 2-3 people I need to do stuff for, but the amount of empty spaces I still have is a fair bit. And I'm about to hit the tower of Zomsaaaaaargh for the sword quest.

Stay tuned for more updates

Losing one character really can change the tide in a boss battle.

But not always. In Savyna's sidequest I hadn't anticipating her being automatically subbed in for the boss (it was probably obvious...) so what I did was leave her and her deck of pass cards dead in the sand while the remaining pair ground it out. She was miraculously up and about for the following cutscene. Faker.

As far as I remember, I only got one or two more blank magnus as the game wound down. I ended up releasing three or four for Zomsa and again for the desert. Think I carried some fish thing until the credits but the pickaxe I released pretty soon after using it in the Tower of Druaga bit.

Climbing Zomsa wasn't terrible. The best bit, imo, was when you start to see the boss(es).

Be prepared for an exceptionally unfun time if you take the sidequest to go back later. And if you don't, I want to know how you rejected or cancelled it.

Those kitties have already shafted me thrice times. I've got about 4ish levels to do from the tower, so I may have to duck out and then come back. First time I managed to take one out, next couple of times I didn't manage to take either out before falling.

Kitties? I thought they were damn dirty dogs. If I remember right, I got them at the second time of asking by going after the one on the right because on the first go, it smugly boosted their attack allowing them to do a swift number on me. I didn't expect that tweak in tactics to work immediately so the cards must have come out right for me and less favourably for it on that second go. Once it was dispatched with, the other one pretty much just sat there and buffed its defence while we (Kalas, Gibari, Xelha) dealt with it at our leisure. I'm sure you can leave those levels for after if you double check to make sure your best ATK and DEF cards are in your decks.

I've been using Kalas, Mizuti and Savyna, but I may swap Kalas out for Gibari. Take out the water weak one first hard and heavy, then slog it against the water resistance one. I'll see how I feel after work

My masterplan worked @darksnowman, unfortunately it took a small turn when they forced another boss upon me without my having added anything to Kalas' deck after stripping him of his armour, so I had about half a deck of Pass cards. Still managed it first time though. Savyna went up 10 levels and a class after that.

Glad to hear it. If I learned anything in Baten Kaitos, it's keep retrying and you'll get there sooner or later.

Yeah, that prat that was calling down Malpercio like Magus summoning Lavos. I'd have squashed him behind some blocks in the Tower of Zomsa without a second thought. Clown. The battle went smoothly for me however I'd have had a similar problem to contend with as Mizuti would have been foisted into my party for that. It was a feel-good battle after they opted to get out of dodge then turned around to face Malpercio head on. The story is kicking up a gear.

Don't forget to check your equips (if you can find them in the menus) are up to date.

After that "kitty" duo, there's only one more I lost to. It'll be interesting to see if it's a doddle for you. Depending on how much you get through before you next report in, pay attention when it presents you with the party member sidequests. I want to know if you have to do them or if there's a way to cancel out of them because I seemed to be locked into them with no way to back out.

Do you mean the Return Of The Jack (amo) ?

I did both phases first time, but it was slow going.

Are you on about where it asks you to ask about the different locations and you can't get out of the menu, even after hearing everything? I did manage to get out of it, what I did was (after putting it on sleep mode because t'was dinner time) I started to go through them again, but held B to skip, after about half of them it moved on to the next cutscene.

I then made the mistake of talking to the Queen lady and saying I was ready to take on Cor Hydrae and it then moved to a bedroom scene. I think that made me skip all of those other things at the other locations, so I wasn't having that.

I shut down the game and loaded up the autosave. Then saved regular style after going up many levels and Kalas going up another class.

The very one. Return of the Jack and his Lackey's. I'd at least one retry there which wasn't great because it was the Mr Kipling of exceedingly long encounters. You know how those spirit-dampener things are in play? A morphed cards still came up for me so I think even the game was getting fed up with the nip-and-tuck battle. Based on our yin and yang experiences I just knew it wouldn't be such a spanner in the works for you. I'd no more wipe-outs from then on so there could be tough times ahead for you and your lot.

How you liking the story? Probably a cheesefest to plenty but it was working for me. If someone isn't invested by this point they should have called it quits tens of hours ago.

Yeah the part when someone comes forward with intel that conveniently makes for one note for each of you. When I got to Mizuti's, I took one look at it and tried to press on to Cor Hydrae but the game was having none of it. Still wondering if they're optional or not without having to resort to an exploit like you did for science/ dinner.

@darksnowman how many quests did you attempt before trying to skip, all but Mizuti?

I've only just done Gibari's after wandering about as I forgot about all the locations and sorted out the Guardian.

I also managed to find my way into the Illusory Fortress of the Book, not sure if that is Xelha's or not, but I got bored of that quickly and headed for the FAQ to make my way through. According to that one of the family tree peeps is hidden in there, but wasn't when I went through, but apparently you have to speak to his children first.

The journey continues.

I did the book one first as it was nearby in Komo-Mai so I felt like a smart cookie triggering it with my adventure book magnus from down below and was high on enthusiasm with those random doors. By the time I got to Mizuti's and saw what it was going to be... I wanted out.. Especially since my active party wasn't going to change.

Lyude's was freaky. The game tortures him. I had to empty out four or five magnus tor Savyna's.

Do you reckon you're still on track for the family tree? Impressive. Wonder if it's going to be worth it!

I was just wandering around Komo-Mai since I saw some of the Earth Children around so got chatting. Then began a quest to get people to carry the parade thing again. Missing 1 person but can't be bothered to look soon.

I was happy I kept that adventure book, It was a choice earlier between that book and another book in which one I had to get rid of to make space for other stuff.

On track for family tree? Oh I think definitely not. I keep trying to find the cook lady to give her the cheese but I can't find her anymore, I thought she was in the cloud castle place, but the kitchen has disappeared. I know where about 3 people are that need some stuff given to them to make them write their names down, but I think my progress is slow.

Didn't notice/ do that but I'm not surprised it's in there because those people need no excuse. Earth Children had to flee their homes? Let's celebrate!
