Grand Ages: Medieval (PC, PS4 [previewed])

Developer: Gaming Minds

Publisher: Kalypso Media

Release Date: PC September 25, 2015 / PS4 September 29

I've nicked the following from the Playstation Blog:

To give you a quick introduction, Grand Ages: Medieval is the second entry in the Grand Ages series and the first to appear on console. While this is our first title for PS4, the development team at Gaming Minds is comprised of strategy veterans with experience going back 19 years, and we’ve been releasing strategy titles on PlayStation platforms as far back as the PS2 era. Along with our publishers Kalypso Media, we’re really happy to be back on PlayStation and continuing the Sony tradition by releasing Grand Ages: Medieval on PS4.

For those new to the genre, Grand Ages: Medieval is a real-time, grand scale strategy game that takes place in the High Middle Ages. The game begins in the year 1050 A.D. as you assume the role of a mayor governing a small European settlement. Your goal is to lead your people through the decades by expanding your trade routes and nation’s influence; and eventually, begin conquering all of Europe. Aspiring empire builders will have to utilize politics, trade, warfare, and research advancing technologies to assert their empiric control over the 20 million km playing area. With that kind of scale we hope you’ll begin to see just how “grand scale” Grand Ages: Medieval’s campaign will be.

In addition, we’ll have an exciting, eight-player multiplayer mode available for when you want to take a breather from the main campaign. A cool and unique feature of our multiplayer is that you’ll be able to set commands and protocols that let you take breaks from multiplayer without ever having to leave the game. This feature is great for playing with and against friends in other territories when timezones interrupt your schedule, but should only be used sparingly as you may come back and find you’ve slept through your own defeat. And PS4 players can expect full 1080p in all modes.

So, on behalf of the entire team at Gaming Minds Studios I really hope you’ll be looking forward to the release of Grand Ages: Medieval on PS4 this September, and we look forward to sharing more with you before launch.

I think it looks pretty awesome.

Nice. I've played some of Grand Ages Rome on my computer, but seeing as I'm not really a computer gamer and only use the touchpad I didn't spend much time on it. But I liked what I saw from the limited time I spent on it and I might pick this up very early.

Did you check the video for this? It seems pretty awesome from that. How does the video compare to what you played of Rome?

Not sure if this can be played on @Eenuh's macbook, so I'm tempted to go down the PS4 route for this.

Tropico works well. I was pleasantly surprised.

Sounds similar to Tropico which has a demo on PSN at the minute. Fun for a while!

We bought Tropico on Steam for Mac, seems like a fun game. Has an excellent sense of humour.

Ese has just reminded me that there's a demo for Tropico on the PS4. I'll download that, because I'm curious myself to see how it controls. Should give us some sort of indication how RTS works on PS4.

I've just downloaded the demo and played it for a bit. You know what, it does control really well! I did the tutorial but didn't win the election...I ended up building too many things at once and nothing ended up being completed. Booo.

So did anyone buy this? I think it was supposed to be released on PS4 on Friday last week in Europe, at least part of Europe. Mine hasn't been shipped yet, and I just got told from customer service that there is no nordic distributor of the game, so they had to import it from a foreign supplier. Hopefully they will ship it by the end of the week, but by then I have no time to play the game, with Witcher 3 expansion and Tales of Zestiria being prioritized.

It's weird though, that's the first time I can recall a game only being released in parts of Europe.

So this game is hard to get...and not much desired by anyone but me :p

Seems like there has been a mistake at the supplier of supplier of the game or something, so now the expected shipping date is "sometime in November". I knew it wouldn't result in much, but I checked Gamestop today just in case, but they didn't even have it registered in their system.

I can get it digital, but I always prefer the physical versions when it comes to games.

Is it actually any good? Did you get it for PS4?

I was interested in this but it's fallen right to the back of the list considering what else is out this year.

Shipping, customs and a strange 10 pund "import fees deposit" included I'm looking at around £60+ to have it by Friday. I can wait a little more, but thanks :)

Hopefully "sometime in November" doesn't mean November 30th. :p

I did get it for PS4. Navigating and everything was fine and simple to do. The game itself was more complicated than Tropico and I got distracted by Tearaway Unfolded and AC: Syndicate so haven't played much of it yet.

Finally got the game today. Did the first few missions in the campaign to learn rules of the game, then started a campaign beginning in Bergen, Norway. I have three towns so far, one taken over by diplomatic means. Not sure if I'm doing things right though :p

So I didn't get much further after writing the above. Tried to get into the game several times since but never made it further or understood the game any better.

Finally got into the game last week and started to understand the trading mechanism a little bit. It's kind of like the resource allocating from Anno, but it's dependant on merchants buying low in one city and then sell it high in another along a trade route you create. So if a city needs a particular goods you need not only create a trade route, assign a trader but also somehow manipulate the prices to get the trader to dump the goods for a profit, if not he's just gojng to move on to the next city on the route. This is part I'm not entirely sure on. For the most part I just created and changed trade route according to production. If a city suddenly needed leather I changed a nearby trade route to include that city, possible change the order of the cities to make sure a leather producing city was visited first and then the leather needing city immiedietly after, hoping the trader would transport the leather and make some profit for me. Usually worked, for the most part.

I have finished the campaign and achieved the platinum, but if it does not get too tiresome, I will attempt to conquer all of Europe in free play. So far, in the campaign pictured below, I have Italy, France, Britain and German region. 10 more regions to go.

An overview of my empire so far with an example of trade route with a merchant in Northern Italy.

Game looks great the few times you zoom in.

I played through the tutorial once but my brain wasn't holding any information that day and I had no clue what I was doing. It's sat on my shelf ever since. Is it good? Once you understand it? lol

It's a bit average I guess, Metacritic score is 64 and is appropiate, but it was fun and addictive once I had an idea of what to do. I was a really surprised about how fast time passed while playing the game.
