flameboy Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/my-retro-game-box-is-loot-crate-for-games/0144822 A new subscription service for retro gamers that follows the successful Loot Crate formula has been unveiled. It’s called My Retro Game Box. Subscribers will each receive a random selection of retro games that are theirs to keep. The supported formats are NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy, Game Boy Colour, GBA, Master System and Mega Drive/Genesis. Both PAL and NTSC titles are available, and the service ships worldwide. Users can also specify genre likes or dislikes – such as no sports games. All games are guaranteed to be working. And clean. Membership costs $35 a month, $100 for three months, $190 for six months or $350 for a year. There are no contracts, with long-term memberships paid in advance. Shipping to the UK is free. “We want you to help us make good choices for you, but we draw the line at giving us a wish-list, otherwise it just isn't a surprise,” the site said. “It will also be important to find out if you're a fun loving collector, who won't be bothered with a scuff or a faded label here and there. That kind of thing can greatly effect the value of the games, so you'll be missing out on gaming fun if you need your games to be in mint condition. “We have a budget to spend on you every month and we'll try to get the balance of great games/number of games right. The more consoles you have the better - if we're not limited then you're likely to receive more.” http://www.myretrogamebox.com/
nekunando Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I'm doing my best at the moment to get rid of some of my surplus games so the thought of receiving a random selection of things each month sounds absolutely terrifying to me Perhaps there's a market out there for something like this but for the money quoted, surely it would be preferable to obtain a handful of games that you actually want each month instead of waiting for the postman to bring you a selection of things that someone else thinks you might want..
flameboy Posted February 6, 2015 Author Posted February 6, 2015 I'm doing my best at the moment to get rid of some of my surplus games so the thought of receiving a random selection of things each month sounds absolutely terrifying to me Perhaps there's a market out there for something like this but for the money quoted, surely it would be preferable to obtain a handful of games that you actually want each month instead of waiting for the postman to bring you a selection of things that someone else thinks you might want.. Yeah I do tend to agree...for me the price would be $41. Just a quick scout around ebay and I've already found 3 games I could easily buy for that much!
Goafer Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I imagine it would be good for fleshing out a collection, but to me the fun part in collecting comes from finding bargains or tracking down rare games. Neither of those will come from this box, since they need to make money on it. The problem with collecting retro stuff is that most people already know what they want to collect. The random element isn't really necessary. Even if people do like that, there's already a random (or at least unpredictable) aspect to car boot sales etc. It all depends how it works. If they act as a sort of personal shopper and spent $30 out of the $35 monthly fee on you, then it could work as long as they were honest on what they spent it on. For example, if they bought you a $30 game for $5, you'd get that plus $25 worth of other stuff, instead of just that one game because it's "market value" met the budget. Same goes for much rarer games, so if they found a super rare $100+ game for $10, they would buy it for you as it's within the monthly budget. But then, they'd be stupid to do that instead of just flogging it on ebay and buying you something else. In short, I can't see anything special coming in those boxes, which defeats the whole point of collecting.
