Haden Posted February 24, 2014 Author Share Posted February 24, 2014 Talking Points Special and Mushroom League Eights the King Eights United carried on their dominance of the Special league by beating Hadens Legends with ease 3-0 and then hosting the Familia and again winning this time 3-1. Both times Eights have been clinical with just five chances and both times long serving captain Beck has scored bringing his total goals to 4 in 4 games. Eights will clearly be making it through to the knockouts but the question is can they get a 100% record? Their next game may answer this as it is against Winston Lions away from home. For now long live the King! Rovers defensive record Rossers Rovers after a very hard start to their campaign kept to clean sheets against Lords of Hydra and AFC Dedede. Their keeper Brezhnev after letting in 8 goals from 2 matches must be credited with this improvement. He is a very intelligent keeper entering the prime of his career and organises his defence with skill and level headedness. Defenders such as Bulatov and Wohlfarth have fantastic stamina and can give 100% until the final whistle. This is promising stuff from Rovers but this now needs to be matched with some goals as they still have not found the net, their next game is at home to Hadens Legends they would love to score a debut goal in that match. Kippen FC 4 point miracle Kippen FC shocked many pundits this week by beating AC Elites 2-1 and then holding Inter to a draw 1-1 away. The first game saw them against their old foes who are one of the strongest teams in the group and to be frank they bossed the game. Playing 4-5-1 they earned 11 chances to 2, Vogele set up MacEllar for the first before Zell hit back to make it 1-1. However the Kippen pressure was undeniable and Vogele scored with a header of his own to send the Kippen crowd roaring as Kippen notched up their first ever win against AC Elites. Kippen held firm with a 4-5-1 formation and went to Inter, they bossed possesion and again Vogele scored with a headed goal, they limited Inter's chances to three but Inter levelled when new striker Skywalker bundled home a late equaliser. Despite this Kippen are top of the group 3 points ahead, are undefeated and have the best goal difference, so far Kippen are the big surprise of this Champions League. Crunch time for Leeds Leeds M.O.T have also been performing well in the Mushroom League. They played a daring 3-4-3 formation against Recall United that saw Townshend, Pipsek and Burchell shine with goals aplently but they were losing that game at one point. This concern became an embarrassment as they were mauled by the Elites on Friday, 5-0 showing no resistance. It has to be said that Leeds have quite a small squad that while being full of talent may lose a straight power struggle with the veteran sides. This makes Leeds home tie against a struggling Inter so interesting, the Leeds manager will have to think long and hard about a game plan for this one turning up in a normal formation may not cut it. The youths making a difference This has been a good week for youth players, Inter as pointed out before were saved an embarrassing home loss to Kippen when 17 year old Skywalker scored on his debut to become an instant fan favourite. The goals scorers that helped Aqui1a win over Recall were both under 23 and The Familia were given a vital away point when Chase who is only 22 scored for them against Winston Lions. Sometimes putting a youth on does not just help with development but can give your side an unexpected element or added imputes that can unbalance your opposition. Were positions to stay as they are now, teams from the top two of each group might find themselves up against the likes of Draggoo, Inter, Lylat, Winston or even Silverdale in the first round of knockouts. Given the impact of securing a top two finish on youth development, teams may begin to place less pressure on securing that top-two spot. 2 - Can DuD sustain their three game clean-sheet record? After Eights in the special league, DuD’s Baggies have been the standout performer in the champion’s league so far, albeit with a team that couldn’t be described as top-tier. Impressive performances have seen the team keep three clean sheets in the league thus far - couple this with an impressive away with in a friendly with Yellow Sub last week and we could be looking at a real title contender. However with Coloccini, Lylat and Silverdale coming up, this will be a more testing period for the club. 3 - Federer takes the first set this season The managers of N-Europe by now are familiar with the talents of Roger not only as a 17 time grand slam winning tennis player but as a talented manager. Even with this in mind, given a team that is still in it’s adolescence of development, his results this season have been extremely impressive, compounding his strong start last week with a 4-0 victory over Draggoo, then a solid performance away to Winston. All eyes are on the top of the group double-header against Zell on Friday. 4 - More mad results for the Pool Madpool over the past three seasons have been a team that have never failed to baffle, frustrate, and entertain. With an insistance on offensive tactics and a preference toward playing 3-5-2, the club’s results this season have been emblematic of their problems. Last week saw an incredibly impressive 8 - 0 win to 64’ers (Were we aware such a scoreline to be even possible in this game engine?) yet losses earlier this season to Draggoo and FRC will have disappointed a group of fans used to a legacy of top-three elite league finishes. The club will no doubt secure a top 4 finish and will be a threat to whoever they draw in the knockouts through their sheer unpredictability, but fans should perhaps view this as a transistion period at the club, with Thijssen and Freeman the picks of an impressive youth lineup threatening to break through. 5 - Strong showing from an ever-improving Coloccini team For a team with 12 players under the age of 25 Coloccini’s manager must be generously applauded for his work at the club. Costa, Mallo, Dogaru and Aaslicher represent real strength in the next decade at the club, yet the team is already starting to excell, picking themselves up from a disappointing first game against Lylat to win three on the trot. This is a team saturated with special talents, and given an even spread of strrength throughout the team, they can be a match for any. I noticed when watching the match live that the table indicates that only the top two will qualify. I guess that doesn't mean anything? I thought that was the case? Top 2 teams in each league go to the QF knock out round? From the X11 Rules The CL-system is a straight system where the top division consists of a group phase where 8 teams advance to a playoff with quarterfinals, semi-finals and a final. It's a straight knockout cup, single leg at a neutral ground. Surprisingly easy win over Fedex today, not sure what to make of that! Spotlight Last week the spotlight was onRussian Revolution and Madpool.. Players were to predict the outcome and how many chances would be made in the game. The closest guess was Haden (also Bob) who said Madpool would win 3-1 with 11 chances. The actual result was 3-1 to Madpool and 16 chances. Spotlight Standings: Haden: 2 Bob: 1 This week the spotlight is on Lylat Wanderers vs DuDs Baggies. Please predict the outcome and how many players aged under 25 will be playing in the match - starting line ups only. This is what I'm hoping for. There should be a reason to push for the top spot to ensure that you don't get match against another top team.
