jayseven
Woah dude. I've seen your pics on fb and hadn't thought about the healthcare woes! Shit son. There was reciprocal health care in Aus, so I didn't bother getting any travel insurance. I hope yours can help, financially. Otherwise I hope you can get some form of compensation. It's kind of disgusting to even imagine being in that situation, where you've been doing nothing but trying to help others and... shit. Best wishes man! One of the conditions of the type of visa I'm here on is that I obtain travel insurance. Obviously the issue is that my accident happened at work. I mean it as stupid expensive to add work onto it, I've submitted all my forms through works insurance for hope that it all gets covered through that. Basically waiting till 27th July at which point me and my girlfriend will have lived together for one year and I can then apply for Permanent Residence through her. Then I get a health card and all the benefits of free health card just like the NHS.
flameboy
So I finally got my URGENT Orthopaedic referral clinic ring me only to tell me they have an 18 MONTH waiting list. I explained how the Doctor thinks I have a possible avulsion of a ligament and he told me to "agressively rest" and not put any wait on it till I've seen the specialist, the woman was just like well I'll see what we can do the Doctor will assess your notes tomorrow and we will call you. Have I heard anything, have I bollocks.Tried ringing them got answering machine. FFS... Meanwhile on the work front...they have agreed to pay for 66% of 30 hours a week for the next 26 weeks if it takes that long. However work insurance company won't pay out on my fees they only pay out on canadian citizens. So now I basically have to bodge together a pretend story about the accident didn't happen at work for my travel insurance.
Jimbob
How the heck do you "agressively rest". Hopefully the travel insurance believe the story, otherwise that's gonna be a painful bill.
jayseven
Could coming home and sorting things out in the UK be an option at all?
flameboy
How the heck do you "agressively rest". Hopefully the travel insurance believe the story, otherwise that's gonna be a painful bill. I know!!! It basically means do nothing but rest. Which I have done now for two weeks. I've barely left the house, went to Walmart once using the shopper car thing, I went to Vampire Weekend (we changed our tickets and got disabled seating where I could put my foot up on a rest) and went to the cinema (again got a foot rest). The day after each of these outings I've felt like shit really strained so I guess he meant don't do anything at all! Could coming home and sorting things out in the UK be an option at all? Yes. My insurance covers taking me back to the UK if so. I already have a flight booked in Summer to go home and back to here. So I guess if I was to go home have whatever done and if need be sit and rest at home until my return flight here in August.

Tough, but necessary really.
flameboy
Fair point, doing nothing at all will drive me crazy. Tough, but necessary really. Yeah it's real boring and frustrating. I was playing Dragon Age 2 yesterday got bored and restless so flipped on netflix and caught the eject button on my PS3 remote wanted to go back to Dragon Age was so pissed at effort that would go into getting up to put it back in. Until I realised you can switch it off and back on and again and pull the disc back in lol. My frustrations also manifest in the form of the inlaws lol. They are worrying its damaged and I'm not walking after 2 weeks what's wrong. Despite the fact that I keep saying if I have the injury for GP suspects, its a long process of up to 6 weeks before I'm back up and about, it's been 2 weeks and 1 day. They are flipping out saying lets go to A & E get them to sort it. I'm not sitting around all day uncomfortable and in pain plus paying for a whole new set of xrays etc... only to be told yep you need to rest. I'd rather wait for this Orthopaedic specialist to tell me what's up. In laws worried about surgery etc...but looking at it surgery not usual in these cases and not considered until after 10 weeks. Jimbob
Thats the problem, you know how the situation will turn out if going back to the hospital. But others may not, so yeah save the money only to be told something you know. Waste of time indeed. I recall a few years ago having a few ingrowing toenails removed, was told to stay off the foot for 2 or so days. Got bored after a few hours of no walking, moved around and i should of heeded the advice. Same for when i damaged ligaments in my foot and cracked the knee joint as well, didn't stay still and i feel twinges still.
flameboy
Yep...everything I read about this injury says sustained rest and slow progress back to 80%. If ankle is unstable there is not a lot to do.
Jon
Anything involving ligaments is not good. I tore my ACL when I was younger and it was 14 months of hell. Had to wait 3 weeks after doing it for the op to allow the swelling to go down. 10 weeks of allowing the ligament to heal, wearing a fucking annoying knee brace, doing absolutely nothing but watching daytime TV. Spent the next few months doing excruciating rehab. Having to learn how to walk again is a very sobering experience, it's one of the few things you always take for granted and all of a sudden your leg no longer knows how to do it. Took the best part of 16 months to get back into full physical activity, probably closer to 2 years to get fully comfortable with it and to get rid of the mental anguish everytime I went in for a tackle during football. Yeah....Me and a friend just signed up for the local footie team and now I've had to put it off. Very annoying....especially seem as my rough tackling is the only way I know lol. flameboy
Sooooo....it's 4 weeks today since I did this and I've had a follow up appointment and xray and the Doctor is now worried that my joint has fused. So I've got to go for an MRI and to see another specialist. Also even though I hate the adverts, going to get in touch with an accident/injury lawyer. I'm not really sure what work could be liable for but worth a try. Losing so much money from income on second job it's unreal. Plus fusing joints is no joke and could have long term health concerns. flameboy
Well I posted this on facebook as these are the facts: Went for MRI scan and I've officially torn the ligaments around my ankle, shame it took them nearly 7 weeks to figure this out! Next step specialist to see if it will heal alone or needs surgery!
