Dcubed Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 (edited) http://rareminion.com/twelvetales.html Interestingly, not much of it ended up being reused in Conker's BFD! There's a few bits (like the signpost, the dancing flower textures, text boxes, one piece of music and the boulder rolling) which were reused as is and a few bits that were modified (barrel rolling and conker shooting), but the grand majority of it really was completely scrapped! I always had the impression that they re-used a lot more than they actually did It's not really hard to see why it was scrapped. It doesn't look any fun at all and also feels like a series of test environments loaded with a bunch of disparate mechanics, while lacking any sort of vision, goal or focus (which ties nicely into a comment that a former Rare employee made recently, who claimed that it was "not a good game") http://www.notenoughshaders.com/2012/08/21/donnchadh-murphy-chats-about-rare/ Also Conker is an annoying little shit in this game. Thank God they shoved a pint down his gullet! Edited September 18, 2012 by Dcubed
darksnowman Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 I remember seeing screenshots and previews of Twelve Tales in NMS and thinking it looked like another quality Rare game in the making. Though I'm not sure why seeing as I'm not a fan of Banjo-Kazooie or DK 64. That video has some interesting stuff in it but nothing that would have really stood out from any other 3D platformer of the time, I feel. Anyone own or play Conker's Pocket Tales? I thought it was pretty horrific. @Dcubed, your next mission, should you choose to accept it is to track down some details and footage of the fabled Timber platform game Rare had in development.
S.C.G Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Interesting video, as a long-term fan of Conker's Bad Fur Day though I think it's now pretty safe to say that things worked out for the better but I like how a lot of the early music wouldn't have felt out of place in a Banjo game and in fact one of the tracks featured in the video did make it into Banjo-Tooie - the on-rails part was re-used for the UFO mini-game - plus it was pretty surreal to hear the main theme from Jet Force Gemini in there too. Well worth watching if only to realise how wrong things could have turned out. : peace:
Captain Falcon Posted September 29, 2012 Posted September 29, 2012 Anyone own or play Conker's Pocket Tales? I thought it was pretty horrific. Horrific is bit harsh. It was solid but far from remarkable. I will always remember it most for having two versions of the game on the cart - if you play on the GBC you get one version and if you play on a regular GB you get a different one. They are fundamentally the same but the levels have a different order to them and things in the levels are in different places.
Dcubed Posted October 2, 2012 Author Posted October 2, 2012 @Dcubed, your next mission, should you choose to accept it is to track down some details and footage of the fabled Timber platform game Rare had in development. Heh, funny you should mention that. An interview that was just released revealed that it was actually never in development http://www.notenoughshaders.com/2012/10/01/crash-lab-life-after-rareware-and-free-radical/ Can you or Lee provide any details on this rumor? It’s interesting because Diddy Kong Racing takes place on Timber Island so it seemed that Rare really liked the Timber character.Martin Wakeley says: I couldn’t say for definite but I have no recollection of that ever being in development. Where the rumour may have started is that an early version of DKR (I think it was called RC Pro Am at the time) had Timber as the lead character. I’m sure I’ve got a badly fitting Nylon polo shirt with the game logo on it somewhere. Lee Musgrave says: There was never a Timber 64 game. Yes, there was Pro-Am64 that had Timber as the main character, but that became Diddy Kong Racing and that was the end of that. :p
