darksnowman Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Know how Puyo Puyo came out in Japan on the VC with added online but that never came over here? Well the other day I read that SF II is getting that treatment in Japan too: While the Wii Virtual Console continues to decompose in the West, Japan's still getting the goods, with a few enhancements to boot. The latest game to hit the service is the Mega Drive version of Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers, brought up to date with online play via Nintendo WiFi Connection. By comparison, in the West we have Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers on Super NES with, of course, no online play. This isn't the first time we've seen online play added to a classic game though: SEGA added multiplayer to Puyo Puyo earlier this year to celebrate the franchise's 20th anniversary, of course. We still haven't seen that release in Europe or North America, and it's unlikely we'll ever get to pummel T. Hawks online either. Yeah, they weren't hopeful of this making it outside of Japan and nor was I - why would anyone be? Well... it turns out that Capcom are planning on bringing it to us in the west too: Here's a nice surprise - the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive version of Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers is coming to the Japanese Virtual Console with online play added. On the surface, that's not entirely great news, as most of us are not in Japan. However, I can confirm that this is indeed coming soon for US / EU as well, though there's no set date. (From Capcoms official blog) Its very late in the day as this sort of thing should have been done with every single VC game that has multiplayer from day one. Hopefully its a turning point and bodes well for the future. Maybe one day we could have online Super Mario Kart...! I think I have this version of Street Fighter downloaded onto my VC. It would be fantastic if Capcom put out an update to add online but I won't be holding my breath.
nekunando Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Maybe one day we could have online Super Mario Kart...! That's the dream It's a shame they didn't start doing this sort of thing with other Virtual Console games as it would definitely have encouraged me to download even more games..
peterl0 Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Was the megadrive version any good? Even the SNES version had smaller sprites and lost some frames of animation. Even with online I am not sure I would be tempted.
Zechs Merquise Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I got this last night, it was 800 points. It's OK. But to be fair, Capcom has done everything very bare bones. It's the megadrive version too, so it doesn't sound as good or look as good as the SNES version. The online is OK, but no stat tracking what-so-ever. I won ten games in a row online then quit lol! Anyone wanting a game, PM me!
S.C.G Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Perhaps the biggest gripe I have with this is that the Xbox 360 has had online enabled versions of pretty much all variations of SFII including a HD remake, all with stat-tracking etc... these have been available for years and yet the Wii only gets this now. I really hope downloadable games for the Wii U won't have a really harsh 40MB limit slapped on them again, I know... seperate issues as the majority of VC games have been fantastic but Wii-Ware? Some Wii owners don't even know that it exists.

Some Wii owners don't even know that it exists. Hopefully Nintendo have learned their lesson and will fully embrace all aspects of online with the Wii U. It looks promising so far. In fact, they don't even have to do it themselves if they are so worried about preserving their own games, just let other companies do what they want is all we ask. More like Wii-Where? You'd think there should be no fridge issues with the Wii U so hopefully the days of the 40MB limit are long gone. Especially as they are going to start offering full retail games via download. It would be extremely backward (even for Nintendo) to do that and have the audacity to still impose a limit on downloadable titles.
