Musings on my day/car safety

As people may have gleaned from the good stuff/photography thread, I went to a car show today.

Now I go to quite a few car shows, mainly old VW based (beetles, campers etc), but todays show was a bit more boy racer style, what with it being called The Fast Car show.

Normally at the family oriented, VW shows I see 1 maybe 2 disabled people. Not enough for me to think anything out of the ordinary. At todays show, I noticed quite a few. Not that I look out for this sort of thing, but it was noticeably more than the usual shows I go to.

This has lead me to 2 possible conclusions:

The carers/parents decide to take them to a car show and decide on the show with the generic name/more popular style of modified cars.

Or, as it is more boy racer oriented, more of the regular attendees will be into driving fast on public roads and as a result end up in accidents. These accidents could be what has caused these disabilities.

It just got me thinking really. It was like I was seeing the undesired results of hooning around. There were quite a few people in wheelchairs/on crutches and a few other people with various injuries/ailments.

One thing that was really memorable for me was one kid/young adult who clearly had a mental disability. I saw him early in the day with his dad and thought it was nice to see a dad and his son enjoying the show. I saw him later sat on his own rocking back and forth and breathing really loudly. Loud enough to make me think he was damaging himself. I assumed the dad was off getting drinks as it was in the bar. I almost went over to ask if he was alright, but I didn't know how he would react to me.

It just really showed that it's not just the person in the accident that has to live with the results. It's something I've known for ages, but today just made it seem all the more real. Even if the guys disability wasn't a result of an accident. It was just really moving to see a dad looking after his son and the son enjoying himself, despite his disability.

Anyone else have any thoughts on any of this?

One of my best friends growing up had a severe mental disability, and it was a huge impact on everyone around him, because you always had to be careful that he wasn't doing something he could hurt himself with. With my friend it was like one almost had to communicate in another language too.. definitely takes time to be able to adapt to look after a child/adult like that.

One of my neighbours has a learning disability too, he has hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain) and he needs 24 hour care. Awful stuff.

Things like this always bring up a huge moral "discussion" with regards to abortions/assisted suicides and quality of life.

Euthanasia is illegal in the UK?

It's been legal here for ages and I'm happy that it is. It benefits lots of people. Last week a couple both performed euthanasia, so they could die together (man was terminally ill, the woman was old with the usual old age complaints and didn't want to end up alone).

It's so much better than people having to commit suicide. This is a much more humane situation.

I have a neighbour next door who(according to what I've heard) tried to kill herself. She jumped off a balcony and landed on her head on the edge of the curb(might be an exaggeration, but she at least hit her head). She survived and her husband has to take care of her. Now she spends all night every night screaming and crying and generally trying to get attention from that "BASTARD" called Richard. I think she might be in pain or just wants something, but he must have earplugs. Since he still takes care of her I assume there is nothing he can do or she is just an attention seeker.

I had a recording of how loud she is and I don't think she sleeps. Or she sleeps during the day. Or she shouts this stuff while asleep. "Richaaaaarrddd... Yi fuckin baaaastaaaard yi... *sobbing*... Yi deaf cunt yi!" the whole fucking night. Luckily I developed an ability to sleep through anything, because my windows is closest to her, but for the people who share the same wall as her next door it must be really loud and annoying.

Edit: Just realise how evil I sound now...

Its not really evil, its how people see it... the harsh truth.

Mentally damaged people have lost awareness of most of the things going on around them or the people around them. They lose a lot of the more finesse parts of their personality. They don't know that their screaming is keeping people awake, all they know is that they need to scream and its as simple as that, sadly.
