Horror Films

So I've been watching a lot more horror films recently; Halloween (dated now), Alien (still beautiful), Buffy (yes, that bad), Saw IV (crappy torture porn really), Cronos (didn't like it tbh).

 

So those are all fine but I was wondering which horror films everyone else liked?

 

Any underrated or criminally overlooked gems?

 

I think there's only one film that genuinely terrifies me.

 

 

Not joking. That scares the shit out of me. It's the only film that really does.

I really love The Blair Witch Project. I think the Psycho remake was creepy and decent. Like Halloween a lot, quite love Hostel, think Saw is a bit of a masterpiece. I love The Ring. The Killers was probably the only horror I've seen recently that genuinely scared the shit out of me.

The film moment that traumatised me the most is the Diner scene in Mulholland Drive. It's not a horror film, but it's a briliantly terifying scene. The amazing soundtrack by Badalamenti makes it, and the fact the character reacts exactly the same as I did.

 

Most "horror films" don't tend to leave a huge mark on me. That said, I realised that I never really actively watch them (not that I wouldn't, given the chance).

 

I prefer psychological stuff more. Like Antichrist. That's more disturbing than horrific.

I recently started it again to try and finish it, got so far and got scared and stopped haha. It's the only film I know of that scares me to death, that damn fucking clown!

My sister also decided to watch IT in my presence, when I was about...8 I guess. Effectively traumatised me. I couldn't look at IT. If I saw IT it would scare the living bejeesus girl out of me. I remember fairly soon after watching it we were out at a restaurant. I popped next door (a video rental store) to choose a film to rent and I saw it, ran out shaking/crying/etc. So bad.

 

I only even got over it when I was like...15/16. My friend got me to pluck up the courage to look at the DVD in a library. I'm okay with it now. I blame Tim Curry. That was a terrifying performance and image....as apparent by all our terrifiedness.

 

It was a pretty big fear to those 8 or so years of my life actually. Seriously. Awful thing.

Edit;. Also, people online tend to have GIFs/avatars of it fairly frequently, and when I see it and it catches me off guard, my heart does still tend to skip a beat.

ReZ, you better have seen the original Psycho first. Otherwise, I'll never forgive you.

 

As for horror movies, I guess I've been really getting into them this year. There all extremely old though and a lot less 'jumpy scary'. Basically there's less 'cheap' scares. It's fair to admit that some of them wouldn't even be considered horror, but rather thrillers instead.

 

Anyway, actual recent movies that have just messed me up...all I can think of is the Grudge. Bloody TERRIFIED for weeks. Horrible. The Japanese are too good at making horror movies.

I haven't seen much recent horror movies unfortunately. Apart from Saw and a few other silly ones that I can't remember. The original Psycho actually had me a little scared at times, surprisingly.

I'd recommend the Japanese film Gozu by Miike Takashi.. It is more disturbing than scary. You probably wont have a good night's sleep after watching it.. Weirdest film ever made and there are things in that film that will never leave your mind, like the lactating old woman and the sex scene at the end where a man's hand comes out of the woman's vagina and grabs onto the guys penis..

Have you seen all of Ringu? I think it's the massive fourth wall breaking that scares chunks out of me.

 

I don't like horror films that go for jumps by being quiet and then pumping up the volume suddenly. It's cheap. I like slow build up and suspense - basically Alien.

I agree with the silence thing, but sometimes it can work well though I can't think of any examples now.

If you like suspense, buy some Alfred Hitchcock movies. "Master of Suspense"

I still love Blair Witch Project and make it a point to watch it every year around this time to put me in a Halloween mood.

 

The Exorcist (directors cut) is probably the scariest movie ive ever seen though. I remember watching it at a friend's house one night and the drive home was mortifying

I thought that was funny. I was sitting back thinking that's weird until he started licking his face and then I burst out laughing. The next scene was odd though. What is this movie about anyway?

 

Also, scariest movie I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot) is The Exorcist. I've only seen this recently and it terrified me and hardly any movies have ever done that. Some scenes, I was literally like "What....the.....".

Not so much a horror film, but Dutch film The Vanishing (Spoorloos) really scared me a lot afterwards.

I am not sure how many films he has made (just checked and he has made a lot), but I have watched a few of his films. I think films like Gozu and Happiness of the Katakuris, although meant to be amusing, are the most disturbing to me because they try to make nasty imagery into something that wants to make you smile.. That makes me more uncomfortable than something that is purely meant to be scary. I have avoided watching some of his films because of their bad taste.

 

Audition was ok. It was a bit more memorable than some other films.

I wasn't talking about Audition, it's just that when it comes to horror, it's one of my faves. When I said Gozu was Miike lite I was specifically thinking about his other stuff, like Visitor Q, which isn't even supposed to be scary or anything, and just works on so many levels. Fantastic, really.
