Ashley Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 So theres a house I live in and theres four of us. A wireless internet and a big HDTV in the living room and heres the plan; utilise it. So yeah. Wirless media sharing. Other than through a 360 (as I be on a Mac) any good products for it. Can only find two on PC World (this and a slightly cheaper Phillips). Can anyone reccomend some, or say if its worthwhile at all. (my biggest fear is as its streaming it may be slow and crap) Thanks
McPhee Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 You may as well install Windows on you're Mac for the money, £70 vs £150...
Ashley Posted December 27, 2007 Author Posted December 27, 2007 But I would still need to buy a 360. Plus the big question; is streaming as slow and crappy as it is on stuff like youtube?
Guest Jordan Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 Don't fucking bother. Streaming video unless in a program dedicated for it (Ie: A Media Centre Extender) you'll get clicking and pauses every so often that'll ruin the experience.
Ashley Posted December 28, 2007 Author Posted December 28, 2007 Cheers Jorde, back to my original HDMI dvd with USB plan...just need to find one now.
Jasper Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 If you're on Mac you could go for an Apple TV? wich is pretty good at streaming? I know, crappy solution (it'll cost you), but you could go for that. The only thing you need is: a mac, an Apple TV and a wireless network. Or you could try to connect a tiny computer to your TV and install iTunes on it? It allows for streaming from the other person's library (only streaming, though)
Emasher Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 And if you decided to go for a mac mini you could use front row and essentially have an apple TV that if you want to you could browse the web from, and if you needed to run any other server things like backups you could do that from the mini. Thats what I'm planing on doing anyway...
Jasper Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 i could've known that emasher would make it tooo apple... Be has a point, but you'de better get a windows media pc, since the can pull alot off, alot better. More formats supported, more compatible. And mac mini is overpriced.
Emasher Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 A mini PC wouldn't work as well with his Mac though. My solution isn't too apple, it only involves buying one apple product.
Ashley Posted December 28, 2007 Author Posted December 28, 2007 Yeah this price is getting way too much, it was just a passing thought. Thanks though.
Shorty Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 I stream audio and video wirelessly to my 360 with very little skipping except when you first start up a video file. If you haven't given up on the idea, Sling boxes are the core of media network sharing: http://www.slingmedia.com/
Jasper Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 A mini PC wouldn't work as well with his Mac though. My solution isn't too apple, it only involves buying one apple product. But you advice a) not an 'cheap' (Apple-terms) APpleTV b) a Mac (it's pretty expensive for what you get and what you need). But honestly shorty, I think there are cheap windows pc's out there that you can use as media center, even PC's that go as low as beneath €100.
Oli1983uk Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 here ya go ash, found this hope it helps! http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/129460/philips-dvp5960-upscaling-dvd-playe/all/deals/hot/
tapedeck Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 That's a nice piece of kit. I'd be suprised if we didn't see more and more of these types of prices next year. But a great, great find nonetheless! If anyone picks this up let us know how it is. Remember, it only upscales through HDMI though.
