AshMat Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 So i have around 15gb of music/videos on the hard drive of my old PC. I think the HDD it's all on is IDE, obviously the HDD in this PC is SATA-II. Best way of getting all those files onto my new pc?
Sanchez Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 Plug it in to your motherboard, transfer, done?
AshMat Posted November 24, 2007 Author Posted November 24, 2007 I did that. Plugged in what i think is the secondary HDD (though when i tried to turn the old one on without it in, it wouldn't start up...) and the PC wouldn't start up. Went into the black screen with the "start windows noramlly" "safe mode" etc options. Also, when i plugged it all back into the old one, the oldun doesn't startup anymore.. Is there a chance that i tried putting my main HDD in this pc by accident?
Shorty Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 If it's an old IDE HDD, have you set the jumpers to make the HDD a slave? Basically it's a bit of plastic you need to put in the right place on the end of the HDD which should be labelled on the drive itself. If you can't get your old HDD onto your new PC, wire up the PCs to a network/wireless network and transfer? Or use an iPod or something as a HDD?
AshMat Posted November 24, 2007 Author Posted November 24, 2007 I moved the jumpers to what i thought was slave the first time, and a different position the 2nd time. I only have a 6gb MP3, and around 14-18gb of music/videos.. plus the old one no longer turns on :/
Mr_Odwin Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 But something like this? http://www.ebuyer.com/product/118510
AshMat Posted November 25, 2007 Author Posted November 25, 2007 Hm, what's that thing Odwin? I get the feeling i might be able to snatch one temporarily from mum's work.
Mr_Odwin Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 It turns any old 3.5" ide drive into an external hdd. But you shouldn't really have to do that. If you can't get it working with your new comp's mobo, then if you can get your old comp up and running again, just burn several re-writeable DVDs or CDs.
steggy Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 I did that. Is there a chance that i tried putting my main HDD in this pc by accident? Try this again, but go into your BIOS and make sure the boot order is set to boot from a SATA drive first. Or at least make sure that the IDE drive is after the SATA drive. If one drive is IDE and the other SATA you shouldn't need to worry too much about Slave or Master. As that only applies to two drives attached to the same IDE cable. Your better off using "Cable Select" which should be automatic if there's only one drive on the IDE cable. Is the DVD drive in your new PC SATA or IDE?
AshMat Posted November 28, 2007 Author Posted November 28, 2007 The guys at my mum's work say they have a couple of external IDE HDD cases, i'm borrowing one of those. Problem solved now.
