Is Wii wasted potential?

Recommended Posts

I've owned a Wii from pretty close to the launch last year, but so far I've not seen anything of what I envisioned to be out by now.

I mean, where the hell are the shooters? The wiimote should make this the ultimate FPS-console of all time, but the only good shooter out yet is CoD3, which was out for the Wii's release, and to make matters worse, the Wii seems to be the only format not to get CoD4! The salvage I was hoping for was MP3:Corruption with multiplayer. Y'know, the multiplayer from MP2, for 16 or 32 players online, with the MP3 control scheme... God, I'm so desperate for a good shooter, that I'm willing to believe that Red Steel 2 will be worthy of my student-sallary! I mean, shooters have allways been great for Nintendo consoles. I remember both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark for the N64, and Timesplitters and Die Hard Vendetta for the Cube. My teacher once worked at Dice (I study games development at the university of Skövde), and on a lesson this week he talked about his career... When Dice were running out of cash, they decided to talk to different publishers, to make a deal about funding and the ones who were interrested in investing in the project were Microsoft, EA and Nintendo. My teacher was the one who was sent to talk to them, and he said that Nintendo wanted the game really badly for the GC, and the deal was close to going through, when my teacher called his bos who was like "Nintendo... We don't want this game shown next to Mario and Zelda, try with the others instead" (and thats how we got screwed on one of the best shooter franchises ever)...

Then there's the racers. Sure, the console has a really good controller to use for a wheel, but, seriously, where are the wheels? Y'know, with analogue pedals, a stick to shift with and force feedback? Not to mention the actual racing games... I mean, I allmost hoped for GT Wii to be the Nintendo equivelant to Gran Turismo, only with more fun tracks. As it turned out, it had all of the flaws that existed in the GC itteration: Too few cars (not to mention that EVERY SINGLE ONE was Japanese), technically crappy graphics, horrendous cel shading, short singleplayer mode, and according to some, bad controlls. I'm a racing nut, and I've only found salvage in the NFS games since the launch of the Cube. I tried to get Burnout 2 for the Cube about a year or two after release, but no store had it.

My question is, do you think that the Wii is wasted potential?

How the hell can you tell if a 1 year old console is wasted potential or not.

After one year, there should be AT LEAST one wheel for the console, and both good and exclusive shooters and racers should be announced. I mean, even Dreamcast had that!

It's a good point... Look at how long it has taken the 360 to get a decent library of games that are truly taking advantage of the console and even then its arguable as to the variety with many of the games shooters....

I think if your expecting a ton of shooters you've got the wrong console, although hopefully people will take notice of MP3's wonderful controls and start to try and emulate them...

Skövde

That explains it.

To be honest though, wait until this generation is over. Until then, you can't tell which console was used to its full potential.

Yay Wheels!

As for racers, you have Excite Truck which is awesome and as for shooter you'll have MoH:H2 and MP3. That enough?

I think you've really just got to be patient, it's been discussed a million times but the Wii has got off to a very slow start, and you can't really blame it. Every publisher in the gaming world ignored it (Except Ubisoft) cause the GameCube was a failure, and now it's a success, they're all relocating their resources. We're only beginning to see the games that are a result of this.

Anyway, if you want a good shooter then look at Medal of Honour: Heroes 2, it's been praised for controls, 32 player online, pretty solid graphics. Developers can't just desecrate good games when they need them, so if you're honestly expecting good games to come for no reason, you're gonna have to get your waiting cap ready.

There are a few realistic racers announced, non of them I know alot about but to be honest it's hardly a genre which suits the Wii. I'm sure someone will try something good on it though.

Excitetruck beats the crap out of Motorstorm, that's a fact, but ET isn't the kind of racer I'm looking for. I'm looking for something along the lines of PGR (since Bizarre are free from MS now, we might get MSR 2 as a sort of equivelant).

MoH:H2 hasn't been released yet, and knowing that game series, I've got big difficulties to see how it could possibly beat CoD3. Yeah, online multiplayer, really great. How about good contols, and an interresting singleplayer campaign, and at least a slight bit of realism?

Of course, you can't EXPECT there to be a good game in this or that genre, especially not the Wii, as a lot of people were sceptical about it to start off with, but now we can so clearly see that developers are turning over to the Wii, announcing this game and that game. Where the heck are the racer and shooter announcements? I mean, for all of the last generation we were craving a GTA-ish game. All we got were the True Crime games... And for the Wii? Godfather, Driver, Scarface, and maybe even some game I've forgotten, all within the firts year of the console. I mean, why aren't developers equally eager to port for example Black for the Wii:

Preferrably I'd see some really good first or second party games exclusivelly for the console in those genres, but knowing Nintendo that'll be unlikelly. We can hope that now that the MP trilogy is finished, Retro Studios will do something else based on the same engine...

It's possibly too early to tell...

With the Wii being a huge success and Nintendo repairing old 3rd party wounds - time will reveal all. With many developers becoming third party due to higher development costs, we will probably see more variation in software on a Nintendo home console since the early 1990's. I don't think that Wii itself is wasted potential. I think the developers are wasting their own creative potential by limiting their imaginations in the face of cold harsh cash. But that will always occur. (Business sense).

Maybe Wii ware will change this "potential" factor. Then you can go free wheeling around the sitting room.

P.S

If you bought a Nintendo console in hope that everything will come along as you predict/hope you own the wrong machine. But within that notion lies half the excitment buddy.

You ahve to understand something: developers main concern with the Wii is taking advantage of the controller right now and it'll take time to see some kind of games. It's not like 360 had a gazillion awesome games of every genre in it's first year. Hell, to me most good 360 games are so generic I don't even care about them.

The thing is, when you buy a console you have to know what to expect, and Wii clearly wasn't the type to have lots of racing sims and shooters.

And fyi MoH2 is shaping up VERY WELL.

Also, why port Black and not port Godafther and Scarface? They're all good games.

Also: there's ferrarri challenge coming up, don't know if iti'll be any good though.

There aren't really many Third Party titles on the horizon that seem to be taking advantage of the Wii's potential (except Zack and Wiki of course), too many know that they can try and succeed at making a solid title but in the end unless it's a big IP (ie Final Fantasy) or it is marketed well then it isn't going to fair well against Nintendo's own titles and this scares them away from making an effort and therefore just churn out mediocre crap (I'm looking at you Ubisoft).

Lets just hope the Third Party sales are more like DS and less like GCN so they aren't scared away and some of them actually continue to bother with the Wii and eventually produce titles that are of a better quality than even Nintendo's own (ie Resident Evil 4).

Third party sales have been highly impressive thus far, they pale in comparison to Nintendo's products, but so does the quality. When you consider the budget some of these games were made on, and the timespan it took, the developers really are looking at a potentially huge profit on the Wii with no financial disaster if it flops.

I can't understand why no one wants to really try push the FPS genre on the Wii. Red Steel sold 1 million copies, that proves there is a huge market there. Saying that, if anyone is going to truly make a killer FPS I don't think we've given them enough time to get it into a state that is showable yet, I think Red Steel 2 might be what we're waiting for though.

Well MoH:2 will kick ass. You've got a game with the best FPS controls on Wii (better than MP3), its running at 60fps AND you get 32 players online!

You also have to remember that most developers were shocked the wii sold so well, so it's going to take more than 1 year for them to get big, epic games out. It's different with ps3 and 360 because they had good estimates on what would sell well on the consoles.

Wii is still fixing what the GameCube broke. Games just can't be too far away. Your point is pretty valid, although you can't want realistic racers, Nintendo consoles have never been the platform.

There's a way to solve that problem

Buy the Wii later, when all the potential is used ;)

Works for me lol

Yes, i think the main point that we should focus first is: The Wii have only one year...

Actually, it doesn't even have one year at all.

I mean... developers don't even know the true potential of Wii, in very aspects... how can they do games that made use of it's all potential?! C'mon...

It's why a console age differs to 4-5 years. I mean, I am a little bored too with the actual library, but i think great things are yet to coming for Wii, in a soon future:

Zack and Wiki (for me, the first good 3rd party game); Metroid Prime: Corruption (it's gonna be awesome - considering that still wasn't launch in europe); Super Mario Galaxy (i'm even not seeing anykind of videos and info, so i can enjoy better the game. A clear game that can win GOTY); and a lot more.

Look at GameCube. I think you can see the potential of this console in one game: Resident Evil 4. It was needed 4 or 5 years to see GameCube's potential, in my point of view.

Chill out dude. ;)

Before looking at Wii, look at PS3, for example. Even PSP... doesn't have "awesome" games, in my point of view. Anyway.... We will see Wii in full power, don't worry.

For the type of racing games you want you're better off getting a 360. And for shooters you're better off getting a PC.

The PC is a pretty good platform for racers too, and has some top quality gaming peripherals to boot - the Logitech G25 Racing Wheel is fantastic! Expensive, yes, but worth every penny it if you're a fan of racing games.

Can't agree there, although the Wii is successful financially, I don't think the gamecube broke anything. It had some amazing games, while having far less gimmicky games.

"Gimmicky" games are bound to exist with new control types. It happened with DS too and now it's the most amazing console out there.

Maybe, but for a while at least we have to put up with forced awkward control schemes for bad games until the real good ones come out. Sometimes motion sensing is good, but I'd rather have a choice.

I think it was more to do with third party relations and support. Third parties pretty much shafted Nintendo during the GameCube days, it has the smallest userbase, a reputation of not selling third party games, a limited demographic and Nintendo generally seemed to have patchy relations.

The Wii is fixing that now, with Nintendo more supportive to developers, far cheaper developement costs then rival consoles, the largest and most diverse userbase, and plenty of evidence that third party games sell.

I hope that's what he meant, anyway.

The thing is though, even if the gamecube had no 3rd party support whatsoever it would still be worth buying, simply for 1st party. I think the term 'no 3rd party' was flung around far too often, while discarding the fact that there were tons of great first party games often better than random 3rd party games.

I'm not saying I didn't really enjoy games like RE4 and ToS, just that it was still an incredible console for me at least on 1st party alone.

3rd party support the Wii has loads! In America in the lead up to Xmas the xbox 360 has about 70 games coming out the playstation 3 has less than that - the Wii has about 140! I shit you not!

So 3rd part support on the Wii - theres loads, admittedly a lot of it is crap but there you go!: peace:
