My Buttons are Magic! Posted May 28, 2007 Author Posted May 28, 2007 in the music department in our school we use macs.. and theres a big shiny white imac (lmao - like the old leg cream) or something...and its lovely to use...
KKOB Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 wow - the amount you can get off for student discount from apple is unbelievable It really is, and not only do you get 15% off anything Apple made in the store but you can also get 3 years extended warranty for about £50 instead of about £250. I got it just to put my mind at rest as i was spending so much money, that IF anything went wrong or i did something stupid, i could just go in and get it repaired and i'll have my macbook pro back all shiny and well again.
My Buttons are Magic! Posted May 28, 2007 Author Posted May 28, 2007 im still not 100% - ahh well ive got till 28th september to figure it out
McPhee Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 What course are you going to be studying? This matters because you might need to run certain programs for you're course, not all specialist software appears on Mac (in fact, the vast majority doesn't) Also you're University might well provide you with an MSDN subscription (might be worth phoning and asking) in which case it would give you Office et all for free. I don't think the OS X version of Office is included in this (maybe someone can confirm this?) Other than that a Mac might be the best solution, laptop-wise they are great (maybe even the best) machines!

I think this one peice of software i may or may not have to use next year isn't available for mac, but at worst, i can just use the Uni computers for that software and put the results from it into my idisk/memory stick. Most people on my course don't actually bother installing the software we could get, they just use the uni pcs-then again Biology isn't really a heavily computer focussed degree, least not in this year.
Marshmellow Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 I believe there is a program that lets you put XP (not sure on Vista...) on a Mac. So if you like MAC computers and can get a good deal but still want to use Windows Programs that would be the way to go.

Parallels allows you to use most software-but not games i don't think-and run XP or Vista in tandem to OS X. Boot Camp is another way but with this free software you just install XP or Vista on part of your hard drive and boot straight into it. So you can basically run XP or Vista on a Mac if you just like the look of Macs.
