That's a shame Sounds like it's not worth my time in that case... It's a pity because the core gameplay does seem to have a lot of potential...
-
That's kind of the impression I got from the demo... It doesn't seem to have much depth to it, as you end up basically doing the same thing all throughout (see an enemy, tag it three times, hold R to destroy it and move on), but I do appreciate how fresh the core gameplay feels - it's definitely something different as far as run-and-guns go! The level design also doesn't seem particularly interesting... very very basic... nor does it seem to have much in the way of environmental interaction in general... This kind of game CAN work well under those design restrictions though... As long as the enemies and bosses are well designed, interesting, varied, decently challenging and that there are a lot of unique ones... Alien Soldier took a similar approach after all and it is one of the greatest 2D run-and-gun action game ever made! Now I'm not expecting something on that level here, but I really just want to know if the enemy/boss encounter design is strong enough to really carry the gameplay here and to keep it fresh enough to not let the game run out of steam before it's done...

Oh hey guys, for those of you wondering how the DS VC emulator would handle games that require the DS to be closed/put into sleep mode to progress... Look what I found in the manual... Sorted Yeah I noticed this, really really annoying. Hope they fix it!

Oh BTW, just wanted to chime in on the "input lag issue" that some people seem to be having with the N64 games... I'm having nothing of the sort, be it on the TV or on the Gamepad. I'm pretty certain that if you're noticing input lag, then it's your TV causing it (which means that it's gonna affect everything, not just N64 games - you're probably noticing it in SM64 because it's such a twitch game with precise control) My TV has an input lag of 16ms (exactly the same as the Gamepad) and I'm noticing no noticeable input lag at all. So if you're noticing it, try activating Game Mode if your TV has it or try looking for another solution (I know that some Samsung TVs have a feature which decreases input lag if you rename your HDMI source name to "PC" for instance...) Pretty sure it always did (I remember getting annoyed when I saw it the first time - They always had the one central Worldwide NintendoWiFiConnection.com website and no regional variants back in the day - that site actually used to have some cool stat tracking going on! You used to be able to see replays of matches in games like Metroid Prime Hunters or certain custom emblems that were made in MKDS - sort of like what they did for the Pokemon GTS website for the DS/3DS Pokemon games but not quite as detailed) Yeah, MKDS is a real engineering marvel! It looks significantly better than MK64 and runs at over twice the FPS to boot! Just a shame that DS games don't get the same high resolution rendering treatment that N64 games do on Wii U (from my understanding though, it's much more difficult and problematic to do high res rendering on DS games than most other emulated 3D consoles due to the weird way it renders graphics, so I can understand them not doing it here)

I've played a demo of it before... But I don't really have the money to buy it right now :p

To be fair, DK64 (and Rare's titles in general) are a special case where the NTSC versions were actually timed to match the original source PAL version... So the gameplay speed and audio timing is actually correct in the PAL version... It just runs 5FPS slower on Wii U than it's US/JPN Wii U counterpart... (and does suffer from some repeated frames on Wii U because of the unfortunate way that they've chosen to handle 50hz content on Wii U) It still runs much smoother than the original PAL or NTSC N64 carts regardless though (which often dropped into single digit FPS and very rarely ran at anything over 15-20...) In short, having owned 3 out of 4 of the various versions of DK64 in existence, the order of best to worst version of DK64 goes thus... 1, US/JPN Wii U VC 2, EU Wii U VC 3, PAL N64 DK64 cart (more or less the same speed as the US version but it runs in a higher resolution, as all properly optimised PAL N64 games did) 4, NTSC N64 DK64 cart

How? Why do you think they came up with the Circle Pad design in the first place? (The answer is because it's flat/non protruding BTW, which means that it can't be pushed in ) Plus the whole separating screens is kind of a huge deal that can't be designed around... No. If the NX handheld is capable of running certain Wii U games in 480p, it'll only be select ones which support Off TV play and don't really take advantage of the Gamepad's unique functionality/design at all like DKCTF, most 3rd party titles or Hyrule Warriors (well, outside of the co-op mode for the latter, which wouldn't be accessible anyway since you wouldn't be actually able to connect a Wii U Pro Controller to the handheld :p)
-
Nope. Won't work. The Gamepad screen needs to be able to be moved independently from the main screen (also the aspect ratio is no doubt going to be all wrong for the bottom screen - I seriously doubt that they're gonna be able to fit a 16 x 9 screen on the bottom while keeping it compact). That's the main thing that separates the Gamepad/TV combo from the DS/3DS two screen setup - the fact that the two screens are not physically bound together... Also the handheld would need clickable analog sticks to accommodate the full set of controls and there's no way to do that while keeping the two screen format/clamshell design. Not to mention that I doubt that it would have the necessary grunt to handle rendering two (perhaps 3, if it does end up supporting S3D for native NX handheld games) 854x480 displays simultaneously... No, the top screen will effectively be the Gamepad screen itself. The bottom screen will be something different - so it'll probably only support Wii U titles that have Off TV play built-in, that do not make use of every available button. Likewise, splitscreen multiplayer games aren't gonna really work either (especially not the ones that really take advantage of assymettric play, like Nintendo Land or NSMBU or Wii U Party or Mario Party 10, or Kirby & The Rainbow Curse)

He'll probably end up playing it eventually anyway. 99% of the time, I'm the one who ends up introducing him to new stuff anyway and I'm looking forward to getting BoI on Wii U (though he was the one who convinced me to give Monster Hunter a go back when MH3 came out on Wii, so he does have that under his belt at least!) For the record, I have played the original version of BoI on PC and didn't like it because it was running in Flash and just didn't feel good at all. I've been waiting for the obviously inevitable Wii U/3DS version of BoI Rebirth for a while

Yup! It doesn't even have to emulate the GCN or Wii to run them. As long as it has at least Wii level spec (at least a single core PowerPC 750CL variant running at at least 729mhz, GPU specs at least matching the Wii's Hollywood GPU etc) all pre Wii U games will run natively on it, out of the box from day 1. I don't think that the NX handheld will actually match the Wii U's specs, but it doesn't actually have to. It'll probably be basically a downclocked version of the current Wii U, but considering that it'll probably only end up having to target widescreen 480p (854 x 480p) for its main display, it will probably still end up being able to play everything out of the box from day 1 anyway (so it might even be able to run a large chunk of Wii U titles just fine, just at a lower resolution and maybe with a few visual effects turned off - obviously anything that needs the Gamepad/TV dual screen combo or Wii Remote would be a no go though, for obvious reasons). The NX Console however will probably end up being a turbo charged Wii U, not unlike how the Wii was a turbo charged GCN. They'll probably up the clocks and the core/shader unit count for the CPU/GPU and increase the RAM while keeping the general architecture almost the exact same (thereby allowing for full native BC with everything Wii U, including the VC, the Wii/GCN download releases and all existing accessories )
-
Sadly it doesn't look like there's any anamorphic widescreen option A shame really because a few N64 games did support it (like DK64...)
-
Oh yeah! I totally forgot about that! Cheers! I'll have to download it when I get home! I hear that the 3DS version isn't great in comparison to the Wii U one though...
-
Two more VC games just got rated by the Australian Board! Well well well! Looks like Konami is still digging deeper into their classic library! (I wonder if it'll still support the Zapper... Don't see why not...)

Good lord the Super Mario 64 Miiverse community is comedy gold! 19 years on and this game still delivers the laughs

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore (16th Jan)

Not to mention that the wording in the statement that Atlus made... ... would suggest that something went wrong during development and IS pulled out - leaving them to make something themselves that would carry the spirit of IS' original vision... -

I can't wait to read the eventual Iwata Asks for this one! What the hell happened with this project!? This is clearly not the game that they set out to make originally... Intelligent Systems are seemingly barely involved at all anymore! I can absolutely see why we had the radio silence for so long now... This game's development absolutely smacks of Metal Gear Rising/Conker's Bad Fur Day syndrome! Of course, both of those games turned out amazing in the end, so I still have high hopes for this one, even if there's barely anything resembling Fire Emblem in there anymore! -
Yeah, I wanna give them a try. I know that they're meant to be garbage, but I still would like to give them a punt, if only for a laugh

Oh BTW! You must have JavaScript enabled on your device to view Miiverse posts that have been embedded in a website. View post in Miiverse Jetpack is still in DK64!!! Could this mean that other Rareware games might actually end up being possible? Me too. My DS VC buy list will be pretty selective though. No multiplayer focused games (what's the point?) and only games that would really benefit from it. N64 buys will be generally limited to either 60hz only or Rareware games (any Rare games that get released will end up running so much better than their original cart counterparts anyway!) If the 60hz N64 release list turns out to be really small though as I originally suspected (most N64 games got a FIGS localisation), I might have to consider importing... Super Mario 64 is a pleasant exception thankfully! Here's hoping that they're mostly sensible about this... Though of course all this could be avoided if they would just let us pick which bloody version we wanted! (Come on! Please don't lump us with 50hz Paper Mario and Waverace 64!!!)
-
DS games have them as well! Anyway, I should let you guys know that Mario 64 is the 60hz US version (YES!!!! ) but DK64 is the 50hz PAL version (still runs better than the N64 cart ever did though, PAL or NTSC, but it's gonna be inferior to the US Wii U VC version...) I'm really surprised that they jumped right into DK64... That game is quite the challenge to emulate properly because it is one of those titles that made use of the N64's dreaded "Microcode" (The Wii wasn't able to run any game that made use of them, nor any games that didn't just use Nintendo's standard API code - hence why the release list was so small). The fact that they have that working here (assuming that they have Controller Pak support working this time around!) means that they'll be able to release a much wider selection of N64 titles this time around! And as it seems that they're not necessarily sticking to the hard and fast "FIGS localisation = 50hz" rule, which gives me hope that we might actually see a fair few 60hz releases after all... ... I fear for Paper Mario though (OoT and MM might actually be 60hz versions though because 60hz PAL versions do exist - they made 60hz PAL versions for the Zelda Collectors Discs on the GCN) Either way, it's good to finally have suspend saves with N64 games! I've wanted it for so long! The games look good in HD as well (not massively improved over the 480p of the Wii VC, but it is noticeably better) And proper rumble support this time will be nice as well. I just wish that it supported the GCN Controller adapter As for DS? I'm pleasantly surprised at how well MKDS and Wario Ware Touched hold up on a HDTV! They feel great to use in Large Screen mode as well! (touch screen focused games like Kirby's Canvas Curse and Trauma Center are gonna feel great using that mode! ) Bit of a shame that you can't do button remapping at all though (I can understand why they'd limit it, because of how important the standard button layout is to making DS games work, but it's still a bit of a shame that I can't at least swap L/R and ZL/ZR) - and of course the lack of any wireless/online multiplayer is a huge bummer, especially in a game like Mario Kart DS As far as single player games go though? It's pretty great all round! I can't wait to play through the DS Castlevania trilogy on here! (And suspend saves are gonna be a godsend for those games, as well as stuff like Metroid Prime Pinball!)

GIMME 60HZ N64 VC OR GIVE ME DEATH!!!! I literally don't care about anything else right now! (Well, downloadable GCN games would be nice too - but only if the PAL releases are fixed to support 480p this time around )
-
That's fair enough. Not everyone is into speed running and it is kind of the whole point of MSF :p Unless you're into trying to get the best par times, MSF probably won't really appeal to you (Personally though, I'm not the biggest fan of it and I do like to speed run - I just think that the level design is a bit scattershot and not as conductive to speed running as it ought to be, too much reliance on trial & memorisation and not enough on execution for my liking - but if you have a better memory than I, which is not hard to beat really, then you'll probably enjoy it more )

I still take issue with this list every time you post it... Why aren't we likely to get Tinstar or Super Mario RPG? It's not like we haven't gotten region exclusive games released world wide before... And with SMRPG, it's not like we haven't gotten it released on the VC before, nor did S-E refuse to work out a deal with Capcom to get the original SNES version of Breath of Fire released on the Wii U VC... Also with the Zapper being supported on the NES VC now, why is Superscope still a no go? It's effectively the same thing... (in fact, emulation wise, it's actually easier to do since the way it works is closer to how the Wii Remote does than the Zapper is) Likewise, why do you never highlight Super Tennis? AFAIK there are no real licensing issues that could theoretically get in the way of a re-release... As for the rest? As it stands? I agree that the rest are currently unlikely (though why they never seem to want to re-release the SNES version of Wario's Woods is a complete mystery to me!), but Super Mario All Stars has a better chance than the rest because they have the option of only making it available to people who have bought all 4 NES games on the eShop or they can offer it for a higher price (the reason why it never came out on the Wii VC was because they had no way to do bundles or discounts or anything like what they can do now on the Wii U eShop and releasing it in a standard way would've completely de-valued the original NES versions of the SMB games - hence why they released the VC version of All Stars at retail instead). And as for your NES list... Again, why is Pro Wrestling not highlighted? And why is Mother not highlighted when it famously has a fully complete English localisation that was unreleased? Also aren't Gyromite and Stack-up both playable without ROB? IIRC, you could have a second player (with a second controller) substitute for ROB's functions in those games... Your list is also missing To The Earth as a Zapper title...

Time for N64 VC games!? Remember Shibata, no 60hz = no buy! I don't even care that much about the games being rendered in 1080p, 60hz support OR NO DEAL! You have ONE job here! DO NOT mess this up!
