I think its because theres an 'upwards' force, and a 'downwards' force and together they keep us stable or something. I dunno, I could be wrong.

hmm we had to do something similar for our second lesson of english literature when i started college. I brought the Raven by poe just because i thought it was so terribly unorignal. My favorite poem however is probably the tell tale heart by poe, except its more of a short story than a poem.

I was reading back through the last few pages and reading what everyone had written and when i came to this I began to think. Like thecreepingmess said, we didn't exist before we were born. We didn't begin in heaven or hell then pop into our mothers stomachs and started to grow. It wasn't depressing or upsetting because we didnt even have the capability to think about not being alive. How come can't it be that way after we're dead too? Its really hard to think about not being able to think and feel and move, but if you think about it, you can't have an opinion about it if you don't even exist. If we didnt 'exist' before we were born, then whose to say we dont 'exist' after we're dead?

In science last year we learned about people trying to find other life in the universe, and a group of people sent out signals into outerspace, but because of how sound travels in space its going to take a long time, and if something does hear and responds, it'll take equally as long for us to reach it. Im not sure exactly, but I think our teacher said we've been waiting for a return for the last 10 years or something.
