If Miltank is in this game, I buy it, promise!

Nintendo will team up with Pixar to create the ultimate animated Nintendo movie. This is de real reason there's no story in Smash 4: all the material is used to make one big connected Universe movie. Today's kids will love the movie to death (like the Cars, Planes hype), Amiibo will crush the succes of Skylanders because of this. Nintendo open up two amusement parks: one in the US and one in Japan. Nintendo realise they have the potential of Disney and should do so much more than just videogames.

Ok, last time I predicted 4 out of 6, I think this time it will be harder. My guess: Palutena ZS Samus Greninja Olimar Ganondorf Bowser Jr After that wave: Mr Game & Watch Jigglypuff Duck Hunt Duo R.O.B. Falco Dr. Mario Dark Pit I'm not sure if they'll release Mewtwo and Mii...

It could also mean that the developers want to implement voicechat and trying to get it to work but haven't figured out yet? Or They have figured out a way but haven't had approval yet? There are a lot of possible explanations for not mentioning it (yet). They showed a game currently in development, you will never know everything about what a game will have on offer until it releases. Then again, I can understand the feeling of frustration when you so desperately want to know if something is in or not. Especially when the past has proven it was more often less than more of what you wanted.

Well, It seems I'm the only one prefering the Smash variants over the Super Mario ones. There's more action in their poses. Maybe I'll buy some when they're on offer though. On the other hand, once I buy one, I want all of them... Smash series 5 looks great! I expected Pillar and Palutena before Wario and Lucina though... I'll have to find my original prediction... Ah, there it is! 4 out of 6

What's the best stream to watch this?

I like the way this discussion rolls on, a lot of good points made from different angles without personal attacks! Hope we manage to keep it like this : peace: On topic: As a fan I hope there will be more variety As a consumer I hope the prices will be lower so I can buy all of them As an adult I know they are a business and both subjects above and Nintendo's decisions regarding those are not based on my personal preferences When I discuss this topic with my mates who don't own a WiiU, it usually goes along the following line: - It doesn't have (for example): FIFA, COD, Halo, Assassins Creed, Minecraft, Diablo, etc. - I argue "what if they released a comparable game with their own franchises glued to it" (for example): Metroid, Zelda, F-Zero, Starfoxs? - That would be very cool, I love the more "serious" Nintendo franchises! But still, I wouldn't buy a WiiU because it has no (see earlier third party franchises) I seriously doubt Nintendo currently CAN or WANT to grow into that segment. It seems that getting third party aboard could be the only way to get there, and even then, people already own the consoles where those third party games are coming to. So why buy a Wii U? I think they currently want to focus on their console to be the secondary console for "third party gamers" which offers something else to their Xbox or Playstation. They tried, it didn't work out because the early adaptors didn't buy enough third party software AND not enough WiiU hardware. Now try to keep the current owners aboard until the next generation, every new consumer is a bonus. Try to persuade consumers that the Wii U offers something different and fun.

On the other hand, if Nintendo want to expand their user base, I think it would be wise for them to cater to those who aren't attracted by Mario, Pokemon, Wii Fit, Donkey, Kirby, Yoshi, Smash and Kart. Focus on what franchises/genres are popular and try to stick your underused franchises to those mechanics. Like: Minecraft is popular, why not combine the mechanics of that game with an underused mascot and add some Nintendo magic/twist to it. SportSIMS, FPS's, MMORPG's, Stealth Adventures, etc. I think that if they want to expand the user base, this is what they should aim for. I don't need all of their games to be aimed at my preferences, I'll just pick those that I like

When you look at this list, none op these franchises appear on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_game_franchises That's the reason they aren't handled as a priority. It's too bad, as they represent certain genres which aren't available (enough) on the current Nintendo platforms...

Haha, thanks for that, you got my imagination run wild! They should make a Lost Vikings (but 3D) type of game featuring "forgotten/under appreciated" enemies. Every character has his own unique mechanics; Birdo: egg projectiles/ranged attacks Mouser: bombs/explosives to expose hidden stuff and blow up hard to reach enemies. Waluigi: annoying yelling to stun enemies and break glass Wart: bubbles to entrap certain enemies/projectiles/etc Petey Piranha: chomping through certain terrain/walls And so on Mario is the end-boss, defending Peach's Castle while using fire flowers and all other powerups which you need to prevent him from grabbing.

Pikachu's down B won't work, they tweaked it after Brawl. It's now coming from an onscreen stormcloud instead of from unlimited heights

squids who can't swim....?

Edit: sorry, was too late to the party, discussions already ended

Does anyone else feel the initial craze is calming down? A very good thing for me and I hope future releases are a little bit more spread. Prefer smaller waves, say four new ones a month. I'm also quite curious when and what characters get announced for wave 5 and further down the line.

Yes, that's a really big part of the Amiibo factor: there's quite alot of characters that probably won't be available in another statue form...

Brand loyalty is indeed not very smart, but you can't ignore that a huge part of (especially the teenagers) segment is VERY brand loyal. All those flamewars between Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony fans are not because anybody can truly proof one consoles dominance over all others. It's the same with iOS vs Android, sometimes really tiresome because you can't win a discussion about taste, you can only endlessly discuss it That's when I usually stop discussing; when people get offencive/defensive in regards to a difference in taste or preference. A little bit of respect, nuance and kindness makes for a much more friendly discussion. : peace: Jingle bells, jingle bells, lalalala and so on

That's what I mean yes, I find it worrying. Nintendo (to me!) are at their best when they make a unique combination between their hardware and software. But that's also what makes it difficult for third party developers to develop for their platforms. The day they become third party developers themselves will make me feel sad. But sometimes I think they eventually will have to in order to survive in gaming. That, or they really need to broaden their markets (like movies, amusementparks, tv series, toys and music)

Haha, sorry, I see that I described what I meant a little confusing: I meant gamers who love Nintendo games. Our generation basicaly had the choice between Nintendo and Sega. So we grew up with loving one or the other (or both even). Nintendo didn't form that same connection with later generations because Sony (and later also Microsoft) connected better with those (especially teenagers). Add to that that a lot of us older gamers also saw many benefits on the other two platforms and some even completely abandoned Nintendo. Their quirky image with a focus on local multiplayer and fun with the family is getting less and less popular. Especially overhere in the West. That doesn't mean their next console will aim for the larger group of gamers. I think that's a decision they made a long time ago: we are good in what we do, let's keep doin that and try to protect that smaller piece of the pie. Not everybody wants a sportscar, some like to drive in an oldtimer

It's a part of the gamer community. I guess a part that's getting smaller and smaller. Which I really find a shame by the way. Of course consumers buy what they want or like and everybody has his/her own unique taste. I have a Wii U, PS3, PC, 3DS, PSP, iPad and also like oldschool boardgames. I'm used to finding good things in a lot of different platforms for many years now. Of course it would be nice to have one platform for all those different types of entertainment. I just think that if Nintendo try to follow the same strategy as Playstation or Microsoft it would become the nail to their coffin. Three is too much in that segment, you see that even already with only two and Microsoft struggling to catch up with Sony this generation, that's not without reason. Imagine if Nintendo also lanched a powerhouse, I think that they would be in a far worse position than they are now. That's at least how I think about this, not trying to be defensive or offensive at all : peace:

I think that not even throwing money and be on par or even better than the competition spec-wise will bring Nintendo's next console in first place. It has to do with image: Nintendo is catering for another demographic than bot Playstation and Microsoft do. And that's fine right? I know it's a bit shit when you like both experiences as I don't see that happen on one system. If you like fish more than you like meat, why go to a butcher?

Oh, how I love the smell of Christmas in this thread

I wasn't claming that the Wii U sells like hot cakes. I just tried to make my point that the huge group of Sony/XBox gamers is largely not the demographic that Nintendo aimes for with their strategy. They clearly cater to a group of consumers that likes the more warm, lighthearted and familyfriendly games. Even if that group of consumers is a lot smaller than the demographic that prefers games with a more serious/darker undertone, it doesn't mean that they don't exist. Am I right in thinking you want Nintendo to aim for the same demographic as Sony/MS do? And last point: you took only one quote out of my message, what did you think of the rest? I'm only interested in a serious discussion with sound argumentation, not trying to go to war with anybody : peace:

Of course specs matter, you only get massive thirdparty support when you are equal to Sony/Microsoft. Even bettering them would be a giant risk and not a smart move at all. But that's also the reason we will never see this happen (I think). Nintendo follows their blue ocean strategy: "We don't wan't to do more or better of the same, we wan't to do something different." Avoiding shark water so to speak. They can't and don't want to compete in that way, they want to offer something different, catering to another demographic. They tried it once with the Gamecube (but with smaller reverse-burned DVD's) as that was the highest spec console of that generation, and that didn't work out at all for Nintendo. If you don't feel happy about the current situation and support/type of games, you should really switch to another console, have a second one or a PC. Nintendo is not gonna change and a lot of people are very, VERY, happy with that. But of course some people won't find what they want and need to go to a competitor for their gaming needs. I just don't understand why so many people don't see this...

By the way, Duck Hunt is far too cheap. I've played that game for more than 1000 hours and still haven't finished it!
