Well I settled on a nice wee Samsung N140 from Comet for £300. Does exactly everything I wanted it to do and to my surprise Windows 7 Starter is not as annoying as I first thought it would of been. Delighted with my choice. Thanks for all the tips and help folks.

one thing I was wondering about the Toshiba laptop I linked previously and have re-linked below, is the processor quite good for multi-tasking? I am reading that it is only 1 core, does this make a huge difference? http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1080722074.1259880136@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdkadeimkddlmfcflgceggdhhmdfoj.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=642252&category_oid=-36730

I seem to be edging towards the Acer Ferrari down to the spec for the price. Any previous experience with Acer? Would you recommend Acer?
-
here is more info on the specs of the netbook http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/12425381/Acer-Ferrari-One-AMD-Athlon-X2-L310-1-2GHz-2GB-250GB-11-6-Windows-7-Home-Premium-Netbook/Product.html CD/DVD drive is not something I would miss as it is barely used and I have a spare external one. So far all the laptops I have looked at do not include a optical drive though, possibly reason for the thin nature of the laptops.

I really got to stop looking at laptops :P what do people think of this? http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/598038/ACER-FO200-312G25N/tab/specification I somehow quite like it and feel you get a lot for your money, whats peoples opinions?

I never expected you to go back on your words leetpants :p Basically this is what I am looking for from a laptop: Surf the web, watch occasional video, my music, the heaviest program would be Photoshop or Inventor and also possibly play the Sims on it. That is in general what I would want from a laptop, something mobile and long battery as well to help with uni etc. My current laptop I can get about 2 and half hours from if I am lucky and is also on the large side. Overall would you recommend just sticking with my laptop, the toshiba or possibly a netbook? Thanks again leetpants.
-
ok...now looking at a new angle for my current problems with my laptop...I feel it is on the big side for uni and thats my reason for looking ultra mobile. Would I be better going for a netbook? How about this? http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1327109540.1259516691@@@@&BV_EngineID=cceiadeimhjgjgjcflgceggdhhmdfog.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=641083&category_oid= Would it run things like Photoshop or Inventor? Thank you

thanks leetpants. Generally I am trying to go for a laptop around the 13.3" size as my current one is 15.6" and I really want something smaller and has exceptional battery life. This is my current model: http://www.trustedreviews.com/laptops/review/2008/10/30/Medion-Akoya-S5610-15-4in-Notebook-PC/p1 I would be looking for a laptop which is slightly better but smaller and better battery. Or would you recommend just upgrading to Windows 7 and sticking with what I have?

a while back I was seriously considering a MacBook but after many discussions on here and some deep thought I decided against it down to compatibility issues. Yesterday I was just searching through PC World and seen this laptop: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0993929291.1259348670@@@@&BV_EngineID=cceeadeimehfgmecflgceggdhhmdfnn.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=538420&category_oid=-36730 what do people think? any good? or any other recommendations? I ideally want a mobile laptop that is reasonable price and kind of mid range spec...not really a gamer but do run programs like Autodesk Inventor and Photoshop. Thanks to anyone.

I agree, was really looking for something like HUGE and then we got hit with our iPhone/Touch has more games than DS and PSP then followed by the "big revelation" that the nano now has a video camera....call me disappointed On topic though I have been doing some digging and I am wondering if someone would be kind enough to explain the main benefits of Windows 7 over Vista as personally I have never had one problem with Vista.
-
Right now the only thing stopping me from taking your advice is what programs work on Mac. However from what I have found out most of my programs do work which is making me want to move. The only thing holding me back is really Windows 7...is it as good as Mac OSX? I don't even know if anyone will know yet
-
I know one thing...if I am going to bug a mac it will be before I qualify otherwise I would be throwing money away. I wonder if anyone knows of any Windows 13" laptops with similar specs for a lot cheaper than the 13" Macbook Pro?
-
See I really don't mind forking out over £1000 on a laptop as long as I know it is going to last a good few years and will still be quite competitive with the spec. I understand if I buy say a £400 laptop more than likely it will be completely out of date come Christmas/early 2010. Do you really get the 3 years apple care for free? I read it was like £200 Proberly the best for me to do is to take my laptop into an Apple Store and have a chat with one of the advisers to see if they can answer questions about some of my software. I wouldn't mind if only the occasional software needs to use Windows as thats what boot camp is for. Also KKOB do you know how good the 13" Macbook Pros are with games like Sims 3 or WoW? I know both aren't that demanding. To answer questions on discounts, I am in uni on Friday so I will log onto a computer and check
-
I must say KKOB and Ten10 are starting to sound like my conscience haha theres that one side telling me to leap over and reap in the rewards where as the other says stick with the same old and (fingers crossed) it eventually improves. So far I know I want a small laptop, preferably 13" so it is ideal to carry about to uni etc. I am also wanting the laptop to last me a good few years until I qualify so would be good to have an extended warranty just incase. Ten10, know of any top notch 13" laptops? On a side note my iPod nano is starting to play up and I have really liked the current ones...heres hoping for another new one to be announced and I can steal a 16gb current gen nano for under £100
-
yeh money is a bit tight so forking out to get a mac would take something...and so far I am leaning towards a windows laptop as I don't think the risk is worth it in case all the software I require is not available for mac. Platty, how you finding Windows 7? Better than Vista? Better than XP? Thanks Ten10 for the articles, AutoCad is one of my main programs so it does put a negative on the Buy a Mac column.
-
your correct need to pop into uni and hop onto one of there computers on campus to see how big a discount I can get. That is one of the main reasons I am considering it now before I finish uni and possibly miss out.
-
KKOB, by any chance do you work for apple as you have done a fine job of selling a Mac to me It is a MacBook I am interested in but which one would you recommend the most? I would say due to the price I am wanting it to last a good number of years. Was watching the videos you posted and I do admit it does seem daunting but thats mainly due to me being a Windows user for life, only used Mac the odd time at school. btw what is iLife 09? is it the equivalent to Office? Ten10, you have a valid point and due to the software restrictions it does make me lean towards sticking with PC...do you think one day we will have all software compatible with both OS?
-
Thanks for the comments. I am currently at uni studying Technological Teaching so require quite a few programs to do work on like Adobe Photoshop, Autodesk Inventor and Autocad, to name a few. Due to my field becoming a lot more computer orientated, should that hinder my decision to migrate to Mac? What would any of you say is the main benefits of OSX over Windows? I am also not a heavy PC gamer just the odd game from time to time but do enjoy the occasional blast at WoW or Sims...are these compatible? I know the Sims says it is on the box but can't find out if WoW is.

I recently decided to get a new set for my room as my old Samsung 26" was just too big for my room and things looked grainy. I went for the LG 22LH2000 for £220. Have same interests as you where I want my Wii to look as good as possible and also give a cracking movie picture. Had the tv a few weeks now and I am extremely happy with my choice. The colours from the tv are exceptional and it is relatively easy to set up to your personal preference. I would recommend 110%. http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-22LH2000-22-inch-Widescreen-Freeview/dp/B001UHMT2Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1252360185&sr=8-1

I have always wanted to treat myself to a Macbook Pro but have always held off due to price and compatibility problems. I was wondering how any former PC users got on with a Mac. Was the transition easy? Does most of your Windows software run on a Mac? Any impressions would be helpful.

I put a note inside mine asking them to contact me if they could not keep my data (precious Smash Bros save) and when I got it back it was all gone AND I even got my note back....Nintendo say that minor problems they normally can keep save data but major they can't. I thought for a big company it would be easy to transfer saves but no...

Well about a month back I bought Grand Slam Tennis and had a problem with the game freezing and after 4 exchanges Nintendo took my Wii in...cost £27 to get it fixed and when I got it back I had nothing...after getting that sorted everything was working fine until it started not reading discs and just freezing at black screen after changing channels. To cut this short Nintendo said they have to take it back in cause they boo boo'd so once again no Wii for the next week or so and I am losing all my Conduit data :(

Thanks Nintendohnut I thought I was right. I love the whole Dr Who and Torchwood universe and I really do hope for more Torchwood...s'pose we have to wait until Christmas then we have the special with Captain Jack.
