Shoe Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 Will there be any newer versions of the Wii later on? Someone just told me there will be a DVD version of the Wii coming out later on, but the original Wii has that anyways, right???? Please explain! Thank you!
conzer16 Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 Original Wii cannot play DVD's. Nintendo have announced that a DVD capable Wii will be released in Japan only (so far anyway) in 2nd half of 2007. http://wii.ign.com/articles/746/746637p1.html
Charlie Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 There is a version coming out with a DVD player next year, it wont be any different other than that (and a bigger price). The Wii can't play DVDs at the moment.
Nintendork Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 The ability to play DVDs on Wii is a software update, in theory it could be downloaded from the Wii shop. It has a North America (someone read the developper's small print) release and Japan release planned for late 2007, which is too late in most people's eyes. Because HD penetration will be so high. It may coincide with a price drop, it may merely be available in the new Wiis. Hard to say until there is a proper press release. I think it's likely they'll just issue a licensed software download with the ability to play DVDs.
gmanprime Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 Ohhh shiiiiiiiiit Calm down. Take a deep breath, and repeat in a level tone. I don't need another dvd player. It is about the games not the gimmicks. I don't need another dvd player. It is about the games not the gimmicks. I don't need another dvd player. It is about the games not the gimmicks. A Nintendo rep has stated that, whilst there is a software element required (i.e. the Sonic Solutions player), that is not all there is and a simple download is not possible to enable DVD playback.
blender Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 I bet the wii laser is tuned only to game discs for antipiracy.
Nintendork Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 Who sed that then? Was it that brunette who is good at getting things wrong? This early I think they are trying to die down the possibility of anyone wanting to wait for a DVD playing Wii. That's why nobody has spoken much of it.
Jasper Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 Why is there no-one actually being able to give us explaination. The thing about a different laser is impossible, because all those lasers are the same and if Nintendo had manufactured a different one, that would cause the same troubles like Sony had with it's blue diodes. And off course, it wouldn't be DVD. The problem with GameCube's Optical Disc was that it's reading direction was inverted (from center to outside, whilst DVD and CD go from outside to inside). So it's possible that Wii DVD's read the same way as GameCube's Optical Discs, and can therefore not read regular DVD's. So they need to bring a Wii with a both direction possibility to the market. But that's just my idea - but nobody really seems to know the answer..
blender Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 lasers arnt all the same. Why do you think so many mods for other consoles involve replacing the laser or people having to use particular brands of disc. Even cd vs dvd require different lasers wavelenghts approx 650 nm wavelength for DVD and 780 nm for CD. I have no idea what nintendo have done. I'm pretty sure its a myth regarding "backward-spinning". Remember that people were able to mod their gamecubes to play normal dvd.
Sparko Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 I've never really been bothered that the Wii doesn't play DVDs, I've got about 4 other DVD players in my house already. Sure it would have been nice for the extra functionality, but in the end it doesn't make that much of a difference, to me anyway.
