Tom Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 With the launch being close I need to start deciding how is best to connect the Wii to the net. Living in a flat I would rather not use my wireless router, as I'm sure someone will try and steal my precious bandwidth. I saw there is a lan adaptor accessory, but I would still need to use that via my router. If I remove the wireless aerial from the router will there still be a signal? What I was thinking of doing was getting one the the nintendo wireless adaptors that you can get for the DS. Would that be compatible with the Wii? I would assume so, but I don;t want to go making the necessary PC upgrades only it find it was all in vain.
Cube Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 There are security features on Wireless routers for a reason.
Tom Posted November 13, 2006 Author Posted November 13, 2006 which i wish I knew how to use! Sadly I have limited ability in setting up a network. I managed at my old house, but it wasn't secure, and I have no idea how to make one secure. unless its really easay, I'd rather just buy stuff to avoid the whole situation.
david.dakota Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 I'd certainly recommend getting those security settings sorted. It seems a waste to have a wireless router and not actually use it!
Tom Posted November 13, 2006 Author Posted November 13, 2006 it is this one: http://www.itreviews.co.uk/hardware/h639.htm at the moment its not being used, and I am using a wired connection to my moden. I should also add that I know it is compatible with my ISP, as its the same ISP u had when I used this at my old house.
Cube Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Open your browser and put "192.168.1.1" into your address bar (no http://www., http or ""s). Username: admin Password: password WEP information for this router can be found under the setup / wireless settings / security section. Just make a WEP Key, note down the number. Then simply enter the WEP Key when you setup the wireless on your Wii.
Patch Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 I use WEP encryption and MAC Address control on mine. WEP encrypts the data going in and out of the router and can only be decoded with an encryption key which each device must know about. You can also explicitly list the MAC Addresses of machines you want to allow use of the router. That about does it for me.
Cube Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 cheers! will that work with my ds too? Should do, yes. However you may need to update the firmware - See here, I had to with my Netgear. For more info see NintendoWiFi
Tom Posted November 13, 2006 Author Posted November 13, 2006 thanks very much for all your help! My only problem now is that some from my old house changed the password on the router, and it'll take alot of guessign to find it edit - Thanks very much! I have got it working now, with security. I wish I had realised how easy it was to set u.
Guest Stefkov Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 I remember seeing an option when watchign these Wii setup videos, in the Internet conection settings and option for the Nintendo Wifi adaptor. I wish i had a wireless router, but "its not secure" my parents were told a couple of years ago when they were seeing which to get, wired or wireless, so now we're wired. And ive had to spend £30 on the Dongle so i using it to its full potential.

Guest Stefkov Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 tut not secure.... get a router get a WAP key and your pretty secure.... I know that, but thats what my mum and dad were told at the time. I wish i was there to tell him about WPA and WEP. Just to put him out of a job or something . I have been moaning about it and at one point actually considered getting one out of my own money. Bu then that stupid. I woudlnt have money for the Wii.
