Cookyman Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Ok I thought I'd add this thread for people without a DS and have no idea about wirleess connections (namely me!) So heres a few questions to get us started. 1) I have cable broadband (telewest) now to get my Wii online I need a wireless router does it connect to the actual cable modem or the PC? (if its the cable modem I wont need to turn on my PC to go online on my wii right?) 2) I understand this is for the DS I won't need one for my Wii will I? 3) I'm sure theres loads of online DS users on here so imagine their router's will work with the wii - what would you recommend? which one gives best value for money (hey I'm on a budget here!) Hope this helps and if this has been covered in another thread I apologise in advance! : peace:
McMad Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Good thread, these answers will help me out a lot aswell.

Chuck Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Wii can commuinicate wirelessly(linky - look at network), yes you will need a wirelss router, but it should connect straight up, no extra bits and bobs. It also commuinicates wirelessly to the DS. Luckely I picked up a 802.11 wireless router for £35, but that was a promotion this is it
ZeldaFreak Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 You can connect the wii up with an ethernet cable connected from either the pc itself with ICS or through your modem the only other thing you will need though is an ethernet to usb adapter.

Gaijin von Snikbah Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Some routers are less trouble than others. We should list the ones who are easier to deal with.
Cube Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Will that work with Wii? (I don't have a wireless router or spare Ethernet ports)
Kazzahdrane Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Nintendo have said almost nothing useful about the Wii's online features hardware-wise. We don't know if the current WFC USB dongle will work for the Wii, we don't know if the DS can use the Wii as a Wireless Access Point. Why? Because Nintendo are probably still finalising that sort of stuff. Same reason why we won't see any titles with online play for months after console release. Nintendo need to get their act together and show they're really going to embrace online (and a weather and news channel don't count, neither does downloading of retro games).
McMad Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 I'm gonna wait till November though, before I go out and buy a Wireless router, just incase Nintendo reveal a cheap peripheral for the Wii that can connect it to the internet.

Thin I'll wait till after I get the Wii if no news is available.

There is no reason why it wont.
Cookyman Posted September 26, 2006 Author Posted September 26, 2006 2) I'm positve it will work with the Wii, but nothing has been confirmed yet. There is no reason why it wont. So how does this Nintendo DS Wi-Fi USB Connector work does it work like a wireless router?
Cube Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 So how does this Nintendo DS Wi-Fi USB Connector work does it work like a wireless router? 1) There is no "DS" in the name of the dongle. It's just "Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector". 2) Plug it in, install the software, then hit the button on the WFC part of the game to connect.

I'm assuming this is only good if your pc's in the same room then - I imagine it doesn't have much of a range? Think I'll go for a wirless router if thats the case.

I'm not sure on the range, it's well worth going for a wireless router in the long run.
McMad Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Can someone reccomend a good (cheap £20-£40) wireless router please?
Mercyful Fate Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 If the Wii gotta use the WiFi dongle I won't be playing online. The fact that my comp must be on and that I must use that shitty thing just make me sick. Nintendo - come up with a better solution with online gaming or fucking scrap the whole thing. Seriously, every online feature for the DS is more or less half-assed, don't deny it. If it's the same solution for the Wii it's gonna be crap too.
Cookyman Posted September 26, 2006 Author Posted September 26, 2006 Yeah, your PC will have to be in the same room as the Wii and will have to be on. I'm not sure on the range, it's well worth going for a wireless router in the long run. Cheers Moria thats all I needed to know - now if I can find a good priced one I'll get a wireless router!

Mercyful Fate Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Did you read any of what anyone said in this thread? Actually I have a bad habbit of posting without reading the whole thread. But even so. What's the option? Router or the dongle? Just as the DS.. no thx..
Cube Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 But even so. What's the option? Router or the dongle? Just as the DS.. no thx.. What do you expect? That the Wii magickally connets to the internet on its own accord? Anyway, I'll be getting a Wi-Fi Dongle if it works on Wii (I'm guessing it will)...Don't care if it means my laptop has to be one (mainly because I'll need it on to see the image)
