I think it's about a new feel in Rush, just like Sonic Adventure had a new feel. The hip hop music for Knuckles (despite me virtually hating hip hop otherwise) just made so much sense and was integrated with such charm.

 

Likewise, the overall feel in Rush is greatly coloured by its funky music, and thus it has a brand new atmosphere - as opposed to failing to capture that of the old games.

 

But then, loving the soundtrack for both JSRs I guess I've an easier time accepting it. Come back when it's flat out death metal and you won't hear me go on about atmosphere.

The original Sonic music (sonic 2 was best imo) was far better then the crap in sonic rush. Oh man i hated that music :hmm:.

Sonic Rush is the best 2D sonic game since the Mega Drive games. It's much better than all the GBA Sonic Advance titles. It's also the fastest 2D Sonic game ever.

 

Sonic Rush is easily my favourite DS game so far, although Mario Kart comes close.

I got put off 3D Sonic games since Sega did a crap job on the Sonic Adventure port on the GC. The Camera was the main problem and the controls were seriously cocked up. I just don't play 3D Sonic games anymore.

i thought sonic rush was far too fast though.the megadrive speed was enough

So those of you who wanted Crush 40 to make a version "His World" (including me), you've got your wish.

 

I've actually already 'obtained' the Zebrahead and Crush 40 versions of the song. Their great! Zebrahead's version is a lot faster and punkier sounding, the vocals are a lot better too. The Crush 40 version took a lot of getting used to, but I think it's better. It's a lot darker than the original, is slower paced and has different lyrics. The rapping sounds a lot better too.

Never Turn Back should've been there in place of All Hail Shadow and the soundtrack would've been perfect.

Whilst Never Turn Back is a better song, I really liked the cover of All Hail Shadow. Though if Crush 40 had decided to use Never Turn Back, they should have added more to it, just to make it slightly different.

 

I agree the OST is pretty damn good though. Although I would have definitely picked Crush 40's version of His World over the original.

I feel the same way right now. I mean I completed the game and everything, and didn't have nearly the same problems with the core bits (camera/controls) that everyone else seemed to have. Right now I'm trying to get S on everything and I'm up to Crisis City with Sonic, and I keep getting fucking cars chucked in my head to the point where my S becomes a B. Gets me every time and I turn off the 360 in pure, unadulterated rage.

 

It's the randomness of physics and sometimes the controls that cock things up. Add to that load times of fucking beardgrowage and it's just the type of game that doesn't seem to want you to play it. :(

1Up's How Sega Can Save Sonic the Hedgehog.

 

Remember the glory days of Sonic the Hedgehog? Once upon a time, he stood face to face with the likes of Bonk and Pac-Man and Mario himself, sneering sarcastically across the battle lines of the 16-bit console wars to remind Super NES owners that their system of choice might have a totally killer sound chip, but dang, was it slow. Mario jogged leisurely through the Mushroom Kingdom, collecting feathers and fruit and riding happy dinosaurs. Sonic, on the other hand, blasted through casinos and amazing 3D spaces, collecting golden rings and sneering at Dr. Robotnik's canniest inventions. He might have been short on depth and humility, but he was big on awesome.

 

Those halcyon times, alas, are long gone. Sonic is still a pretty big name, and his adventures make good money for developer Sonic Team and publisher Sega. But these days the little blue guy is way past his prime, as proven by his new outing on Xbox 360 and PS3. (Technically speaking, Sonic the Hedgehog is what is referred to as "a debacle.") Nowadays, Sonic is only for hardcore fans living in denial and casual gamers who haven't heard that his new games totally suck.

 

It's not too late for Sonic, though. We still want to love Sega's hyperactive hedgehog, and while our affection becomes more strained with each new, unplayable sequel, we're a forgiving bunch. We've come up with a simple four-step plan to help Sonic speed his way back into our hearts. Please, Sega, before it's too late.

 

1. Ditch the tagalongs

Sonic is a loner, Dottie. A rebel. Having all those companions and pals and buddies nipping at his heels just crimps his style. Especially newer characters like Silver the Hedgehog who, somehow, are even lamer than your average Sonic fanfic/fanart creation. And keep in mind that Sonic fans are so lame they like to draw pictures of Tails having sex. That's super lame. No one outside of Sonic Team's payroll likes Sonic characters who aren't Sonic, so why are we saddled with them? All we want to do is play as the man (er, hedgehog) himself.

 

So get rid of them. Or let them be background characters. Let Sonic rescue them at the end of a level, never to be seen again outside of cut-scenes. Whatever. Just let us play as Sonic, and Sonic alone.

 

 

 

2. That goes double for Shadow the Hedgehog.

Sigh. Don't even get us started.

 

 

 

3. Faster, Sonic, kill! Kill!

Remember Blast Processing? It was a sham, sure, but the idea behind it was a perfect summation of what Sonic was about: A game so fast that the Genesis had to be specially programmed to keep up with it. Slowing down to drink in the ambiance or whatever is pretty much the exact opposite of Blast Processing. Being forced to, say, go fishing in a Sonic game is like buying a Ferrari so you can take naps in the backseat.

 

Sonic games are best when they're about speed. And not in the Sonic Riders sense, where you can basically win by not pressing a single button. You should need a combination of speed and reflexes -- balls-out action, in other words. Take a cue from Sonic Rush, which was classic, dumb fun. There's a reason Sonic had an impatient, foot-tapping idle animation in the old games -- if you weren't running, you were missing the point.

 

 

 

4. Conversely, slow down

Sega, here's a secret you can take from your friends at Nintendo: Moderation makes for happy gamers. Zelda games arrive only once every two or three years. True Mario sequels are seen even less frequently. Spin offs are all well and good, but real follow-ups to a flagship series become far more significant if they're doled out in moderation.

 

It's basic economics: Scarcity makes any resource precious. But more importantly, there's no sense in cheapening a great idea with lots of halfhearted rehashes. Which sounds more exciting, a new Mario game or a new Mega Man game? Even the best hero can wear out his welcome, and our welcome mat is getting threadbare thanks to Sonic's big red sneakers.

 

 

 

5. Here's where the story ends

There are games that deftly interweave narrative and gameplay, adventures whose storytelling is nothing less than magnificent, whose characters are engagingly developed, whose plotlines create a sense of meaning and urgency for the action. And then...there's Sonic.

 

Let's face the facts: Sonic the Hedgehog is a game about a lumpy blue rodent who runs really fast and saves woodland critters from being turned into robots. That's fine -- we don't need an epic laden with Sturm und Drang (et gravitas) to make Sonic fun. We just need a flimsy excuse to jump through hoops, run through loops, and snag tons of rings. So let's stop with this weird mashup of bobbleheaded hedgehogs fighting realistic humans with accurately modeled handguns. Let's skip the tiresome cinematics. Let's avoid stirring speeches and grim proclamations. And please, for the love of God, don't ever make us see cute human girls making out with Sonic. Ever again.

I just posted this response to that article on another forum....

 

An epic plot is good, but not right in a Sonic game. Okay, so Sonic 2006's story was good, but it was hard to take seriously when there's a load of fluffy animals running around. Setting the Sonic universe in the real world and trying to make it realistic is a step in the wrong direction too. Since when was the idea of a load of giant talking animals realistic? XD It's not tragic by all means, but it's just odd for a Sonic game. Maybe even cell shading (don't hurt me!!) and making the cast and environments look more like the SA1/2 artwork could work. It would give a unique, fresh and stylized look to the series.

 

I think the real main reason Sonic is failing is the glitches and gameplay issues. Sega should deffo make a few small spin-offs to keep us going, whilst releasing a main Sonic game every 3 or so years. That way, it can be finely crafted to perfection and not rushed.

 

Though only Sonic playable!? Too many people like the other characters. Sure, Sonic should be the main focus (like 50-60% of the game dedicated to him) but the others should get a chance to shine. Characters like Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Silver, Amy and Blaze could work. With the main villain being Robotnik and Metal Sonic as his henchman.

 

All Sega need to do is to get the balance right, and it'd be perfect. Even if the rest of the cast only got a few levels each and/or unlockable mini episodes, I'm sure people would be happy. After all, they'd still be part of the story. Multiplayer races/challenges with this cast would be great.

WTF - Sonic The Hedgehog Very Hard Mode now available in the US, UK Marketplaces

In the first of three downloads, SEGA has released Very Hard Mode on to the Xbox Live Marketplace for 200 points ($4) for each character. For 200 points, you can purchase Sonic's, Shadow's, or Silver's Very Hard Mode.

 

You may be wondering if it's worth it, though? Though their are lots of changes in enemy numbers and item locations, here's the biggest differences in Very Hard Mode to the original-

 

* You now play Wave Ocean in reverse and must jump to the platforms on your own during the whale chase scene.

 

* Sonic now plays Dusty Desert on his own (without Elise).

 

* Silver's Crisis City is now way longer with no Blaze section.

 

* Sonic's Flame Core is reversed.

 

* Shadow plays through Sonic's Match Speed areas on foot or on Motorcycle.

 

* Shadow's Wave Ocean only goes through the hang glider section and a new section that is Sonic's Match Speed section on Motorcycle.

 

* In Sonic's Aquatic base, you need to destroy lots of enemies to make the Goal Ring appear.

 

* Sonic goes through the ruin area of Tropical Jungle.

 

* Shadow's Crisis City got a change in that there's now an Omega segment and the original hang gliding segment has been replaced with a small platforming segment with Rouge.

 

* Various enemy, item, and springs have been placed to new locations that make it a bit harder.

 

* Your usually forced to take the harder path of a level instead of having a choice.

Laughable. They release a game that isn't finished properly and then make people pay to play a bit more of it. I really hope none of you pay for that.

Actually...

 

...

 

I'm sort of playing this again. When I first had it I finished up all the story things and got the proper ending and all that (curse you emerald hunt at the end, blasted infernal gameplay from hell!) but I never got the S ranks and stuff. Later on I returned to it with the intention of gettin those, but all that gave me was a massive headache (look a few posts up, I'm sure I said so).

 

Now however, with the downloadable content being difficulty levels I reckoned that maybe the "hard" mode wasn't just harder, but different aswell. That's when I noticed you get the "X Episode Completed" achievement for just finishing the hard mode, and I began playing that without aiming for S.

 

What a difference that makes, when dying doesn't automatically ruin everything for you! Also, enemy numbers increase = way more combat = best part about the game in the first place.

 

I still shiver when I think of the day I'll set out to actually grab those S-ranks, but in the meantime I'm actually having fun with this again. Also - I can pretend the city bits/missions never existed! It's a total win.

 

As for the DLC, I'll decide on that when I'm done with the hard mode. Playing Dusty Desert without elise just might be worth it.

remember playing my friends copy the day it came out! rubbish game and he was gutted as he got it from Game so couldnt get all his money back.

 

honestly since Sonic Adventure 2 in the DC, the 3-D sonic games are no better!!
