Eenuh Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Hey guys, technical woes for me so hope you can help me. Firefox updated itself today, apparently to version 3.6.4. Since it did that, it has been acting up quite a bit. Basically more than half of the time, it takes ages to load a page (few minutes), and at the bottom of the window it says "stopped" instead of loading or whatever it should say. I have absolutely no clue how to fix this, but it's really really annoying. Anyone know what could cause it to act up like this? Any way to fix it? I tried re-installing it or restarting my laptop but obviously no result from that. Oh and I'm on a MacBook with OS X version 10.4.11.
Wesley Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 I don't really have much knowledge what can cause these sort of browser problems or how to fix them. I'd just try uninstalling Firefox and downloading the client for a fresh install. Firefox (if I remember correctly) updates through it's own program and maybe a fresh install might work better. Or simply install and older version (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html) and resist updating until it passes 3.6.4. Make sure to backup your bookmarks and whatever before you do this though! (Or just install Chrome... )
Eenuh Posted June 25, 2010 Author Posted June 25, 2010 I don't even think I know how to properly un-install something from my macbook... Cause I thought I did get rid of Firefox and then re-installed it, but now I'm not sure... Also tried installing Chrome just now but it doesn't seem to work with my version of Mac OS X. I also have Opera and Safari. Safari only seems to work in school and never at home. Opera for some reason takes about ten minutes to load the first page, and lots of stopping and refreshing etc. =( Firefox was the only browser properly working, arghhhh.
Nolan Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 From your description of what Opera was doing it sounds like a Internet Connection problem rather than a browser issue.
Eenuh Posted June 25, 2010 Author Posted June 25, 2010 No my internet connection is fine really. I didn't explain the Opera thing right, but when I open it, I have to open a new tab, close the first tab it was already loading, and then try to open a site, stop it, refresh it, stop it, refresh it etc. Until it actually loads. Otherwise it will just sit there for ages not loading anything. =/ *doesn't like Opera* Firefox worked fine before this update and now I want it back. =(
Wesley Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Unless Firefox has an uninstaller for Mac you simply delete it from your Apps folder, no? Drag the Firefox application to the Trash.Firefox also has a .plist file at ~/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist you may wish to remove. Eenuh Posted June 25, 2010 Author Posted June 25, 2010 Yeah I did try uninstalling and re-installing the new one, three times. Always the same result. So now I've gone back to the old version of Firefox you linked to and that seems to work fine. Hope I can keep using this for a while! Thanks for the help guys. ^____^
RoadKill Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 You're running a really old version of OS X In my experience, OS X drops out of support quite quickly compared to Windows. You'll probably want to upgrade to Snow Leopard whenever you can. It's pretty cheap. If you can't, and have a PowerPC based machine, then I guess get Leopard, since that's still a big upgrade over Tiger

I have no idea what PowerPC means and if I have it or not. To be honest I know nothing about Macs etc. Only reason I got it is because I had to for school. =P But yeah I don't really want to install a new operating system on here unless it's really needed... I mean this laptop is 4 years old now so I feel I should probably just save up for a new one or an iMac heh. You really think this problem is because of my operating system?
