S.C.G Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Capcom nearly lost the source code for Okami and that wasn't even a long time ago. Happens often than you'd think, sadly. Really? that's truely sad... you would think that games companies would take better care of their game data.
jammy2211 Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Are Sega terminally stupid? the answer to what they should be doing is staring them in the face, take Sonic back to two dimensional roots with 3D rendering over the top, simple! Sod their apparent 'new core audience' of 12 year olds, they will learn in time to like Sonic in 2D, if Sega really are planning on ignoring their true fans who grew up with the series then they are more stupid than I thought. Making Sonic into a Werehog for part of Sonic Unleashed was a rubbish idea yet they nailed the Sonic levels almost perfectly, I really don't give a toss if the youth of today thought that Were-Sonic was 'cool' and 'awesome' because in truth it wasn't and it was those parts of the games that were both broken and frustrating and I bet many a 12 year old resorted to smashing their game pads in frustration over it at some point, hardly progress is it? Besides, kids of today are easily pleased with stuff like that, they aren't as discerning or demanding as the true fans of the series are, and on that front I don't blame Sega for wanting to make a quick buck from that oh-so easy to please section of the market but that doesn't make it right damnit! 2D games sell less then 3D games, that's why Sonic keep the 2d stuff to the handhelds where 3D isn't really the standard as such. Still, if Sonic can play Tennis, race go-karts, host parties and rip off all the other Mario Spin offs, I see no harm in making some kick-arse 2d Sonic game on top. I don't know if I'd like them to go down the Mega Man 9 route or give us some sort of awesome art-styled 2d game. Bah it won't happen, and even if it does, it's nothing worth shouting about if Sonic Team make it.

The point is i do think effort is made with the sonic games..but theyre always doing it wrong.. Sonic CAN work in 3d... sonic adventure was a good game let down by any gameplay that wasnt sonic running.. every game after this just made it worse. but i'll say this again and again.. sonic is always aimed at a kid american audience because he just isnt very popular in japan and never really was... mario is aimed at a japanese kid audience and No i dont believe this "its aimed at everyone crap" sonic unleashed was going in the right direction as far as i saw but they keep trying to find ways to break up the gameplay and these ways never work... This also happens in starfox, all everyone really wants to do is arwing but they find other things to break it up when all everyone wants is another lylat wars. I don't know if I'd like them to go down the Mega Man 9 route or give us some sort of awesome art-styled 2d game. Emasher Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 In terms of sonic, I agree with the Gameoverthinker. Sonic was designed to be cool back in the 90s. Cool things are never cool for very long because what is cool changes over time. Blue Hedgehogs who run really fast are no longer cool, Bald Space Marines are. Mario However, was designed to be a fun platformer, he was never designed to be cool really, and as a result, he's pretty much timeless.
pedrocasilva Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Mario However, was designed to be a fun platformer, he was never designed to be cool really, and as a result, he's pretty much timeless. Are you sure? Yokota: When the track was rejected, the words that Kondo-san had said really stuck with me: "Yokota-san, if somewhere in your mind you have an image that Mario is cute, please get rid of it." When I heard that, I realized that I had always had this image that Mario was a character for kids, and without realizing it, I had been composing music that I thought would appeal to children. I asked Kondo-san at the time, "Then what kind of music would work with Mario?" He replied that "Mario is cool". Source: http://us.wii.com/iwata_asks_vol3_page2.jsp Sure it started as loose popeye representation with no clear intent, but from the moment they made Super Mario Bros I think they started gearing him up for being "cool". He's a mascot after all. I'm sure people working on it are aiming for it to look as cool as possible
LostOverThere Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Still crying out for a Sonic game, in the form of the originals to make it's way on WiiWare/XBLA/PSN.

Well granted... but if Sega cared about quality then they would do what's best for the gameplay and not piss about with it too much. well you see.. i dunno I really think sega make an effort with the sonic franchise.. the music is top notch( if you like that sort of thing) and the graphics are usualy pretty nice and every sonic game tries something new.. Yes, the music in Sonic games is mostly excellent as are the graphics usually, it's the gameplay that they keep falling flat on their face on, it's frustrating because last time they got it half right but fucked it up royally by introducing the Were-Hog sections. Sonic Team can make good Sonic games because they started out making most of them which were fantastic, they've just lost sight of how to do this and it's truly sad; having said that though, at least they did right by hiring Dimps for the Sonic Advance / Rush games, now those were absolutely brilliant which should be telling Sega something... they need to collaborate more.

So yes I DO blame sonic team for the bad sonic games... Imagine if amusement vision was to make a sonic game or something... In terms of sonic, I agree with the Gameoverthinker. Sonic was designed to be cool back in the 90s. Cool things are never cool for very long because what is cool changes over time. Nintendo seems to know better than anyone that the best way to keep a character appealing to everyone is to make them shut the fuck up... mario characters, samus and link, kirby etc etc barely say anything.. and we're all better off this way..but everyone hates tails because he talks like a whiny child. ok I could go on a long rant about sonic I really could.. the ansswers to their problems are always staring them right in the face..
Josh64 Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Shenmue 1+2Skies of Arcadia 2 Jet Set Radio Wii House of the Dead Overkill 2 with House of the Dead 1 as bonus Nights remake and I am set! a NiGHTS remake would be a dream come true
Emasher Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I honestly don't care enough about sonic to argue about the IP, so I'm not going to bother continuing the discussion.
lostmario Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 a NiGHTS remake would be a dream come true Doubtful, with Nights: Journey of Dreams bombing saleswise.
