flameboy Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 http://www.ipodhacks.com/article.php?sid=1000 Seen this does it really work? I am planning on getting an acer aspire one with linux but concerned about the lack of itunes...I know there are other programs but I none of seem to have access to the itunes store for obvious reasons.... so need to get itunes running if its possible. thirtynine. Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Why use Linux if you want itunes. Its like reverse logic. Use this: http://amarok.kde.org/ Or if you actually like your CPU getting raped http://www.getsongbird.com/ which is sexy but a bit resource heavy
DCK Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Well, honestly it's a bad move to buy all your stuff from the iTunes store But yeah, I can't say. Regular iPods (not Touch and iPhone) are well supported for normal music, but DRM and Linux just don't mix. You could use a Live CD, virtual machine or Ubuntu Wubi (install in Windows) to test it. You have to pay for CrossOver Office though, unless you find it somewhere out on the street. Apparently they have music that downloads to an iPod out on the street as well EDIT: It seems to have some reasonable success stories using Wine, which is freely available. iTunes Store is reported to work, but iPod sync not so much. You have to fiddle around quite a bit it seems though.

Also found this one; http://www.wine-reviews.net/applications/itunes-73-on-linux-with-wine.html I was looking at getting the aspire for a second laptop, but the whole linux thing put me off. So I got a Sumsung NC10 with XP, fantastic little Netbook with a huge Hard Drive to store all my music and movies. It is about £100 dearer than the Aspire, but it is so worth it, just for XP. Actually, I now use my Netbook as my main computer. They are fantastic, just mini laptops without the CD/DVD ROM drive.
McPhee Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Here's a simple solution; upgrade all of your iTunes tracks to iTunes Plus. You then shouldn't have any bother using an iTunes alternative. For future purchases use Amazon MP3 instead of the iTunes store, it's cheaper, DRM free and Linux compatable

McPhee Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Hmm, yeah i hadn't realised. I'd forgotten how much of a pain in the arse it was back when i had a Touch. It's supposed to be possible through SSH (i don't have a Jailbroken Touch lying around to test it though).
