tapedeck Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 If a game looks ****, then it's pretty much a testament to how the whole game is going to pan out. Games can look amazing but be pretty crap, I can't think of an example the other way round. Generally your right but there are exceptions... Boom Blox, Kororinpa, Tetris, (insert other puzzle games_____) (Celda to a million blind fanboys), ISS Deluxe on the PS1, The PES series (after 3), NBA Jam, Aladdin on the SNES (compared to the MD version), (A ton of arty game styles like Parappa, Rez, Vib Ribbon...) Glover, Megaman 64, Turok64, Pokemon DS. My favourite: BODY HARVEST. Ok, ok so some of those are at a stretch I admit. But there ARE examples. Is it not just specific genres we EXPECT good graphics from? Like racers. (people always complain about Mario Kart's looks). Like shooters - They MUST look amazing. We almost set ourself subconscious benchmarks for specific genres. Racers are right up there I'm sure.
Ganepark32 Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 Exactly. It looked great because it was different from the usual 'photo-realism' which is what I was getting at when I said I had sort of shot myself in the foot. But if you think about it, from a technical stand point it didn't look great in comparison with what can be achieved on the consoles, which is what I was trying to get at. Poorly. ^ interesting you should mention the SNES version of Aladdin in comparison to the megadrive version. But the megadrive one was the far superior in all aspects and the SNES game was pretty awful gameplay wise. But this is a digression.

The 'animotion' from Dave Perry et al was amazing on the MD version.Still looks great today. I did feel that the POP 'lite' SNES version was very enjoyable in parts though. I digress...
ThePigMarcher Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 It's not so much the lack of effort in the visuals that bother me , although they are pretty shocking , but the apparent omission of any online mode on the Wii (unless something has changed). The majority of long-term appeal in this franchise has always been the online , especially with the older versions , not so much now that Capcom pretty much screwed up the online on the 360 (and I assume the PS3) this year , with customisation pretty much eliminated and frequent system crashes , but as least the option to race online was/is there. From what I understand , they decided to focus on the controls and that's the reason for the exclusion of online on the Wii , fair play , IF they have actually nailed the controls , but they would need to be pretty special to offset the lack of graphical flair and missing features.

Shooters, racers, if they look bad, then that's pretty much a sign how far the rest is going. Most of the games you listed looked great at the time, I really don't get where you pulled some of them from either 0_o. Body Harvest was a great looking N64 game, especially when you consider the fact it was this huge open world with vehicles and everything, stuff that does restrict graphics potential. Boom Blox I think looked alright too, nice style, couldn't ask for much more. Obviously it varies from genre to genre (And generation to generation).

Developers that produce a good game will back it up with good presentation to draw in some attention and to entice the potential buyers sitting on the fence. Really, how hard can it be to make one track and 20 or so vehicles look good? Christ.

Racers are right up there I'm sure. yes but all of the games you mentioned are artisically amazing. parappa looks fantastic as does vib ribbon.. and tetris always does the job.. there is a difference between simple graphics and terrible.. wario shake for wii is simple yet it looks amazing.. this and crusin is terrible.. If a racing game looks terrible it generall is terrible and there are very very few exceptions. I never hear anyone complaining about mario kart's graphics.. they are quite excellent on wii(bar 4 player split screen.. looks a bit blurry) unless you are talking about the cartoonyness of it. I woulnt say shooters MUST looks excellent . cel shaded games like XIII look fantastic too.. I will say that timesplitters isnt graphically amazing but gets the job done
dazzybee Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 I remember saying the game thing about Shaun White wii and look at how that turned out. People were doing the same thing, posting images of 1080 64 and saying how it looked better blah blah blah. WHy do people shoot their loads so quickly? Yeah it look shit, but they could have been concentrating on the GAMEPLAY, with the last few months cleaning up the graphics!! PS Aladdin SNES is waaaaaay better than the megadrive version PPS As another random note (linked because I got them both for xmas one year), did anyone player Lawnmower man on the SNES? Thought it was vastly under rated!
Ganepark32 Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 ^ lol. Oh Dazzybee, how wrong you are on Aladdin. But each to their own.
mcj metroid Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 PS Aladdin SNES is waaaaaay better than the megadrive version P! good god no!aladdin on the snes was just god awful.. don't get me wrong i love the snes and megadrive equally but... just no the snes was better for some things but I find that the megadrive was better for most(excluding sound) cmon compare here.. everything is better..its faster and more challenging.. I think the music is better .. but no doubt the snes version looks a bit nicer.. they are 2 completely different games though. seriously though the megadrive version looks way more fun as you can see in this vid the mortal kombat series for example. but anyway completely off topic
