nekunando
I have been having problems with my computer for a good few months now.. different problems each time.. but with University starting again on monday, I really could do without the problems! In the last couple of months, I have regularly been getting a blue screen at random times during my time at the computer which says that it has encountered an error and must be shut down. I turn it off and upon restarting I am greeted with a screen to say that it is checking C: for consistency the continues on as normal. On many occasions, FAT32 appeared to be a reason for the problem and so I checked the properties of the HDD (C:) to find that of the 14.6GB of space, only something like 4% was free (nowhere near enough for my liking ) I am going into final year of a Computing Course at University.. but there is no way I am an expert when it comes to computers.. on things like this I just do not have a clue! I am looking to free up some space and stop the problem of all the errors that occur, but I need help! How would I free space? I don't see much that I can remove and the disk defragmenter requires 15% space to run.. what can I do? Next question.. would converting the file system from FAT32 to NTFS help? Would there be any problems in attempting this as I know that it is very difficult to reverse! Finally, I have never purchased any internal hardware for my PC before and don't really know what to look for.. one of the reasons I do not play any games on my PC is due to not really being familiar with specifications.. and now, clearly, the lack of space! Is there anything I can buy which will increase the capacity from 14.6GB to something much larger? If anyone can help, thank you!
Mr_Odwin
If you have little of worth on the computer (and you probably don't given that your hard drive is so small) then back-up everything important to cd/dvd and then do a fresh install of whatever operating system you are using. If you want to continue the way you are, then you could try CCleaner -that can often free up a fair bit of space. Internal hard drives are cheap and easyish to fit - just open the case, screw it in and plug in all the right cables. Your probably need an IDE drive, not sata. External hard drives are more expensive but it's generally just a case of plugging it into a usb socket. Your computer sounds old: Crazy, out there option - you could try installing a lightweight Linux distro like Xubuntu, to see how it gets a new lease of life. nekunando
http://www.ccleaner.com/ Is that what you mean? I may give it a go but I am scared of erasing something that I need and making the problem even worse.. I can't install the operating system as all I have is a 'Master DVD' that was created when the computer was cleared a few months ago..
Mr_Odwin
That's CCleaner. If you use the analyse button it'll tell you exactly what it would delete without actually deleting it.
nekunando
I used it earlier before you got back to me.. basically straight after I posted ..cleared a few MB, but nothing much! After that I decided to convert the file system from FAT32 to NTFS.. I'm only just back home there but so far so good.. we'll see if it lasts! Konfucius
My dad had a similar problem. A year after it showed the first problems, it broke down completely. I recommend replacing the existing harddrive with a new one. They have a lot more space now and are pretty cheap.
