Happenstance Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Right ive just got a new broadband connection and we got a free wireless router with it. I have set up the router next to our office pc as it doesnt have a wireless card so its now connected by network cable. Ive managed to get the internet working through it but when I search with my laptop for the router it cant find it. Anyone know how to sort this out, or even if it can work as both a wired and wireless router?
Shorty Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 It can definitely work as both. Have you used your laptop to find a wireless network before? If not consider: Is your laptop's wireless device enabled? Some laptops have a wireless switch which could be a dedicated button or a function key (eg fn+f2)
Happenstance Posted September 4, 2008 Author Posted September 4, 2008 Yeah ive used it once before and ive made sure that wireless is turned on. The manual for the router gave two set ups for wired and wireless. One had you plugging in the router with the pc off and network cable in for wired install and one had no network cable, pc off for wireless. Would I maybe have to do the wireless install first then wired or should it be sending out the wireless signal regardless?
Mr_Odwin Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Try logging in to the admin panel of your router and playing around. You may have wireless turned off in there.
Happenstance Posted September 4, 2008 Author Posted September 4, 2008 There are no programs for the router, it came with no cd or anything. Anyway ive now managed to connect to the router but its having problems connecting to the internet now and getting an IP address
Mr_Odwin Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Router's have admin panels at stuff like 192.168.2.1 - you just go there with your browser. The login/pass is often admin/admin. Look up your router's defaults on google.
Shino Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Depending on the brand it can also be 192.168.1.1 just type it in the browser, see around if there's something strange, maybe its not broadcasting.
Shorty Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 it can be lots of things, mine ends in 1.254. Check the manual
Happenstance Posted September 4, 2008 Author Posted September 4, 2008 Havent been able to find it on the net and there doesnt seem to be much that came with the router document wise
RoadKill Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 start>run>cmd ipconfig The default gateway is your router's IP address, connect to it in your browser
Happenstance Posted September 4, 2008 Author Posted September 4, 2008 Its not giving one, it just comes up with 0.0.0.0 for the IP and Subnet and the Default Gateway is blank
Shino Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 You're not trying it with the laptop are you?
Happenstance Posted September 4, 2008 Author Posted September 4, 2008 It did just occur to me that yeah. I tried it with the pc and got through to the username/password but nothings working there. Scratch that, I got in with Admin and Password. Any tips now on what may need changing?
Colin Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 http://www.portforward.com/default.htm Click on Routers, then click on some random program in the list. Then it should tell you the ip address to log onto your router.
Happenstance Posted September 4, 2008 Author Posted September 4, 2008 I seem to have sorted out the problem now (eventually, after finding it working then realising it was using the office pc for internet connection sharing). Thanks a lot everyone.
