dwarf Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 I'm a new owner of the PS3 and I wandered what kind of cool tricks you can do with it, mostly concerning the menu screen. If you know of other stuff you can do on all games or modes that would be great too. Is there a way of getting your own wallpaper, which is the best way to upload a photo of yourself onto a character in a game ala Tiger Woods? Which menu options do you think work well? Also I created an account for my Dad and a sub-account for me but I can't get the sub-account to work online - parental controls restrict it even though i turn them all off in the security settings. Cheers for help and advice.

Cheers for help and advice. Things I've learned (as I'm a relatively new PS3 owner) is that there is a lot of depth... For starters, here are 'pointless' tricks: On the menu screen the square buton organises folders and the right analogue changes the visualisation for music (on the 'swirly' effect only.) You can put in a generic USB memory stick and by pressing triangle can explore the USB item and can copy music/photos/movies via triangle then "copy". Other things are streaming from a computer by ticking a few boxes in mediaplayer library settings (which is detailed in the PS3 thread by Daft.) When you've done that you can stream DIVX/AVI's/MPEG4 movies to the PS3 or (again) copy them to the HDD with a press of triangle and "copy". You can also insert music CD's and copy entire albums to the HDD. Do some Googling for a nice little sixaxis.zip file for your PC and you can then use the PS3 controller as a PC USB controller. Neat. Last but not least, if you go to http://www.freeps3themes.com via the PS3 browser, you can download loads of free themes. Which are all then placed via the settings menu. Can't help you out on the other problems though.. And that's all I can think of atm. Have fun
dwarf Posted June 25, 2008 Author Posted June 25, 2008 OK I still can't get my Sub-Account to work online, it always says that parental controls stop me from doing so, even though I turn everything off on parental controls. If someone has a workable sub-account please can they tell me their settings? Cheers.
flameboy Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 I'll have a look at my japanese account I set up because that works online fine.
tapedeck Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Something I found out today: Cleaning out the dust inside your 40gb PS3. (Only works on 40gb models - apparently.) Steps: 1. turn off PS3 2. turn off switch situated on the back of the system. 3. HOLD the EJECT button 4. turn on switch at the back of the system (NOT THE POWER BUTTON on the front) whilst still holding the EJECT BUTTON 5. Hold until dust has been cleared. This is a general fan test but also acts as a dust blower. And...Washed out colour fix: There was some major internet ranting about the 360 having better/deeper colours previously...the answer? Go to your system settings, then display then RGB settings and change "Limited" to "Full", then flip the "super-white" setting to "On". Voila, colours that appear less "washed out". Everyone probably knows these tricks but if not: You're welcome
LegoMan1031 Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Well i never new them tapedeck! I have learned something new today, yay!
Adrian DX Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Anyone know if there's a way to copy "protected" save games onto a SD card (or any of the likes). I'm borrowing a PS3 from a friend of mine and I want to copy some of my save game from from the HD to an SD card, but it says it "cannot copy data". This message does not appear on any of the other save games I try to copy (Could it be that it can't copy it because its Japanese?)
flameboy Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Adrian DX, I believe it varys from game to game, Sony unlike Microsoft do not currently impose copy protection on safe files, but having been said some games do have it locked.

The only thing it will do is tear the bearings in your fan, it's a test for Sony to do if you send your console in for repair not to clean out dust.

Choze Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 And...Washed out colour fix: There was some major internet ranting about the 360 having better/deeper colours previously...the answer? Go to your system settings, then display then RGB settings and change "Limited" to "Full", then flip the "super-white" setting to "On". Voila, colours that appear less "washed out". Everyone probably knows these tricks but if not: You're welcome The picture quality advice is for newer more advanced HDTV. To begin with they need to be HDMI 1.3, support super white and feature hig bit colour systems, stuff 360 cant do. Only afew sets in the UK can take advantage of this or you'll end up with crushed blacks or odd colours. Most people are best off leaving limited on and Superwhite off. Also the 360 has never had better colours infact many games have dithering anyways for performance reasons. The 360 applies an artifical contrast and darker look(or incorrect output values, whatever you prefer to say) which is why game modes in tvs have added brightness. This was for the 360 specifically. Hence PS3 and Wii owners should never use game mode (marketing gimmick anyway).
