Dante Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Nintendo are suing Nyko due to alleged infringements on the wireless Kama Nunchuk. Nyko released their Kama Nunchuk earlier this year, a wireless solution for Wii owners who found that they would often whip themselves in the face with their Nunchuk cable during a heated game of Wii Boxing (just like Indiana Jones). Despite complaints of poor battery life, the Nunchuk was very well received in America (it's yet to see a European release). Nintendo clearly weren't impressed by this, however. The serial money-printers claim that the Kama Nunchuk infringes several patents and trademarks of their own Nunchuk, and that it "wholly appropriates the novel shape, design, overall appearance and even the color and materials used in the Nintendo Nunchuk controller". Nyko have also issued a response to the impending lawsuit: "We have not knowingly violated anyone's intellectual property and we're still examining this." bloomberg.com & N-E
Olympic Gamer Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 This is absolutely mind boggling. They did look alot like the first party nunchucks but without a wire, but Nintendo seem quick on this one, and it pisses me off. Did Nintendo get beaten to the mark and they arent happy? Bollocks to them. Nintendo shouldnt have the right to sue after being fined and constantly avoiding and appealing against price fixing in Europe.

Nintendo did have the nunchuck wire-less in the early plans of the design but thought it would better adding a wire to it to the wii-mote. Nintendo are suing them for fully coping the design of the nunchuck.
Tellyn Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 I'd like Nintendo to check out GAME's own wired Nunchuk. It's a carbon copy bar 10% of it being covered by a rubber grip. To top it off, Nintendo's Nunchuk costs £17.99 in GAME (approximately £3 above RRP) whilst GAME's Nunchuk costs £14.99, recommended retail price of the official Nunchuk. Something's a bit off there.
blender Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 they are protecting their controllers on this occasion as they need to protect their patents. If they do not challenge nyko, they risk loosing their patent protection.... This this would allow microsoft and SONY to develop their own nunchuks more easily. Out of all the controller perpherals, the nunchuck is the most patentable. Remove controls are not
pedrocasilva Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 WHY? Nintendo should really leave Niko off the hook on this one, these companies had all to have great relations. And it's not like, if Nintendo releases a wireless one it won't sell tenfold more anyway. If they're going after Wiimote clones... well, start going after Microsoft if rumors are true, and asus with their eee controller, and... and... etc... I'm against suing.

They put the price of official prephs up when the console was released because they knew stock was limited and they'd have more than any other shop. And its still in place either because they feel they can get away with it or because stock is still limited and whenever it becomes general (2011 maybe?) they'll drop the price.

That's still dodgy though. Even more so that they offer their own alternatives for less than or the same as the RRPs of the original products.
Olympic Gamer Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Price fixing by the sounds of it. Brilliant, I hope the european court looks into this, Nintendo still owe millions to them and keep appealing against it from the N64 days. Great company, great games, yet once again, europe gets the fucking elbow.

I 100% agree with this. Not much else I can say.
LegoMan1031 Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Nintendo have obviously had enough of companies trying to sue them so they thought they would give it a go. lol.
