Mokong Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 Smackdown Inferior No Mercy Superior. I doubt we'll ever see a game like No Mercy again, DoR was the closest, but it looks like we won't even see that again either. With all the praise for both these fanchises and critical recognition they are better than the Smackdown franchise, why in the hell have these fallen by the way side? You'd think it was a no brainer. I imagine the convo went something like this: THQ Programmer: "hey we made a really great game, lets use the gameplay mechanics from this in the others and improve on them" THQ Board of Directors: "no, a better idea would be to use the worse brand, so every year we can claim little improvements over the previous years, plus the Smackdown brand is more recognisable and therefore more potential profit, who cares how the game plays just make it look pretty.... you weren't even meant to make No Mercy into a good game in the first place, what went wrong" THQ Programmer: *look of contempt* "I hate you so much"
Mokong Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 *Big Bump* So am I like the only one on the forum with this game then? If not let me know what you think. I've not played last years game but from what i read this one is a massive improvement... still very arcadey though which is a shame, so as expected not near No Mercy and slightly below Day of Reckoning 2 also, story mode is pretty good though, even if it is limited to what 6 characters, but makes each storyline pretty good as it is focused on your character and the extra comentry in that mode really adds to it. Motion controls pretty ok too. If anyone does have it, i set up a thread in the Online board for friend code trading and match set-ups. Someone go there and play with me
dazzybee Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I used to love wrestling games. Does this have royal rumble in it? Bought Smackdown 07 on the 360, pretty good, but without friends it's pretty pointless and being older I just don't have friends who are up for it. Saying that, the Wii version does appeal to me. If it's got loads of characters, loads of modes and is fun and not broken then I could be tempted. I also didn't know it had online matches, thats pretty good! Hmmmm. Did I ask if you it had royal rumble? Used to be my favourite mode!! WHich game was it where randomly another character would come in and try and ruin it for someone?
Jimbob Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I bought this title on the 360 last week, and it is a great improvement over the 08 version by far. Most things that were bugged or broken inc and not limited to entrances, commentary and actual faces of wrestlers have been improved so now entrances inc individual DX entrances, joint Hardy entrance complete with proper theme/video and commentary which follows the action and not what they want. I'm quite liking this atm. RtW mode is good. Edit: Yes, this has Royal Rumble in it as well as new matches inc Inferno and Gauntlet
Mokong Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Edit: Yes, this has Royal Rumble in it as well as new matches inc Inferno and Gauntlet The Wii has Royal Rumble, but no inferno match shame. The Wii version does have an Elimination Chamber match which got me really excited.... until I played it and found it NERFFED. You do have 6 people in the match and it is done elimination style... but there's NO Chamber, WTF? How can they call it Elimination Chamber without the Chamber? Still it does have nearly every other match, Casket, and *cough* Bra & Panties for the Women are also missing though

Then I might actually think about whether I should buy this...

Ignore this part, I am an IDIOT, i'm playing now and looked again, the word "chamber" isn't actually there, it just say "elimination", I must have just imagined seeing the word Chamber in my excitement after reading the word "elimination" i jumped to conclusions... still a proper Elimination Chamber match would have been good.
dazzybee Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 So would you recomend it? How are the motions?
Guest Maase Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Is there any option to turn the motions off? (Also, i forgot i was the one who made this topic, hooray for me)
Mokong Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Motions work fine (and no you can't turn them off) Only thing about the motions I don't like is for grappling. You hold down A (soft grapple) or B (strong grapple), hold a direction on the anologue stick (or leave neatrul) for a different move and then swing the wiimote. It would have been much better if they just did it like before. IE: Tap A plus direction for soft grapple or Hold A plus direction for Strong Grapple. And leave out the swing, and just use motion for the "prompt points" during strong grapples. Leaving the B button free for something else.... like a "run" button... you can only run if you not near your opponent and swing wiimote (strike) which does a running strike (if near opponent it's normal strikes), which means you can't run away quickly if trying to avoid someone. Slightly annoying. Strong grapples then have prompts for different motions at different points to continue the move, same with finishers. I like this, cause you'll get a few different choices each one changing the throw to a different move. eg: Initiate a Choke Slam, you'll hold the opponent up, depending on the motion you use you'll get a one hand choke slam, a two handed choke slam or throw the guy across the ring
Mokong Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 *bump* My review is up on the N-E mainsite now http://www.n-europe.com/review.php?rid=427
darksnowman Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 Nice in depth review. I'm not desperate for a wrestling game at the minute (however, I'd snap it up if it sounded like a must-have) so I might just hold off and see what happens with next years. I get the vibe that while the game is solid enough, its not bettering what we've already seen before, so I'm not really missing out on anything. You'd agree, right? I need to ask you (or anyone) about the gripe you have in the review with TLC matches. Is it not just plain old ladder matches that have something to climb the ladder to get? I thought TLC was just to use tables, ladders and chairs to beat your opponent to a pulp then pin them? I could be wrong!

Yeah if you feel you don't really need a wrestling game yet possibly wait for next years. With the exception of online matches, motion controls and the interactive entrances/post match and the new Story Mode there's not a whole lot new in it. If you saw it at reduced price though or pre-owned it would be worth it. It is a solid but slightly flawed game. TLC's are as i described, a Ladder match with tables and chairs added for extra brutality there SHOULD be a belt or something hanging above the ring.
