Japan's Nintendo Co. Ltd. said its quarterly operating profit more than tripled, driven by stellar demand for its DS and Wii game gear, and it raised its annual outlook above market expectations

Operating profit at Nintendo, which is locked in a three-way battle with Sony Corp. (6758.T: Quote, NEWS , Research) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile , Research) in the $30 billion video game industry, totalled 90.63 billion yen ($756 million) in April-June, up from 28.8 billion a year earlier.

Nintendo's strategy to expand the gaming population beyond hard-core gamers to women and the elderly by offering innovative and easy-to-play games has paid off handsomely as its DS handheld player and Wii console have far outsold rival machines monthly.

For the year to March 2008, the Kyoto-based company revised up its operating profit forecast by 37 percent to 370 billion yen, compared with a consensus of a 304.6 billion yen profit in a poll of 20 analysts by Reuters Estimates.

Shares in Nintendo, known for such game characters as Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong, rose 32 percent in April-June, far outstripping a 5 percent gain in the Nikkei average <.N225>.

I have no idea how much that means but i know Nintendo is in a damn good condition right now.

Now, Nintendo, create some 5 new EAD quality teams and put some new IP gems on the line. Also, refrain from giving licenses to 3rd parties to make your games, like starfox assault for example.

If I read that correctly, the GC made more software sales than the wii...

if thats just figures for the last financial period then it paints a much nicer picture for Sony, presuming that the PS2 is making them more money than the GC is making for Nintendo.

Still, Wii is young and catching up to the 360 nice and quickly.

Well, those attach rates figures are much lower for Wii because there hasn't been much time and not many games to 'attach' to the Wii. It's not been out for a year, whilst the GameCube has five years of excellent games behind it.

You're right that Sony isn't doing that bad; the PS2 and PSP are probably making them far more money than the 360 is doing for Microsoft. The PS3 is horrible though.

I wonder how many consoles the 360 is on now. In the beginning of the year it was 9.55 million, a number Nintendo has achieved far more quickly. With the 16.5 million shipping plan (Nintendo will sell many of those), the Wii should overtake the 360 by the end of this year.
