New PC

Recommended Posts

As the title says i'm after a new pc to build. My budget is around £250 for the whole job (Only want the tower).

What i'm after is something which can play the newer games. Or basically anything better than my pc at the minute which is too crap to mention here. The hard drive doesn't have to be huge, 80gb will do me fine.

The only reason i ask here is because i don't know what to do about the mother board and CPU and whats what.

So could anyone help me out? I know theres some handy people around this board :)

last time i wanted to build myself a pc my options were a core duo and a asus mainboard. i'm not really up to date at the moment, but i think core 2 duos are the way to go. everything else above it is too expensive and amd was, but isn't an option anymore. but then again, that's just 2 cents of a student of telematics ;)

Core 2 Duo E6300 or 6400 should do the job quite easily, they're cheap and run fantastic.

Motherboard? Anything with an nForce chipset, even if you're not gunna be running with a great graphics card, the speed of them is unparrelled. Oh and yes, i recommend an Asus motherboard, i've used them for my last 4 systems and never had an ounce of a problem with them.

I would go with a Intel chipset my self, but thats just my opinion.

I agree with the Asus motherboards though.

In all honesty your not gonna get much for £250 gaming wise, i'd try an integrated platform like the AMD 690G, which features an x700 class GPU, and built in HDMI.

Or buy a Mac.

I think 'Buy a Mac' has totally become part of this board.

Anyway, JonSt has a very good point, you have an extremely limited budget and his suggestion is a pretty solid idea.

For a 250 budget i'd say you couldn't really go far wrong.

PC specialist do fantastic deals. Can configure it whatever way you fancy, prices ain't bad. One thing i'd stress is get 1gb of ram, it really makes the difference. I'm sure plenty of people can direct you as to what is good/bad here.

That "get a mac" thing is really irritating and unconstructive :blank:

^ can you afford a slightly faster Core 2 Duo? Maybe the 6400? But for your budget that's not bad, it will certainly make drastic improvements. As for your GPU, I've got a GeForce 7600GT and I'm only just (after about 8 months) starting to find games I can't run at full spec. It'll be the first thing I upgrade.

There is no 'get a pc' "thing", that was just something we say to register our annoyance at 'get a mac'.

You make seem like some sort of jewel or something, it's a phrase. You say it, no different from the mac one.

It is different.

Reasons for saying 'get a mac' on these boards.

Because you love your macs, because you think it's funny to say, because you want to convert PC users over to see the light, because the mac has less problems overall than the PC, because it might solve the problem in question. Because of this 'get a mac' has become a joke, a long running novelty that appears in nearly every thread.

Reason for saying 'get a pc'

to get back at people who say 'get a mac'.

I would just let him keep that CPU, they can overclock to 3ghz easy.

What's the use of those kind of speeds when that memory can't keep up...
