Nintendo Co., the world's third- biggest maker of video game players, has sold more than twice as many Wii game consoles in Japan as rival Sony Corp. has sold of its PlayStation 3, a research report said.

Kyoto-based Nintendo has sold 1.95 million units of its newest game machine as of March 25 since it debuted on Dec. 2 last year, Tokyo-based research firm Enterbrain Inc. said in a faxed statement. Sony has sold 812,000 of its latest console since November 11, the report said.

As the PlayStation 3 loses market share in Japan, it becomes more difficult for Sony to recoup investment in the machine. Sony and rivals Nintendo and Microsoft Corp., which makes the Xbox 360, sell players at or near a loss on expectations of making money on game software.

Pure speculation on my part, but I'd have thought Sony lose money on each PS3 sold while Nintendo make a profit. No idea about Microsoft. They probably buy a company for each console sold.

I'm not really suprised since the PS3 doesn't really offer anything that new, at the moment. If they don't start selling soon I think were are going to see the same pattern as with the PSP and the DS. Microsoft really need to sort their advertising out, thats their problem. They have great games like Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata but their slogan 'Jump in' does not translate well.

Odd, actually. Sony is a japanese company, yet Nintendo gets more praise. My guesses for the terretorial victories: Nintendo in Japan, Microsoft in America and SOny in Europe. Although it will be close calls for Europe as well as America.

I would say that the Wii is more Japanese in its philosophy than the PS3, so it's not really surprising this is happening.
