Oli1983uk Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 Right my dad has asked me to set a Wireless network at his house. The place is pretty old and it has some thick walls. what would people Suggest would be a good set top to do this, I would proberly get a Wireless modem router and plug that in the office and connect that to the pc in there with a network cable and then to boost the signal I would place the access point in the hall along from the office just above the the stairs leading down to the front room. What Products would you suggest would be best for this kida lay out? Pic below of the house I am installing this Wifi.
Chanser Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 Mimo if you want good range, don't touch the draft-N or 802.11n hardware yet. Belkin MIMO routers are your best bet, the range is great as this has 3 antennas to boost signal. http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopSearch.asp?CategoryID=331 ADSL versions http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopSearch.asp?CategoryID=269 Cable versions. Otherwise just get any wireless router with wireless USB adapter or wireless laptop card or wireless PCI card. Netgear or Linksys or Zyxel will do you best. Then add a DIY range booster to any wireless device that has a antenna. http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template2/index.html I own a Speedtouch 585 v6, for it's rock solid firmware and stability. Though the web interface is not user friendly!
Blue_Ninja0 Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 First of all, remember that more important than the distance between the devices, is the number of walls between the devices. A friend of mine (Shino) is having some serious trouble with his wireless network because he has a lot of walls in the way.
Oli1983uk Posted February 1, 2007 Author Posted February 1, 2007 As I say the Walls are pretty thick in this house as its pretty old. the Router/modem would be up in the office and placed out the way, and the other computer would be in the front room. Edit: Thinking about these 2 items: http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=2074 and http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=3607 I think this should cover the area fine for what I need it to do, what are your ideas? Also I would like it so when I go down there I can access the network on a laptop, with these new Wifi systems such as Mimo and G would I need to get different Wireless adapters for the laptop?
Jasper Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 Things important to know: how much iron has bein (is that actually right, 'bein'?) dumped in your walls? If you have loads, you're screwed. it works like a cage for convicts. The signal can't get out if it's in a metal box. So try to find that first - if your house is old, chances are big that they dumped the walls full with everything they could find to make it a solid house. In the fifties, they didn't really think of WiFi signals not passing through walls...
thirtynine. Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 My incental router is in my basement and im in the attic, i live in an old house too and i get a fine signal just buy a wireless router and if the signal isnt good enough gett a booster box.

Then you have a house wich is not dumped with metals. We had a router two rooms away and we couldn't get it's signal in this room. But then again, I'm talking about the same floor. Going up is never really a problem since ceilings (and in the same way, the floor of the next floor (soudns kinda stupid)) are supposed to be light and are not filled with metal. It's in the horizontal direction I'm talking. And about the 'old house'-thing, I'm talking about houses build by architects and constructors during the time of the coalmines. Well, ti's in Belgium anyway.

Buy a good router (chanser's suggestion is quite nice) and a good network card, preferably of the same brand, and if you can't get enough signal, try a repeater.
