Have you installed any games recently? Namely ones with copy protection known as starforce, that stopped my drives from reading a while ago, then explorer would crash after a few attempts.

I decided to get HL2 over Steam today, had a quick run around Facility a bit ago, the remixed music is awesome so far. Can't wait for later releases and the Complex map.
I've been following this for ages too, I'll be sure to get it once I bother to get HL2. For some reason I'm looking forward to this mod more than the Perfect Dark source mod, even though I much prefered Perfect Dark over Goldeneye on the N64.
Don't they always codename hardware components? The Cube's CPU was is known as "Gekko"(So tiny) while the GPU is known as "Flipper", so I never really thought anything of Hollywood and Broadway...
www.gak.co.uk are pretty good.
For a beginner who doesn't want a really cheap and crappy one go for Epiphone or Ibanez. Or if you do, go with Squire. I'd borrow one if you can until you know you want to stick with it, it's a pretty expensive hobby to chuck in.
Of course it's enough, considering ping is a lot more important than pure bandwidth. 512k would probably be more than adequate in most cases. Not many connections would take advantage of 11Mbps.
Check the back of your PC for an ethernet port before buying a network card, most mobo's made in the past few years have at least one built in. If you can't find one, then the card you linked to is fine.
Also, check out BroadbandBuyer before you take the plunge for some router reviews and such.
